Three Oakland, California, police sergeants were shot and killed in the line of duty yesterday, and a fourth officer was critically wounded, after traffic officers stopped a man wanted for parole violations.

Killed yesterday were Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35. Officer, John Hege, 41, was also shot and remains in grave condition.

Please keep these good men and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

It's sad. It's also sad that so many have such a lack of respect for life. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,510037,00.html

Sorry to disagree with you crash but you just watch what the politicions do with this incident. It will be the law abiding citizens that pay the price for this felon running around with a gun. The new guns laws that will be shoved thru will attempt to disarm the lawabiding citizens and do nothing to prevent criminals from getting guns. As to the Oakland police..... many of them have turned into the modern day pinkertons or the knights of old. For those of you not up on real history the knights of old were bullies and thugs that flaunted their power and shook down the peasantry. None of these officers lived in the neighborhoods they patroled and thus had no connection to the people living there. Am I jaded??? Hell yes! I live in Oakland and have seen this crap first hand.

Fact is, this piece of flotsom (keeping it clean) served notice on decent society some time that he had no regard for others "Authorities discovered the alleged gunman, 26-year-old Lovelle Mixon, had an extensive criminal history. At the time of the shooting, he was in violation of parole for assault with a deadly weapon, police said. " (partial quote from CNN). In the interest of clarity,I am biased having been an LEO for almost 30 years. Trash like this exists in every society, unfortunately our society (the judicial system)seems to have a difficult time dealing with them.
No matter what the opinion of the local Police is, muder of an LEO is an assault on society and can not be tolerated.
And I will say without remorse, he got exactly what he deserved.
And Coot I seriously dobt that there was much cheering going on, the citizens know the consequences of lawlessness

roflmao. sure. that's why there are so few riots. not that I'm cheering that a cop got killed, but he knew the risks when he took the job, just like every soldier that enlists. I know a lot of people that hear "someone shot a cop today" and think "Oh my god, how horrible!" and while in this situation it doesn't appear that way, you have to hear both sides of the situation. While the cop may be wearing a badge, if he is abusing his power and is a threat to me or mine I'd put him down too. no matter what, when it comes down to it, he's just anutha sucka. not that I haven't known my fair share of decent cops, but a greater number of the ones that I've met are simply jaded control freaks and don't deserve to be put on a pedestal because they hide behind a badge.

That's a pretty jaded view of law enforcement. Maybe some of that comes from the idiots they have to deal with on a constant basis. You're missing the point. He was a scumbag who should have never been out on bail or wharever. But the judges just let him out. The community was betrayed as well as the police. The problem with the police and why they get no support from the community is BECAUSE they aren't a part OF the community. Then there are incidents with the execution /shooting of a individual on BART. This does not endear the cops to the community. These officers start out in the high 5 figure $70,000 a year salary, many are in the 6 figure bracket and can afford to live in nicer cities and towns. Yet when something bad happens to the people they are sworn to protect, you get the "have you thought about moving out of Oakland" . Sure I have, just as soon as the housing market rebounds and I know that I will still have a job tommorrow! The Supreme Court has ruled the police depts. are NOT responsible for an individuals safety, only for the general safety of society, and still these political hacks wether they be the police cheifs or the county sherrif will NOT issue CCWs to anyone unless they are famous, politicians or are in some way powerfully connected. So the rest of us are screwed. I see this only in urban areas right now but who knows what the future has in store.

I pray for the officers and their families. As a former law enforcement officer in America and current uniformed police volunteer in Thailand, and as a citizen, I feel deeply offended by the comments of a certain person on this forum. apparently for some reason these officers should not work to provide a decent life for their families, but instead should live in some ghetto so they are close to the community or some such drivel. And then their is some historical thing about the middle ages which has nothing to do with the tragic deaths and injuries of the officers. These officers gave their lives to protect the community, and this person has not, so please show some respect.

Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died...
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.

The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young, widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today...
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors A cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side:
He answered the call . . . of himself he gave his all,
And a part of America died...

Just life experience bro. I grew up on the streets. Whether I was doing something wrong or not every tonfa-swinging redneck in the neighborhood had something to say. It drove them nuts that I was emancipated at 14 and could legally walk the streets after curfew. After years and years of harassment over how I look (or even worse where I live) I don't give anyone respect because of the position they hold, I give them respect if they deserve it. And yeah, it probably is because they have to deal with a constant stream of idiots day in and day out. Not my problem. Tricky subject...

I think the problem i have is in the phrasing seen here : "Please keep these good men and their families in your thoughts and prayers."

How do i know they were "good men" ?
Being a police officer is obviously not synonymous with being good. And dying on the job does not make anyone automatically good either. For all we know, some of them were really "bad men"...with a badge.

In the end...5 lives were lost...not 4.

I think us city kids have a different view of this subject...and while i do not approve of individuals going around shooting human beings regardless of their jobs, status, religion and so on...i also know that it is a lot more complex than just "good" or "bad".

Well, I'll tell you, I'm a criminal defense lawyer and I've also represented dozens of cops. What might my perspective be........

I've seen cops at their best and at their worst. I've encountered them on the road on a more than a few occasions and in court on thousands of occasions. To all of them, I'm an adversary. Nonetheless, we'll have coffee or a beer together, talk about our kids, our lives, and our plans for the weekend.

Years back, I trained many of them.

One day I was kneeling on the road side by side with a cop who was doing mouth to mouth resuscitation on an 85 year old man while I was doing chest compressions. The old man was full of mucus. Nonetheless, that cop didn't stop trying to breath life back into the guy.

Shortly after that, another cop and I were the first two responders on the scene of a serious car accident. Two babies - 2 months old and 4 months old - not in child seats - were trapped in the wreckage. Our arms - mine and the cop's - had been gashed open and were bleeding as we each did CPR on those babies. Neither one lived. We were both at the hospital when the first one was pronounced dead. That cop was crying genuine tears .......

Yeah, I've dealt with bad cops. Several. And it's my job to expose their wrongdoing, and I do my job. However, from my experience, the majority of police officers are good and honorable people.

What did those four dead cops in Oakland do? Two of them stopped a man for a motor vehicle violation. It turned out that he was wanted for parole violations. Those cops were shot dead on the street. Two others were killed in the process of capturing this killer. Sorry, I may have missed something here, but I see NOTHING that justified the murder of any one of these officers. Nothing.

I first met one of the cops I encountered "on the road" when he stopped me for going 85 in a 40 mph zone. He was riding his police issued Harley the first time I "met" him, and this tough cop with a hard reputation was nothing less than courteous and respectful toward me. Hmmmm. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I was respectful toward him.

He became a friend. Then he became a client. Then he became a close friend. He was on duty one day in 1994 when he was killed by a crazed man who shot him with his own service weapon. http://www.frpd.org/Memorial/thomasG.html Tommy was a tough cop. He was loved by many and hated by others because he did his job. I still miss my friend.

I have more close friends who are cops than are lawyers.

Sorry, but I'm just going to keep thinking of these four dead officers as good men, because that's what they probably were.

I didn't respect that many men but my family happens to be full of LEOs and as many on the other side of the fence as well. I have one close relative that's a State Police Detective and his grandpa died in prison for blowing a man's head off with a 12 ga so I saw both sides. As for Oakland, never spent more than a couple of days there in the '60s. I was treated like garbage all across this wonderful country until I got to DC just in time for the Fonda-Kerry speeches, peace marches the "Weathermen" trying to shut down the city and a great time was had by all. Walk up and spit on a man in uniform, kill a LEO one and the same and it ain't getting better but you get killed making 70 grand or a lousy few hundred back then it started and is getting worse. I put up with my share of the garbage and if the LEO is 50yrs younger than me he still has my respect until he does something not to deserve it. Most are good men, some get pushed too far.

I grew up in New York and growing up in the city did not make me disrespectful towards police officers killed in the line of duty. And just because someone does give respect to those men and pray for their families does not mean their life is "miserable." It would appear to me the ones with the miserable lives are those who seem to have the most problems with the police. I too grew up on the streets and was in a gang and had encounters with law enforcement which were not that pleasant before I started working in law enforcement. So what? The fact is that these men died protecting their community. I do not personally know every member of the armed forces who were killed defending our country. But I give them respect because they died for the rest of us. I have been to Oakland and I can tell you being a cop there is no easy job. And as for the perp who got shot, the only tragedy there is the cops weren't able to shoot him first.

A willingness to die for whatever reason (beliefs, the "cause", brothers-in-arms, loved ones, etc) does not define every death in those circumstances as "needed" I understand your point, I think (one never knows for sure with you) but...oh well, I want to buy the world a Coke.

Well, yeah, if you truly want the kind of utopian vision people claim makes a civilized society at peace. I truly believe in the "it takes a village mentality" and strongly feel that if other people in the neighborhood watched out for the kids maybe they bastards wouldn't get their claws in so many. I've read stories on here where people are taking kids out hiking, and teaching scouts, etc. etc. That's exactly what you guys are doing, taking an interest in kids that probably had no chance otherwise, and possibly giving them the tools they need for a fighting chance at making something of themselves.

But as many people as volunteer their time in suburbia, how many of you move into the inner city and volunteer your time? So, while not giving these kids a fighting chance we condemn what they become.

For the most part I believe it is 100% the parents responsibility to raise their children with decency and respect, but when that fails, does it not fall to society to try and steer the individual on the right course of action? Or should we simply toss them in lockup to become a more vicious animal with a pack mentality?

trax
03-24-2009, 01:17 PM
I tend to agree with your point Alpine, unfortunately the other piece of the problem, where I'm sitting anyway, is that we have a legal system that seems willing to jump to the defense of incompetent parents if the "village" tries to intercede on behalf of the child, or turn the child over to foster parents who are as bad or worse than the biological parents. Of course, it also comes down to acts of selflessness, doesn't it? The people that you mentioned who post here about taking youngsters out hiking, camping etc, have my highest regard. As some of you know, part of what my organization does (a big part) is run a youth centre where a lot of these opportunities are made available to young people who otherwise wouldn't have them. Great, yay, good for you Trax...yeah, except I'm getting paid to do it. I try to make a pretty big point out of expressing our gratitude to the people who volunteer here, because there are quite a few and there's a lot we wouldn't get done without them.

There are many people who have had very very hard lives and do not grow up to become vicious killers. I know people here in Thailand who I can pretty much guarantee had a rougher time then this criminal in Oakland and they are good people. Maybe I am naive or just plain stupid, but I don't feel any guilt or responsibility for every punk who shoots somebody. I do volunteer my time to help people here in Thailand and I did so back in the US, but people are not mountain lions or pandas or any other kind of wildlife and they have a free choice to be a good citizen or a dirtbag. I respect every opinion and understand about social and economic problems but in 25 years in law enforcement I have heard all this many times about how we are all responsible for every rotten thing somebody else does and I am sick of it. Prison is the best and only place for criminals as far as I can see, but if anyone wants to take them home to live with them then go ahead and good luck.

Rick

should we simply toss them in lockup to become a more vicious animal with a pack mentality?

You made a compelling argument. However, and I'm speaking from a different world than that, I had to make a lot of choices of who I was going to become. I had to choose which path I wanted to walk down and I chose to hold myself accountable for my actions. If they don't, then, yea, I think there should be repercussion. We have more people per capita incarcerated than any other country in the world. Clearly, we're doing something wrong.

I see prisons on TV (my only measure of experience with them) and I can't help but wonder why we allow TVs, free weights, running tracks, basketball courts, etc. to be financed by my tax dollars. If they got to sit in their cells for 23 hours a day they may not be so quick to go back.

As I said, I know that my opinion originates worlds away from those that have spent time there. But I think there are a lot of others that feel the same way.

Based on what I've read with regard to his criminal history, that guy should have been locked up long ago and should still be in prison. Then 4 honorable men that chose the right path would still be alive.

I've seen prisons up close and personal. The longest I've been in one was less than 8 hours and I couldn't wait to get out.

The prison system is often called "The Department of Corrections." I'm sorry, but I truly believe that you don't "correct" a pattern of behavior by completely dehumainzing someone and stripping them of all semblance of the outside world.

We have a local sheriff who thinks he's the east coast Joe Arpaio. He wants to charge the county inmates fes of $5.00 per day for "expenses" and fees for haircuts and medical and dental costs. Yet, they cannot earn income of more than a few cents a day. How does that teach a man respect for the system? How do you justify the public humiliation of chain gangs for people convicted of minor offenses?

In pure raw numbers, the United States has the largest prison population in the world. We incarcerate for the most minor offenses. We hand out "double digit" sentences as if decades of a man's life mean nothing. Minimum mandatory sentences are utterly illogical in most cases.

I could write a book about the gross failures and disfunctional workings of our legal system.

Incarceration deprives people of the most precious thing they have. Their Liberty. I'm not proposing that prisons provide day spas or fillet mignon or surround sound stereo or a wine of the month club. If prisoners screw up inside the walls, there are plenty of sanctions that can be used.

However, I do believe that prisoners who obey the rules inside should be treated as human beings when incarcerated. Otherwise, don't expect them to act like human beings once they're released.

Anyway, in China, the Death Penalty is a Family Affair – If you are sentenced to death in China, your family is expected to pay for the bullet that will enter your head. http://www.teachabroadchina.com/china-death-penalty-tencent-qq/

Take this example of the unfairness in our system: Man earns $160,000 per year gross. His child support/alimony order is $62,000. Man's employer goes out of business. Man gets new job paying $85,000.00 per year. His net income is less than his support orders, and yet the court refuses to reduce his orders. He is now faced with orders he cannot pay. He falls in arrears. He is incarcerated for contempt of court. After his release, his driver's license is revoked because of child support arrears. He continues to drive because it's his only way to get to work. He is arrested twice and is twice convicted of driving after revocation. He has NO OTHER CRIMINAL RECORD but, nonetheless, is incarcerated. This man spoke at a seminar I attended. I have yet to see any fairness in the way he was treated. How did he deserve to be treated in jail?

Yea, I pulled my post. It's a broken record. It's obvious that the system doesn't work. If it did we wouldn't need to build more courts and prisons. It's turned into a self feeding big business. Employing a lot of people. Is it sustainable? Your brighter than I am about this (comet). Why is there such a big difference in punishments? For instance, someone is guilty of a crime and the punishment is five to ten years in prison. One person gets five years and another gets probation for a similar crime.
