Hey, I have 2 small boys and was wondering if anyone with kids out there had suggestions on where to start them on survival.
By the way the oldest is 8.

Take them out to the woods, drop them off and drive away. When you come back they will be extremely interested in learning.
That is a bad bad bad joke, I will probably go to hell for it. I would start my children off in the local boy scout troop. I can't think of a better way between that and taking them out on your own for supplemental practice.

If you haven't already, I'd start them with survival information within the house and work outward. Teach them to survive a house fire. Human kids are like animal kids. Their instinct is to hide when there is trouble and human kids will hide, typically in a closet or under the bed, in a fire emergency. Start there for sure.
You can do a lot of stuff in your backyard. There are many suggestions on the site but I'd start with the basics. Teach them the Rule of 3s and practice on the basics. Give them a whistle BEFORE you go to the woods and teach them how to use it. Then teach them to hug a tree and blow the whistle in 3s.
If kids get lost in the woods they will invariably scoot in the wrong direction. I know, I've lost a kid before and it's not much fun trying to track them down. It was a lesson I learned the hard way and it could have had terrible consequences. So teach them how to use a whistle and how to stay put. HUG A TREE.
The rest will come with time but teaching and practicing the basics will serve them well all their lives.

Make sure you take it away before they get in the car, and give it back when you get where you are going. It only takes one loud blast usually followed by "I'm sorry, I forgot" as the blood pours out of your ears.
And it doesn't take much teaching for them to figure out a whistle. :innocent:

Well, I'm not saying any of this to take away from Rick's advice because it's good common sense advice. However, I read your intro and learned nothing about you, basically. So, my question is, what do you know about survival? Teach them that.
Are you referring specifically to wilderness survival? Do you have a good outdoors area to take them to and teach them? People often, in my estimation overlook teaching opportunities. A family picnic for instance is a great chance to teach kids the basics of how to use a knife, build a fire (w/fire safety), track animals, cook outdoors. I'm not saying this to brag but I'd learned the basics of all those things by the time I was your oldest's age and I didn't have a dad to teach it to me. I'm saying it because I believe people often under-estimate a child's capacity to gain and hold knowledge. I'm glad you asked the question, because in my opinion...this is your chance, man.
If you're talking about other survival issues, kids can also pick up the basics of first aid if you show them and like Rick said, teach them what to do if lost, stay in one place and repeat three blasts on a whistle. Teach them the importance of hydration, drinking plenty of water when out. There's so much, I'm bouncing all over the place here. I guess you're getting the idea. Good luck and have fun.

Just try to make it as fun as possible. Short hikes, maybe looking for something (make it a treasure hunt). State parks sometimes have activities like that, plus if they get bored there's generally other things going on.

First take them campimg, very supervised. Give them chores around the camp and explain why these chores are important.
Teach them "Find a Space and Show Your Face"
This was the system we taught to grammer and middle schoo; kids in Maine. Many kids will naturally find a small cubby and hold up in it which is great for surviving the cold or wet but in order to be found, by finding an open space and looking up, the sun reflecting off their face will greatly aid the searchers.

My boys are 10 and 11 now. I think they have enough knowledge now that they would be okay for a short time.
I just try to show them stuff as we are camping, we built a shelter in the back yard this summer. I want them to read Survive by Les Stroud.
We are going to focus this summer on always being prepared, carry at the very least a blade and something to start a fire with.

I'd start with basic safety instructions
Fire Safety
Knife Safety
Gun Safety
Etc.
And I agree with what the other guys said.
At the age of 12 years was when I went on a ??( walk about ) with Dad we lived off the land . Mom said , before I went out .....:innocent:.....that I was a very picky eater , but when I came back , I would eat anything that would not eat me first lol LOL ...:bat: ...Food was any thing and all things.... FOOD was FOOD and anything was food ..... I was the Bear

Don't call it "wilderness survival", you will scare them. Make it fun and call it "living like an indian". That's what the Tiger Cubs did (year before cub scouts) when they went to visit a local indian tribe. The pack leaders really focused on how the indians use the land and respect it, they just don't use it up. And the Tiger scout pack leaders said don't be scared of indians just because they look different, get to know them first. (The indians dressed up in full buckskins, everything hand made, wood beads and all.) The indians even wore knives, IIRC, and taught that a knife is a tool. It should be respected but not feared. Most soccer moms would cringe at the thought.
Then the scouts were taught, and played, traditional indian games. To wear the kids out, ya know. :)
This group of indians has been working with the scouts for many years and the kids really thought it was neat.
You must understand that the brain of an 8 year old has a lot of trouble understanding the concept of "being prepared". Sure, you can let them forget their gloves on a few cold winter days, and they might get it. Or let them be responsible for their snacks on a long car trip, and allow them to forget them. They might get it. But most parents would not subject their kids to these difficult but necessary teaching opportunities.
For 5 to 8 year olds keep lessons short, about 5 minutes. That's all they can handle.

This will introduce your kids to common animals in your backyard. They can even feed ants to a funnel spider and watch the spider run out to grab the ant! (Boys usually love this.) The spiders are more active at dusk, so for best results, feed the spider when the sun starts to go down. During the day the spider will ignore the ant because the spider is sleeping.
What my dad did't he just took me with him for "forest trips". Usually we just walked in the woods, (he owns some forest in htri) he would inspect the property as we went on, and tell me about uses of different plants, how to recognise them, what time of year they could be used to some certain purpose, when we crossed animal tracks he would ask me what animal it was and so on. He tought me how to find drinkable water easily, how to make fire, how to use knife and axe. Later he tought me how to track, shoot and skin and gut game.
Just take the kids with you. Go in woods, make a camp fire, grill some sausages, tell them stuff and go back home.
Ps. Just called my dad and asked how young I was when he first took me in the woods. He said I was two or three years old.

My oldest son is four years old and I've already had him on a couple of day hikes. The longest one being about three miles (climbing 300 ft over a variety of switchbacks) before I let him ride my shoulders down. I live in the Ozarks and since I spend a lot of time out in the green, I expect to have my boys out there with me. I figure that to "start them on survival" you mean wilderness survival (as opposed to SHTF survival) . . . but, really, maybe my answer is the same. At four he can already point out deer, raccoon, boot, bike, horse, and dog tracks. He can distinguish between chert, quartz, and limestone. He can sit still in a canoe. Knows how to leave as little trace as possible, packing out more than he packs in.
I started him just by getting him out there with me and feeding his sense of wonder and amazement at being outdoors. My youngest son is only 4 months old, but I'll have him out there with me as soon as he can walk and reliably follow simple commands (stop, slow down, don't jump off the bluffs, don't eat that, etc.)
It's amazing how much they learn through example. If dad does it, it must be right.

Seriously . . . no matter what it is. Knowing that my boys will define themselves by my example (good or bad) has, I believe, made me a better man because I want them to become better men. A solid love for the wild places is part of that, and so is the confidence and ability to care for yourself and others in a variety of environments - which is how I interpret teaching them to survive.
When that bad word slips or you throw a bit of a fit and look around at a small pair of eyes looking at you it makes you think twice about doing it a second time.
I was very very lucky. My father had me in the woods around 4 or 5. Just out walking and he would point things out to me. A track or a frog of different "rules" like moss on the north side of a tree. I carried on that tradition with my boys and now my youngest one is doing it with his. It's kind of cool to think my dad walks those woods in my grandson. The knowledge he shared with me handed down through my son to my grandson.

Sign them up for the boy scouts...maybe get involved in their troop as a leader yourself...kind of get to relive your childhood with them. The day hikes are a great idea as well. Good luck!

I'm with those that say "make it fun". As a teacher, I know that kids will learn anything if they think it is a game. I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of "The Dangerous Book for Boys" by Hal Iggulden. Boy scouts is also a good idea. You might also see what age they start hunter safety training programs in your state.
Building a treehouse with dad is our major project for this summer. Every day of the summer, I take my kids out camping, fishing, berry picking, hiking, etc. Each day is an adventure and each day they learn a new survival skill in a fun way.

I would start them out on projects that they would enjoy,like my fish hooks; for instance.... they look like birds fish and other animals. thats always a big hit with most kids, wood burning projects like making tongs is also a good one;and making bracket stoves.intricate to carve the pores out, they lend a good skill for kids.i have a video on you tube called "Making primative fish hooks with trapper jack" click onto the link below in my signature to see some amazing hooks. I have three daughters two of them are grown , so i had time to work with them. the suprises of nature interested them the most (and the fried dandylion flower),

you should start them off on the basics like hoe to use a compase and witch way to go if they git lost. i have been studying survivall now for about a year and you should teach them many of the basics maybe get them some easy to understand books on survival skills let them watch sorvivorman or man vs wild.
