View Full Version : Bugging out to another country?????
We have had many discussions on bug out kits , bags etc. most seem to cater to the idea of leaving civilization behind and heading for the tall timber.
But what would you do if you had to get out of the country?....if you cant just catch a plane....in other words if you had to enter another country clandestinely and keep a low profile. If you had to live in the wilderness of another country? What would you take along?

I would take my main BOB, because it has all of my basic survival gear in it like fire making material, first aid kit, water collection, shelter material, etc. I would definately be up the creek without it. I would have to rely on wild game and edible plants for food.
My BOB is equipped to provide the basics for a long time, so if I had to, I could lay low for a good bit.

Jay - you pose an interesting question. Having to live in a clandestine manner (like the college kid that wants to be a squatter) will assuredly add to the stress of the situation that you find yourself. What would I bring - probably as much as I could. Based on your previous posts, if it was Sri Lanka - elephant repellent.
I do bug out to another country for four years at a time. I live in a house. Mac
My downside to this concept is the only other country nearby. In a TEOTWAWKI situation I'd be running into hordes of escapees heading north while I was trying to stealthily find my way south! I guess Alaska here we all come, put a door and that dang sh**ter hope!

I've got places in Mexico, Ecuador, Manitoba and the Yukon mapped out. If the USA becomes unbearable I have options.
So, what is it about the USA that you are most tied to- the land, the people, or the ideals....
For me, its the ideals. I still believe in the constitution and the beliefs that this country were founded on. However, those things are being compromised in a battle that is being fought without guns, in a war that the common person can't really engage in. If those things disappear- there are nice people and big mountains other places.

IMHO if you go to Mexico bring a bullet proof vest :m107:
If I had to leave the US because of anything other than a natural catastrophe I'm sure the other places would be much worse. If I had to move to Sri Lanka, I'd take you.
Japanese WWII soldiers did just that for decades after the war ended on the islands where they were stationed.
Rebels around the world live that way today.

If this is supposed to be a scenario, there's a lot of information lacking. Why am I leaving? Advancing glaciers and climate change? The eruption of a super volcano? Foreign invasion? Political/social/economic turmoil? Are borders legal to cross or does it need to be done clandestine?
It wouldn't be my first choice, but I have a friend in Monterey, Mexico who would be there if TSHTF. True, they just arrested a captain of the cartel there, but if Yellowstone erupts or something equally bad happens, anywhere will be better than here. He'd at least be a resource for resupply and a local guide to get me established or help me find a way further south.
My first choice would be to fly, my second choice would be to drive, my third choice would be to travel by bike. I don't see covering 1,000+ miles on foot as a very viable option if things are bad enough here to make me want to go south.
My bugout kit would certainly vary by why I'm fleeing and what I'm fleeing from. I'd certainly be more inclined to grab my precious metals so I don't arrive poor than I would if I were fleeing a wildfire and going to a shelter. I'm less likely to bring a large assortment of firearms if I'm trying to legally cross the border. If I'm trying to blend in and avoid detection, then I'll be on my bike without the trailer and just paniards and a pack. If I'm trying to arrive as well equipped as possible and nobody cares about a guy on a bike with a trailer full of crap, then I'm grabbing my trailer.

So you would cut and run rather than defend your country???
Not a chance Shipmate.
Just to put things in perspective, we don't have soldiers taking over our homes. It took the 3rd Amendment to outlaw it. We no longer have to worry about one man owning another courtesy of the 13th. Woman can actually vote! We have the freedom to travel anywhere we want, work anywhere we want at any job we want or not. We can worship in any manner we choose or not.
The citizens have always seen a threat to our freedoms. Some imagined, some real and some far more apparent and horrible than anything we face today. We no long have debtors prisons or county poor houses or the right to burn someone at the stake. Even the Supreme Court recently reaffirmed our rights under the 2nd Amendment.
In many many ways I have more freedoms than have previously existed in this country. At least when I go to bed tonight I won't have to worry about a British squad kicking down my door and using my home to billet in.
So you would cut and run rather than defend your country??? WE ARE DOOMED!!!!!
Well since the thread is about bugging out to another country, my guess is that that was what he was responding to. Just a guess, though.

I already did this and moved to Thailand. I have 2 homes here. One is in a populated area, Chiang Mai, but the other one is in the jungle. There I have a small farm which local people tend to when I am not there. I have fruit trees and chickens on the land where my house is and I also grow vegetables on some other land nearby. The house has generator and also a satellite dish. If I moved there permanently year round, I would get some pigs also. They eat ground up banana trees which I have plenty of and I could use pig manure for fertilizer. There is a stream near the village with plenty of fish. If you are 50 years old or older, have a steady income over a certain amount, which I get from my pension, or if you have 800,00 baht, which is at present about 25 thousand US dollars,in a Thai bank, it is easy to get a 1 year renewable retirement visa. Also, if things got bad here for some reason or if there were some further economic disaster, it is not difficult to go to Cambodia or Laos, where living is even cheaper than it is here.

If it was a real war, with real battles and a real enemy I'd surely fight (example WWII). I try to defend the constitution and the values that I believe represent the USA regularly- by taking part in the election process and informing elected officials of things that matter to me.
But, if the tide keeps changing in this country, and certain freedoms are encroached on to a point, that I find this place no longer free. Well, then I'd head some where else.
Ultimatly my allegiances are first to my family, then my friends, before my country.
In general,to me, survival for myself and loved ones trumps blind-Patriotism
Based on your previous posts, if it was Sri Lanka - elephant repellent.
If you find one that works ...please, please, pretty please share it with me. I recently had to run over a mile in horrible terrain on a hot afternoon.....and I'm not built for extended runs! Besides it was a time of day that no self respecting elephant should be out and about! ( they've changed their behaviour patterns.....its a conspriracy against poor hardworking field researchers!)
[QUOTE=Rick;108830] If I had to move to Sri Lanka, I'd take you.
Thankee kindly sir! BTW I like your new pic......But you look a little unsteady on your feet. one beer too many???
Getting back to the original question.....What would you do to prepare for such a overseas bug out??? Supplies, clothers, Language?, Local customs etc? What will you do to blend in?
Blending in is a very good point. There are a lot of places in the world I might just as well hold a blinking lamp with a sign that says American. Blending into some cultures would be next to impossible because of size or shading. Anything that makes you conspicuous makes you vulnerable.

When I moved to Thailand I only took 3 pairs of socks and underwear, a coupme of tee shirts and a paperback book. Things are so cheap here I just bought everything I needed once I got here. I really don't see why one would have to live "clandestinely", unless one was a fugitive from the law. And as far as blending in, I cannot blend in with Thai people but there is no reason to. And living off the land is not that difficult as it is tropical and there is plenty of building material and food available and native people are very friendly and willing to help you. The one difficulty about moving here though is employment. Most jobs are restricted from foreigners so unless has adequate savings or a steady income from a retirement pension, as is my situation, it is not easy to live here indefinitely unless you do actually live off the land.

My friends and I have begun to think on and about various SHTF scenarios...
For the most part we will group together at a designated house and consolidate all of our supplies. At that point we will assess the situation and decide on the best course of action. If things aren't "that" bad we will dig in and conserve supplies and wait things out to see if they improve or to get to a point to re-assess and re-plan.
If the location we've picked isn't safe or practical then we have a bug out plan and a location in the mtns to go to with a few backups.
We have discussed plans to leave the country if things warrant that as well but with our level of knowledge going somewhere like AK probably isn't the best idea. We know going south to Mexico would have its own problems so we are brainstorming that now.
We would prefer to stay and fight for our country but if the odds or situation is overwhelming I wont die stupidly when I can bug out and fight another day.
I think the tricky thing will be timing. If the country is at war (civil or otherwise) I would think the borders would be locked down and travel outside the country would be hard to do. Perhaps trading all your goods to a ship captain to stow away or something...
So in my mind either you time it perfectly (hard to do) or you leave early or too late. We've all got passports but those may be useless if SHTF does occur.

In my mind the only major barrier keeping someone from bugging out to a foreign country would be language and culture. Since I believe that culture is carried within a language you can breach that barrier with some effort.
I am not saying it is impossible to bug out if you don't speak the native language, where you are going, but I do know that the transition would be seamless and you are much less likely to be taken advantage of at the outset.
I am fluent in Spanish, English, and passable in Portuguese. If I had to bugout, the entire American continents would be comfortable for me, as well as selected European locations and of course Australia. Leaning on personal experience I would probably make way for Colombia or Peru keeping Brazil and Argentina as secondary choices.
I am working on learning Mandarin so that I can add another large portion of the world to my options.

What makes you think they can keep me out? Everyone seems to be assuming that in bugging out you are going to be concerned with customs and legitimate border proceedings. If it's a real TEOTWAWKI scenario, not just a temporary TSHTF, who cares? And if it's just a TSHTF scenario, why bug out to another country? If you want to move and be an ex-pat, cool, but that's something TOTALLY different.

Note to self: Alpine_Sapper may have tweaked onto my plans to invade the US of A. I'll have to keep a close eye on that one
For me there would be three options, going to Russia(NO!), Sweden(I'm not rasist, but I don't generally like them, or more spesificly their culture...), and Norway(Darn long way). Best option would be hiding in the woods in my own country.
Bugging out to Sweden or Russia is sort of like walking across the street isn't it? That would be like me buggin out to Canada. I'd only do that if they re-instated the draft.

Well you do have great forests, i would bug out your way, Norway or Finland
Only down side is the harsh winter. To live from the land, that can be done with relative ease, but to survive winter you need four basic elements:
1. Skiis, or other way to move effectivly in deep snow, skiis is the most energy efficent.
2. Warm place to sleep/rest. Tent with a stove could do the trick, but building a little log house in dence bushes and having earth roof that grows grasses and such on it would be harder to find AND warmer + bear and wolf safe.
3. Enough fuel, meaning wood. You need a lot of if which means you'll need to be able to fell trees with out compromising your position.
4. Food and means to get more of it.
For me most likele scenario would be all out war with Russia, in which case I would be called back in service and far too busy shooting russians to think of any bug out plans...

Do you have any spanish speaking skillls? If things went that bad I believe I would try to make my way to brazil or one of the carribean islands. I don't speak any portugese but It is such a diverse country with a lot of ethnic and racial groups- another melting pot easier to get lost in than Mexico. The carribean islands as most of the people speak English or some dialect of it the only impediment would be getting there across the water.

In most cases you will have warning about what was hitting the fan ie war, build ups troop movements, ever present media. This is the type that scares me cause then a bunch of idiots will buy books and become "self-sufficent" (Ya right) run to the woods and build shelters sapping the local wildlife. A terrorist attack or major natural disaster you got at most a few days to a few seconds (whats that in the rear view mirror). This type causes the most panic and most casulties because no one is ready (Save the smart few) to survive long periods with out internet, electricty, food, ect.
I have always believed it wasn't reasonable that anyone would attack the U.S. No country would be that dumb given the ability we have to defend ourselves and to inflict counter-attack. However, given the state of affairs in Mexico, I'm beginning to believe more and more that the drug cartels could be capable of border skirmishes. Their equipment is getting pretty sophisticated and pretty scary.

An attack on US soil I agree, but the effects of a far off war still may contaminate the US as radio active fallout, biological or chemical agents. Plus the effects it has on our interests ouside the US
I guess it depends on where you are in the U.S. but any of those scenarios would have to be a massive conflagration to seriously impact the U.S. given our location and the prevailing winds. I grew up in the 50's and 60's when atomic bomb tests were crackin' every other week-end (seems like). In the desert west, in the Pacific, in the USSR. The impact was pretty negligible here in the U.S. I know the kilotons have increased dramatically but think about the total kilotons tested. It was massive.
As for biological or chemical, the prevailing winds "should" disperse any agents to a large extent making anything that reaches us (theoretically) manageable. That probably comes as no consolation to those on the west coast, Hawaii or Alaska where the effects would be most harshly felt.
Obviously, open to debate.

I disagree. I know the US Military and the CIA have Al Queda pretty much hog tied when it comes to attacks in the US (not that it CAN'T happen...) you'd have no time to react if a sleeper cell or a new cell managed to set off a NBC weapon in the united states. I could care less about nuclear, honestly. If the initial blast doesn't get you the contamination and not being able to find decent food and water would probably eventually get you. The biological and chemical are the major worries.
Have you ever seen the effects of a blister agent attack? Mustard Gas is the least of your worries when it comes to those, and the biological attacks are even scarier. And if you think it can't happen on US soil...
If that thing goes off airborne in a city or building you are in you are SCREWED unless you can get to your protective mask NOW. It's not even like carrying an atropine injector would help you. Those things are only designed to push the toxin (and all your blood) out through the pores of your skin, but to give you enough of an endorphin/adrenaline rush to keep fighting for another 10 minutes or so so you can accomplish the mission. All the while the blister agent is melting your eyeballs out of your head.
I mean, sure, if they are sending an armada or a ****load of troops via plane, bus, or boat, yeah, we are gonna know about it, and the military is going to intervene, etc.

If things got real bad I am near the Golden Triangle which is the border of Thailand, Laos and Burma. Then there is always Cambodia. However I work here so I guess moving here isn't really bugging out, just moving.
What you said is all true, AS. However, I doubt anyone is going to bug out to another country because of a localized event. You could, I suppose but no one did when the Towers went down. At least none that I know of. I think you are talking about a very major, large scale event to cause people to actually want to leave the country. On that regard, I don't think it's a real threat. But as I said, it's certainly open to debate.

There must have been a wire crossed somewhere. I wasn't actually talking about bugging out to another country, but pointing out that there are things other than a natural disaster that can happen instantaneously where you don't have time to prepare. Most of the chemical/biological attacks are only going to be a temporary thing until the NBC units can come in and scrub the area and neutralize the agent. Then there should be no issues returning to your home, if you so choose. A lot of times people that make it through things like that choose not to, like the Katrina victims. And I was thinking from as small a scale as gas through the ventilation system of a public building to someone setting off a blast that was the catalyst for an airborned NBC attack, but even that is only going to be city wide at best, unless they contaminate the water or co-ordinate efforts across many major cities.
My apologies for allowing myself to drift so far off topic...

Exactly. It doesn't take a nuclear plant melt down or terrorist attack for people to bug out. A major drought or bursted dam can have people searching for greener pastures. I know a couple of families that moved to Mexico when their factory moved down there. They felt they had no choice. 15+ years with the same job right out of school with no other training in another field. Stay in the States= start over during an era of massive unemployment. Bug out to Mexico= setting up assembly lines and training others in a field they had experience in.
The (un)intresting guestion here is, that is it bugging out if you just migrate through legal chanels...

Main Entry: bug out
Function: intransitive verb
Etymology: origin unknown
Date: 1950
1: to retreat during a military action ; especially : to flee in panic
2: to depart especially in a hurry
IMO if I have to leave where I am because it's no longer safe, capable of supporting my family, any other reason- I'm "bugging out". No matter where I end up. Whether it's hill top in Colorado or a hill top in Peru.

While they may be our enemies, underestimating their capacity for planning/action was what allowed 9/11 to happen. I don't think anyone is stupid enough to do a frontal assault on the US on our own soil. Clandestine guerrilla attacks are the only thing that will work, really, and everyone contemplating attacking the US would see that first off.
I just tried a free internet dictionary to see what would be exact translation for bug out. The result was "tynty pst" which means "to thrust out form the inside of a head" I suppose the thing didn't work properly...

:) Sometimes "American" does not translate into english very well
Hmmm. I guess you all are right. I am probably putting too much thought into this. The exodus to Kanukville was a great example. I guess it all depends on what the individual sees as "threatening" as to whether they would book out to another country. For me, it would take a hell of a lot for me to leave the good ole US of A. But then I'm just too stumborn and hard headed for my own good sometimes.

Both of my parents were immagrants to the United States. My dad "bugged out" to get here. He grew up in Germany, was Jewish, had just been kicked out of college as Hitler passed a decree that no Jews could go to school. He came here in the late 30's. My mom, on the other hand moved here from Nova Scotia for job opportunities.
