I make Ghillie suits. Camoflauge is one of my favorite things and I enjoy employing stealth and deception when paintballing, and the occasional bowhunt. With turkey season comming up here in Wisconsin it got me thinkin-What type of camo do you prefer and use? Any good huntin stories that go with it?

I guess it depends on time of year and terrain. Here in Florida theres always plenty of green and Ive seen some brown camo that stands out too much. Funny how camo has changed in the years from the old military style to the assortment we have now. Treebark I think started this change in the early eightys and I dont even see it anymore.Ilike mossyoak and realtree a.p.but usually whatever pattern my Shannons bugtamer suit is suit me fine and keeps me from getting ate up.

I use RealTree's AP with a little of the APG mixed in.I like it for the spring turkey season.I feel the patern does a good job breaking up my outline. And the color combo matches the woods well this time of year.

I have Mossy Oak and Advantage Timber that I have used in Indiana for whitetails. I just bought some Outfitter Camo to use up here for moose and bear. But in all honesty unless I'm turkey hunting I seldom use any of it. I use tree stands mainly so really have no need to be camoed.

i did a bit of painball in my younger days
i used to cam up and place myself near our flag, i was the last line of defense

i've always thought about making a ghillie suit
i have a piece of fishing net ( 10 x 10 ) that would be my foundation
and would probably add burlap and other materials

" turkey season comming up "

throw some grain in an open field, then place yourself beside it, and catch the turkeys by hand ?

I like the british temperate pattern of cammo, but it aldepends on the place your going, There are some good comercial cammos going with hunting goods suppliers. Or, you could try the cammo of the millitary of your country, i think that should be the best.

When playing paintball I use Tigerstripe.

Old style US Army style woodland camo for everything else. I'd probably get something a little more modern if I got serious about hunting, but I find my old BDU pants good enough.

I made Ghille suits in the mid 80's. The were made for desert wear and worked. Tans, browns and greys and you can/will blend into a bush. a HINT: Watch the soles of your shoes they will give your position away.

I don't really wear camo. I just wear natural colors and stay aware of my scent/wind direction and the noise I make, and that works just fine for the game I stalk (elk, deer, mtn goat, sheep, moose) and I regularly get within a few feet of game. For me, specialty camo is a waste of money.

I read on another forum that camo clothing is more of a status thing. Something to wear at camp and stuff. Sort of a redneck fad. All my life I have wore camo, military mainly, then went out and bought all this camo for hunting and realized it was not needed. I have a guille suit from cabelas, two complete sets of camo for hunting and tons of my military camo from the old BDU, DCU and now ABU. I have matching bags for all the camo but rarely use any of it. The guille suit will never be used but it was cool at the time to have. Just a status thing I guess.

I have found that wearing *earth colored checkered shirts from Wal Mart, a dark brown pair of wranglers and a dark colored ball cap with a bill to shade my face works very well.

You can wear Hunter Red and do ok as long as you watch your shadows, movement in open areas or refrain from any quick or constant movements.

*You can wear that outfit in amost any urban area and not get a second look from anyone

Most people can't refrain from moving. adjusting this or that, scratching, adjusting their position to get more comfortable and they don't realize they are doing it.

Lying, sitting, and or standing still requires practice.

Do you have any suggestions for covering them?

Use the natural materials from the area in which you are operating. IE: local soil mixed with water from your canteen, refresh as required.

That (IMHO) is why the different types of ASAT 3-D Camo is better.

And find this with any other brand:
For those of you on the fence I offer you this challenage:
If you use ASAT Camo exclusively for 1 year and do not see more game than you ever have wearing any other brand of camo, we will buy it back guaranteed!

But I'd rather use hopeak's cabin color camo. Although that color camo must be awfully loud....

thats the truth. Movements are the thing that give you away- even when camo'd up and with the wind in you favor. I should have had that on my list as well. That dang itch under the hat!!! has probably ruined many a shot opportunities

I personally don't bother with camo. I see plenty worn in shopping malls and restaurants by people who have no use for it at all. I have the stuff somebody bought as a gift but I did rather well with earth colored clothing. Guess they are playing "war" or some game because a decent hunter can make his kill. When I was a youngster back in the '50s an old pair of jeans, faded shirt and a Case stockman in my pocket was all I needed.

My "camo" was a tan hunting jacket that I got 40 years ago. It was about as stiff as firehose but it was great. I wore that thing hunting for years and years until it mysteriously shrank and no longer fit. I think the only thing camo I own is a USMC hat that's around here somewhere.

I think the "ghillie suit" is one of the one of best ways to go... you can adapt it to various types of settings by adding grasses, branches, leaves, etc... main thing is... don't overdo it.

I used to have something that I called a ghillie "hide", a 10'X4' rectangle of fish net, with "realtree" camo netting tied to it. I also had brown twine sticking out every six inches or so. Tie grass, sage brush, small branches with leaves/pine needles, etc to it and drape it over you or around you, kinda like a blanket. You could also tie it (or I used brown, wood "spring-type" clothes pins) up as a overhead "tarp", as a "wall", as a "lean-to" or as a "blind".... properly placed and used, its almost impossible to spot.... of course, it doesn't work as well for walking around, stalking, etc. But it helps break up your outline when moving. At those times, I'd wear it kind of like a "poncho", with clothes pins holding it in place.

Oh... also... the best type of camoflauge is to have "something" (man, animal, bird) look at you, and not "see" you. When I lived in Yosemite, I'd regularly wear just "whatever", usually some kind of earthtones, and stalk Black Bear, Mule Deer, Bobcat, Coyote... of course they were "used" to human presence and scent, so that made easier. I even "snuck up on" a dozing coyote once, by moving across 100 yards of open field so I could get close enough for a good photo. The coyote knew I was there and could see me plainly... but, because of the way that I moved, he didn't think that I could see him, so he stayed "hidden". I got about 25 yards away from him, shot a few photos of him (from over my shoulder, facing away from him) and moved on... and he went back to sleep... secure in the knowledge that "that stupid human never even saw me".

woodlander1314: What area of WI are you in? The southern areas (too many damned corn fields) are going to need very different types of camouflage than the northwoods. If you are in woodland, and I'm guessing you are judging by the screen name, is it hardwood, mixed, brush, pine, etc? Take a look around the area you will be hunting in. See the primary colors and basic patterns they make? If you are going to wear camouflage then those are the colors and pattens you need to try to emulate. There are a ton of hunting and military patterns out there. Everyone says theirs is the best. You may need to try a few to see what works for you and what doesn't.

About turkey hunting... The biggest thing is remaining still. I don't know how many hunters I've heard complain that they just couldn't get any turkeys to come in. Yet when I am out in the farm I am constantly able to get within easy shooting distances (assuming that I was actually hunting them) all the time. The trick? No sudden movements. Hell I've been walking and gotten withing 20ft of some! But as soon as I made a quick movement they took flight.

Good luck with your hunting and I hope you find a camouflage that works well for you!

Depending upon on the terrian you can slip issued green or tan boot socks over your boots, after you get to a location that camo is required. The woven material kills the shine and the shape. They also help dampen the sounds of your footsteps or anything scraping against your boots.

The downside is that they wear out quickly, if you do much movement after putting them on.

A worn field pair of unpolished boots seem to blend in. The scuffs Etc

FWIW I had USMC camo drummed into my head for 10 years and taught company level camo classes.

We used the socks for everything including covering the old metal canteen to kill the shine and the sound of a canteen cap accidently hitting the canteen. The new plastic canteens elimated that problem. You can see the socks still used today to kill the shine of the dust glasses worn on the front of the Marines helmets, when they can't get the issued coverings.

They can be used to cover the front of scope to elimate reflection. It will also reduce the light gathering ability of the scope.

If you use a spotlight illuminating the area at night the unprotected scope/ binos lens shine more then you would expect, and make detection easy.

The ASAT test pics page shows you how good it is.

ASAT is good camo. Just remember that when you look at a photo you are only seeing one dimension.

The early WWII USMC Raider camo was very good camo for a stationary object but failed when slight movement was added so they quit issuing it, except for the helmet covers.

The new issued camo helps even during slight movement

I worked with a UK commando by the name of Anthony Lovatt, he taught military camo courses for a good part of his life and he was helping me eliminate shine. I had taken one of those mesh masks you put over the faces of horses to keep the flies out, i cut it into a circular shape and tied it around my scope, it worked pretty well, the only problem i had was i lost a bit of light but luckily the crosshairs on my scope are laser illuminated.

Thanks again for the advice

Yeah i live somewhere between the southern areas and the countryside. The meadows (and the damned corn fields) start to turn into forests and that is where i live. I play in the Jackson area, which is near the northern Kettle Moraine State forests so yes, it is woodland.

Thank you for the suggestions, however i get the feeling many of the people here missed my point. Which is due to a lack of communication on my part. My main purpose in starting this thread was to hear what stories all of you had about your camo, and what brand you prefer. Thanks again

Brand? for me, personally, : whatever I have - which is military bdu's (green woodland).

My stories? Well, the reason I depend more on movement, stealth, wind, natural surrounding, etc is because of my "stories", and experience...

U.S.A.F., "playing terrorist" while serving as a Security Specialist:

- while in the middle of "blowing up" planes, I was running across an aircraft parking area, at night, toward another group of KC-135's when two jeep patrols came from two different directions trying to find me. Caught in the open, I simply lay down flat in the middle of the concrete... yep, they both passed me by (their headlight beams didn't "touch" me).

- another time, I was "playing terrorist" again, when a jeep patrol and two guys on foot were looking for me - at night again. I "curled" myself over the tire of a KC-135, conforming myself to the shape of the tire... after the two guys on foot passed by, I "killed" them and managed to "blow up" another plane before the jeep patrol got me.

- other "camoflauge stories", as a civilian...

- using a video camera, moving through 5' tall grass/weeds/brush, wearing "regular clothes", I spotted a whitetail buck browsing; I moved slowly toward him, with him "upwind", while video taping... I got so close, that I decided to see how close I got before he spotted me... I got within 20' of him before he almost jumped out of his skin trying to run away... it was kind of funny - he literally jumped sideways about 10'. All my video camera caught was a blur of movement when he finally detected me;

- in Yosemite, I spotted a young Black Bear, about two years old browsing for food; using the wind, I got ahead of him and hid behind a 4' diameter tree while waiting for a "shot" at him with my Nikon D-70. Again, just wearing "regular clothes"; because of the brush/trees, I never could get a decent shot of him... so I just watched. When he got 10' away from me, still upwind, he "knew" something was nearby... but because of the wind, and the tree, he didn't know where I was. So, he came around the tree... and when he was about 3 feet away, he saw me, grunted in fright and took off running. He was only a little guy, maybe 100 pounds or so so it wasn't scary;

- another time, I was "trespassing" on someone's land bowhunting - wearing "realtree" camo... I was moving across a field with 3' high grass/weeds and scattered bushes/trees; a truck with two guys in it came out of the woods, moving toward me, driving on a dirt track. All I could do was take one step and lay down, face up behind this 4 foot high bush - from one side, I was completely shielded from view... from the other side (about 230 degrees field of view) I was completely exposed. The truck passed within 10 feet of me... had the driver even glanced back - or checked his rear view mirrow, he would have seen me... but, he didn't.

Bottom line? How you move, AND how you use the wind and surrounding terrain is more important than any brand of camoflauge, IMHO.

One of my best pieces of camo gear is an old gill net. I use it for a blind, tying it to four trees, then filling the netting with branches, etc. It makes a very effective blind.

Other than that, I've got a bunch of army camo. Need a good camo rain jacket though. Last time I went turkey hunting, it rained the whole time I was out.

LOL... I worked Security in Yosemite for my 1st year there; so, I dealt alot with "bear problems", food storage problems, and stupid "humans" interacting with bears... as a result, I often knew where the bears liked to be and where they would go to look for food. So, on my days off, I'd go take photos... and that's when I realized that I started to learn to "read" the body language of bears, and other wildlife. Even made "friends", or at least "passing aquaintences with a few mule deer, a couple of coyotes and a couple of bears (meaning that I recognized them, and they recognized me).

Also, in some ways, Black Bears seem to be my "totem" animal, in the Native American sense... I've got lots of "bear stories" from Yosemite.

from Remy:
"Again...it's CAMOUFLAGE.
Not "CAMOFLAUGE"...unless you feel the need to camouflage the word itself."

LMAO... thanks... some words, I have the hardest time with... must be my lack of edjukashun.... I usually try to "preview" the post... but a few errors always seem to get through... but, of course, I just make mistakes so no one will know that I'm perfect! (yeah right! David laughs as he hits 'submit reply')

If you want something good for all around usage, I'd go with MultiCam (http://www.multicampattern.com).

Basically, it's supposed to work in all sorts of environments...woodland, desert, urban, etc. When I did military simulations, there was a unit that strictly used the stuff and it performed amazingly.

Check out the MultiCam gallery @ this link (http://www.multicampattern.com/gallery.html).

When playing paintball I use Tigerstripe.

Old style US Army style woodland camo for everything else. I'd probably get something a little more modern if I got serious about hunting, but I find my old BDU pants good enough.

I use the same thing, Tiger stripe BDU's is some of the best stuff you can use. I mean hell, it kept us relatively hidden in Vietman eh? How bad could it do us in the woods. I'm not sure if the turkey is a colorblind bird, (as deer see in black and white) However, if they are colorblind, you can use military camo and it should work just fine man.

I'll agree that camouflage does little if anything at all when hunting deer. I've been quite close to many deer when hunting without camo. I've had many deer see me because of slight movements and played the game of moving into position many times when a deer was within 20 yards. More often then not, with a bow, I've lost and the deer won closer than 20 yards on the ground no matter what I wore. They often bolt because of the arrow sliding on the rest which is why I pull the arrow back resting on my finger. The squeak of a finger tab can also give away your position. If you hunt holding your bow, the tip of the limb can move a great deal with only slight movements of your hand. As mentioned, human scent is ignored too much. My favorite camo is pine trees behind me.
