Iv been looking for some natural clay for some time to try making hand made pottery. Well I found some the other day, So Im going to give it a try. I made a small oil lamp and fired it today and it held togeather fine, so Im going to try something a little bigger. Will take some pics of the project and see what happens. Does any one here do this kind of thing, I think it is a good skill to have under your belt.

I've done a bit of clay work. I got some of the best natural clay from down on the North Carolina/South Carolina boarder when I was doing some backpacking. The clay was so pure and a beautiful color of red.

The clay here is gray, and when fired is a mixture of blacks and grays, the sane as the peaces of pottery I find in the springs, and this stuff is super sticky, almost like peanut butter. I filled up a 30 gal. trash can with this clay so I have enough to last a while. I cant wait to see how this turns out.

The clay up here in northeast Ohio is more a gray color. We have a lot of soft gray shale, I would guess that's why the clay is gray.

If the clay is really soft and sticky it may need to be worked a bit to remove some of the water. Otherwise it will crack when fired. If your first test went well, your more than likely on the right track.

RWB,

Have you thought about doing a wood firing?

I'm saving my hard wood saw scrap to do a firing. It'll be dark but, that's cool.

Yes, Im doing this as natural as posable, I like the natural colors that the wood fireing gives the clay.

I haven't tried that way but it looks good. For the one I made, I just put it next to the fire and slowly moved it inward and rotated it a little and it seemed to work fine.

Thanks. I think I'll try the pit firing method. Maybe by next year I'll build a real kiln like Rebel linked to. The black color reminds me of pieces of pottery i've found digging around under bluffs.

OK, I finely got some pics, This harder than I thought, but is very doable. The large one did not make it through the firing, but had pretty good luck with smaller containers and beads. has any one else tried to do this?

You've got some nice work going there.
We used to do Raku firings in school out in the parking lot. The kiln body was placed on top of a fire brick base with a gas torch heating it. The body was some kind of fire brick itself with an expanded steal skin to keep it from exploding. We'd fire the pieces, lift the kiln, pull out the pieces with long tongs and throw them into trash cans full of wood shavings, then finish cool them in water. Probably lucky we weren't kill by the shrapnel when a piece went blooey but it was usually in the trash can when that happened. Be real careful about trapped air when working your clay pieces.

We had some nice glazes that went metallic in the smoke cure. Wish I could find the notebook with the notes. Moving sucks.

Here is the type of kiln we used

Ok, this is a project I've been toying with for quite some time, and I finally dug some clay the other day. I did get a chance to talk to my old ceramics teacher from 13 years ago, and she still remembered me. She recommended a book or two on pottery, that touches on primitive ways, but I'm looking for some more definitive sources. Are there any really good books on primitive pottery? I have a LOT of questions.

I don't think my clay is fine enough.. a bit too course. When you pinch it, it cracks everywhere. Nothing like I remember from high school (but that was a long time ago and I probably don't remember much lol.) Can I use this clay anyway or should I find a better source with more plastic clay. I know where some is, but it's on private property and I don't want to take a chance, BUT I kinda want to take a chance because this clay source I'm talking about is VERY near to my BOL.
My old teacher offered to give me her scrap clay (stuff that dried out and needs to be rewetted) for FREE if I ever get a chance to go back over there. That town is 30 miles away, and when you work for a living, it's hard to get over there during school hours, lol. So, I'll be using some of that (eventually) for some small pieces and for test firing in a pit out back of the house. I really want to get the basics down before SHTF. and I really, really want to learn to do it with natural source clay in a primitive setting.

A tip she gave me for all you potters already firing wares: 55gal metal drum 1/2 full of sawdust (like from a cabinet shop dust collector), insert ware, cover with more sawdust, add more ware, etc., light it on fire and walk away. Come back and check it in a day or two when everything has cooled and see if anything is left. She said this was the way they did it before they had a kiln at her school (that was aeons ago lol) and she claims to have had a lot of success this way.
I really need some books on this subject if anyone has anything to offer, TIA!

The one that looks like a frog, is a frog oil lamp. The wick goes in the mouth. As for the clay I dug it myself. Mix in a vessel good< let settle for a few mins.and pour off, repeat 3 times, then pour in a large pan and let dry to the thickness you like and get it on.

Okay, just an update, no pics yet (i've been taking them, but I'm just not ready to post) but the water method is very effective at quickly cleaning out heavy particles and rocks. I've made a wad of orange clay from the slough, and have a ball of white clay (from my BOL!) drying from the creek. The orange clay is cracking as it dries. (I made a little drinking bowl) I believe this is a good sign I need to add temper.
Can I use bricks and crush them into powder?
I took a clump from the bucket the other night while I had a fire going in the chop shop. dried it on top of the stove for a while, moved it closer and closer to the fire, till it was inside the heart of the coal-bed. Piled coals on it and added logs on top of that. I checked it the next day after all the coals were burnt up. It felt lighter and much more grainy... The real test: I poured a glass of water on it, it didn't melt or turn muddy or slick. It absorbed the water just like bricks do. I presume this is an indication that I have decent quality clay since it didn't explode.

What kind and how much temper do I add? I've read about everything from firebrick to old pottery, to cattail fluff. I've read about 1/10 temper to clay, and I've read about 50/50 mixes.. is there any way to know what would be best for my clay without a whole lot of trial and error?

Thanks in Advance!!

YOU can use the crushed brick or sand, 1 part sand to 5 parts clay. If it did not fall apart when you wet it your on the right track. If you burnish the inside of your bowl before firing it wont soak up to water as fast. You can also coat the inside of the bowl with beeswax to water proof, Hope this helps, Sounds like your on the right track.

I'm a little disappointed that my bowl cracked, but at least I got plastic clay.. now to adjust for shrinkage.

Thanks for your help RWB. This is a really fun (and REALLY dirty) project! I'm sure for you it's second nature and you can tell by "feel" what to do. As with most primitive skills you have to get a feel for things.

YCC, thought you would like this link if you don't already have it. Its about making chord marked pottery and a step by step for the collection to firing of the clay.

http://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/villagers/cordmarked/index.html

The Practical Primitive link you posted in #22 has info on tempering and making small test bowls in different ratios to find the best fired result. You probably already read it.

gryffynklm
02-23-2010, 11:38 AM
Ycc, IF you use warm water instead of cold you may have less shrinkage.

OR since shrinkage is in part from the loss of moisture, perhaps the clay is too wet when you set it to drying. Can you work with a stiffer/dryer clay?

I learned by trail and error,And a few things I found out. Dout make your project to thick, Around 1/4 thick, dry slowly, When you fire you pots start out with a small fire around your pots to drive out the last bit of water then build up the fire to finish the firering.

oh yeah.. today my bowl was in several pieces.. it dried itself into destruction.. rewet the clay, and molded it out again.. will see how it does once more, then I'm going to crush some bricks or fire some of this clay to crush and use as temper.
I'll start with the suggested 1/5 and make a couple plates increasing to see what holds up to drying best then firing.
thanks again gang!

It's been many, many years since I worked with clay. Could it be drying too fast? Maybe wrapped in a slightly damp towel to slow the process?

I'll give that a try on one of the pieces my son made, but I'm really leaning toward too much shrinkage. I did a really REALLY good job cleaning it out. I think this slaked clay is just too thin to hold together without something to reduce shrinking.
I'm really eager to try the clay from my BOL. Got a nice ball drying in the chop shop now, probably 2 lbs, and I got it from the same exact place I got the stuff 13 years ago that I made into a bowl at school (Man, that seems like forever ago!)
I did it a little differently, reducing the number of pourings needed.. I'll post on it all when I get to the point of no return... pieces that hold together in drying lol. got about 1000 pics lol.. you know me, I like pictures!
And I really have to thank you again Mr. Crashblade, for this most excellent camera. THANK YOU!!

that was some good info on that texas link gryff, thanks.

Okay, I think, now, that it was a combination of both factors +1. The clay was too wet when I set it to dry, that is, when I made the bowl out of it, it was still tacky. Then I let it dry too quickly, but the worst part, was it stuck to the mold hahaha!
So I took it out and reworked it as mentioned before, adding only a little moisture, and it became like play-doh. it still cracked at the edges when molding, but this time, I lined my bowl with an old thin rag so it wouldn't stick.
since it wasn't stuck to the bowl, when it dried and shrunk away from the mold you could lift it out by the rag, and set it in the open to air dry slowly. I covered the rim with the damp towel, as per suggested by crash, and in a few days I had a leather-dry drinking bowl.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg184/your_comforting_company/Primitive%20Skills/pottery/DSCN2643.jpg

the dish was treated in the same manner. I have not yet added any temper to the clay. We shall see how they hold up in the fire.

I also made a bowl out of the BOL clay today, had some in process for a few days now. It had a better feel and was much more plastic. It felt like the clay I remembered from school.

I took a lot of pics of what I've been doing, with the refining of these 2 different clays. If anyone would like to peruse all the pictures, they are located here (http://s248.photobucket.com/albums/gg184/your_comforting_company/Primitive%20Skills/pottery/)

I'll be glad to answer any questions I can about this, but be warned, I don't know what I'm doing!! hahaha!
Thanks for the tips guys.. this might turn out yet!

WELLLLL,

the firing went pretty well. my drinking bowl blew to smithereens but the waiter dish fired perfectly. I got some real nice colors, light through dark orange and some black spots.
I'm just tickled pink!

It was much too windy to fire them in an open firing, so I built a small fire in the chop shop, let it die to coals, all while getting the pieces nice and 3rd-degree-burn hot. stuck the pieces in the hot coals, covered them with a layer of hot coals, covered that with dry wood from pallets, and stuck a small green log on top, just to keep the heat directed down. I sat there and watched as the bowl exploded and my heart broke a little, too, but when I took out the dish it more than made up for the bowl.

Success!.. well half success anyway :D

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg184/your_comforting_company/Primitive%20Skills/pottery/DSCN2673.jpg

you might notice the thing that looks like an ice-cream cone. That's my youngest son's "cup" It was of inconsistent thickness, but fired perfectly. I guess that changes success / failure to 66 / 33%. at least now I have some fired clay to use as temper if needed. This looks to be viable clay if treated with care (no neanderthals!!)

YAY!

so, who wants a write up on the super easy process of making your own containers in a wilderness situation? I'd like to employ RWB in the posting if I may. As this is my first attempt, I'd like input from someone with a lot more experience.

The creek pot is still pretty wet. Thats the one I'm really excited about!

I haven't dug into the ashes to really get at the shards, but I'm gonna try knapping the bowl itself (gonna break it anyway for temper) when I get over this pulled muscle thing I got from knapping for 8 days straight lol. got myself a nice knot between my shoulders and one in my chest OW!

hmj, I adjusted my drying method rather than adding temper. This was really just a test of the clay itself before I start adjusting variables.. change too many at once and you don't know what you did that made a difference. I needed to know I had firable stuff first. Also, this will give me grog that is the same color my fired pieces will be, so colors will match.
