Two parents who are putting their children in extreme danger. I am hoping it will turn out okay, before the wilderness passes judgement. Those parents seem like a real pair of....

It probably won't go that long. Both of the parents are now in violation of probation, at least, I'm assuming from reading the article. So they stop the SAR search, and then send out the Sheriff's and police dogs for an extradite. Since there is allegation of abuse, it would probably be the best thing for the kids if the parents were revoked. I don't see them dropping the blue warrant for these two....people.

I don't figure that it will take them very long to find them, and when they do the parents will be taken into custody and a family member or child services will get the two children.

As far as putting their children in extreme danger, he has wilderness skills since he attended a survival camp through his church six years in a row in the search area. He also took more than $1,000 worth of "camping survival type gear". I'm not condoning what they did, don't get me wrong. They just Buged Out!

To North Dakota....where "camping gear" isn't going to fly if it gets real cold real quick. In cold weather things go really bad if you don't have a decent backstock of life necessities, such as food, heat source, and dry locale.
It is easy to think you can make it during a summer "survival" camp when nature is at its most beautiful. It takes some serious skills to make it on your own with nothing extra to support you. It is even harder when you have 3 extra people who are along for the ride.
No, I think what they are doing requires some serious prior experience. I'm hoping that what Alpine_Sapper said will happen. They will be quickly arrested and that will be the end.

From the article, to me, it seemed that they were still under investigation. Just because the Sheriff made those helpful recommendations doesn't mean the report was considered a closed case. Also, they refuse to release details of the mom's probation? hmmmmm...
IMHO, it doesn't appear to be a simple "bug-out", it seems like they are running from the law to avoid the real circumstances of what happened coming out into the open, with the following (probable) jail time. Also, it allows the father, or mother, to continue doing whatever it was that caused the report to be filed in the first place, this time without scrutiny from friends, family, neighbors, and the police. My heart goes out to the two kids.
Eric Rudolph hid out for a long long time. 5 years. Of course he was alone. In Georgia, and a known survivalist. They have been out there 2 weeks. I would imagine they are pretty close to giving up on their own.

grundle, he lived and grew up in Nebraska, I think he knows what a harsh winter is (they even spent their honeymoon in the Black Hills) As far as what gear is needed, they didn't list what he took, just said that he "recently" purchased more than $1,000 worth of "camping survival type gear" (after at least 6 years of doing that he must have had a lot more equipment.)
As I had stated, don't get me wrong! I hope they catch them.
Mac (Pict) does that type of training for his Church only in a different location.
They probably are in North Dakota. But they may be in Washington, D.C., or anyplace else. For all you know, grandpa may have been there when the car was dropped off.
I once had a client leave the courthouse to "get a coffee next door" during a recess in his trial. Next time I heard from him was six months later when he called me asking how much trouble he was in. He said he was in Florida (Caller ID showed up as Florida, too) but he was using a cell phone. Later I found out that he was actually about 15 miles away in Rhode Island when he called me.
Best bet is for the authorities to check the cell phone records - even then, one accomplice and the records will just lead everyone on a wild goose chase.

i had this talk with my mentor today, we are both in agreement that too many folks romantisize this lifestyle any one who ever has attempted it knows how hard it is to live this way, although some have done it, eric rudolf, ted kazinski, scott fischer(think thats his name hes on fbi top 10 list, lived in scottsdale az blew up his home after killing wife and kids and dissapered into the mountains that was april 2001 not caught yet, but could be dead also, point is ,is that it takes an different type of person to live this way.

I was just pointing out that all three of the people you mentioned are either wanted or already incarcerated. Ted Kazynski seems to be the only one that wasn't a total nutter BEFORE heading out to the wilderness, and that's debateable.

The only references I could find to Scott Fischer is the guy in "Into thin Air", the mountain climber dude.
I guess the original point I was making was that living off the land as a fugitive (so, out of necessity) and choosing to go off into the wilds on your own because you want to or are fed up with society are two different things.

Oh, I totally agree with you. It definitely takes an individual with different wiring to sit in a nice $300,000 home with a 42" plasma, jacuzzi, etc. To put out the spliff and put down the snifter and say "ya know, freezing my toes off all night and roasting them all day sounds like FUN. While I'm at it, let's throw in torrential downpours, chigger infestations, fleas, ticks, mosquitos, hunger, thorns, no running water, having to carry everything I own and sleep on rocks...Damn, that sounds SO much better than this posh lifestyle." When I think of the people that forego modern society I think more along the lines of Bradford Angiers. He did it because he wanted to.
And Tennecedar; Good point, imbalanced is probably a better word than desperate. Everyone is desperate at some point in their lives.
I don't know. A lot of folks don't need a posh lifestyle but don't want to live the kind of life you described either. There are a lot of folks on here that left society for one reason or another and live a perfectly happy life.
But, to your point, I don't think you can do that without some type of cave (log cabin, bunker, whatever) and your choice of paints (books, internet, etc.). Just trying to live off the land with no place to call home would be the pits. But I think I could do it with just a knife.

It is extremely hard to try living primitively with small children. And just because the guy took 6 church survival courses & bought 1K worth of "survival type camping gear" does not a survivalist make! Those types of courses are meant for the "weekend warrior"; like a day-hiker, hunter, etc. Taking your family out into the wilds like that is completely asinine!
I hope for the children's sake they catch them (mom & dad) before those kids have to suffer.

I tried the so-called "posh" lifestyle at one point. Had all the toys; 4-wheelers, snowmobiles, jet skis, boat, lifted 4x4 Bronco (loaded with all the toys), lifted 4x4 F-350 van (completely self-contained for camping/survival), 2,500 s.f. house (I built) with every conceivable "modern" amenity. And I made (by yuppie standards) really good $$$.
But, I have to tell you, having all of that DID NOT make me any happier or more comfortable. It was actually more work and a LOT more (useless) expense:
1.) Initial cost to buy the TOYS.
2.) Constant maintenance on all those "toys".
3.) All of the added expense to insure.
4.) Added fuel expense to transport said toys.
5.) A LOT OF UN-NECESSARY HEADACHE!!!
Living in the deep back-country "off-the-grid" is work, but it is physically and mentally satisfying work, and you're not crowded into a "feed-lot" subdivision with everybody all-around you knowing your business.
So I sold it all and haven't looked back nor do I miss any of it. . .not for one minute!

To your first statement you are exactly right!
But, on your second point; I have lived all-around the country "off-the-land" with "no place to call home", and I had no need for a "home base". You know "Papa was a rollin' stone, where ever he laid his hat was his home" and it was all I needed. No regrets, no need for more, wanted for nothing.
The best part of this type of lifestyle is being able to see the country, experience different cultures, learn about the history of the land, and foremost and best of all, see the beauty of this country and others that I have traveled to. Which gave me the opportunity to decide where I finally wanted to "call home"!?

How do you group making it in the woods and blowing up his house or killing his wife and kids.
One is a choice of lifestyle the others are felonies.
I took from the news article that the family in the original thread, were running because of past experiences with the judicial system.
That is not the same choice that members I've encountered here chose.
As for the second part of your question, no. I believe that greed, hate, jealousy, money, a chemical imbalance, or just simply being evil can cause a man to kill his family and blow up his house.
