We had some conversations going on about what do we feel a need to report that we might read on here. Ken and I even kidded around about it in another thread, maybe I shouldn't have been joking. This morning there was a story on the news that a student in Montreal picked up on some stuff a student in England was saying in a chat room about attacking his school,(arson and other forms of violence or somthing like that was what the guy said) contacted the police in England and they caught the guy going into his school with knives and "flammable liquids". Every case that I've heard of these kids going "Columbine" in the last few years, people have reported that they left all kinds of warnings out on the web that went unnoticed or were ignored
Now we've got some illiterate 13 year old _________talking about taking a butcher knife to his girl friend? What's the thinking folks, do we have the capabilities (mods? techs?) to track someone like that back to where they're posting from? Should we be taking a harder look at some of this stuff?

I think the biggest problem we face is distinguishing between the harmless clowns who come to the Forum just to see if they can get a reaction from us (the ones who have no life and yet are not dangerous) and the genuine nutcase wanna' be martyrs that may come here expecting to find a bunch of fringe radicals who will cheer on their cause and then say, "Wow, he really had the cojones to do it."
I realize that we should respect each other's right to post some occasional nonsense and humor, as long as it's within the rules, but some of the crap ("I'm in Mexico hiding from my sweetie ....") may not be just an idiotic waste of bandspace and time. It may also be the cry of a lunatic ready to act. The same was true of the kid who was fascinated by explosives. We may never make the connnection, but we may read about him someday.
Exactly what I've been thinking, how do we distinguish, and GAWWDDD knows, I don't want to give up kidding around sometimes, but maybe I should temper some of my own stuff considering anyone out there can be reading it. If people took a lot of my posts seriously from my first year here they'd think I was stumbling around in the forest constantly stoned on magic mushrooms and peyote. It was all joking. Sam Reeves thought I was a full time stoner, of course he also thought I was a communist because I live in Canada...ok, bad example, but you know what I mean.
Yep. On occasion, when most of us realize someone's joking (e.g. by acting insulted) some of us may still believe that the poster actually is insulted. Take this to the next level. What if someone really is insulted and tempers their response with humor so that things don't start flaming up. Would some of us simply think they were joking?
It's often hard to read between the lines. Is a fetishist from Costa Rica just looking for a group to understand him, is he seeking attention, is he just out to start a little crap, or is he a potentially dangerous character looking for a place to do some trolling? All of those thoughts crossed my mind, and I'm still not sure which possibility it most likely was.

I've already contacted the you indiviual you are talking about. I haven't heard back yet.
The capability to back track is there.
I don't think any of us need to change how we act (here or in society as a whole) because one person might be a little unbalanced. However, we do need to be observant and cognizant of the fact that a percentage of the folks joining here do have some form of mental illness. That certainly doesn't mean that all or even a large percentage of them are homicidal. Nor does it mean that they are dangerous in any other capacity. Most folks control their illness with medication and function just fine. But we certainly should take serious anyone threatening violence, in any form, to someone else or to some group.
And, yes, we can determine who their ISP is and where they are being served.

I say error on the side of caution. A visit from the police may be just the wake-up they need to change their direction.
You're putting a lot of wheels and people in motion. I would think you would want to be pretty certain if you start sending the police to someone's house. I'm not thinking about the kid that decided to have some fun. I'm thinking about the officers that have to respond.
That's the point, Rick. How do we distinguish between someone who's just bored and out to have some fun versus the nutcase who does warrant official attention? I know that Chris and the Super Moderators can narrow down the ID of these people well enough that the police can pick 'em out of a haystack in a minute. The question is, which ones fall into the category where police notification is appropriate. Like it or not, a Forum such as this, where we discuss weapons, is probably much more attractive to a homicidal nutcase than a crochet forum where the most dangerous things normally discussed are treads and hooks.
I don't think it's that common of a problem. Since the forum has been open I think Chris has notified the police of one and that was a pretty blatant case. I've yet to see one that worried me though I have had pause to stop and think on a couple. I guess, in the end, it's a lot like porn. I can't define but I know it when I see it.

For the record, Chris has posted elsewhere that he has notified the police twice on certain things. In the end it'll be his call. Finally, that "chief of security" was actually that guy from Costa Rica, AZ.! Stange dude I must say!:cool2:

NEW BEDFORD Authorities arrested a city man Thursday who had been wanted in connection with a vicious stabbing last month at a South End convenience store.
Manuel C. Matias, 21, was apprehended just after 3 p.m. by deputies from the Bristol County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities arrested Matias after conducting surveillance on a South End house in which he was said to be staying. He was seen leaving the house and entering a car with other individuals. Deputies pulled the vehicle over near a city gas station and arrested Matias without incident, said police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey P. Silva.
Even though at large, Matias was still apparently logging on to his MySpace page. The public listing for his page indicated Matias was last online on Wednesday. He listed his mood then as being "stressed."
Days earlier, Matias had posted a warning on the page, telling "snitch (expletive)" to "keep ur mouth closed."
Reportedly accompanied by his brother, Manuel Matias allegedly slashed a 22-year-old man with a box cutter, resulting in injuries requiring 400 stitches to close the victim's wounds.

Just FYI, GeoIP is crap. You can't reliably tell where someone is by using their IP. Sure, I come from an IP assigned to South Texas. Is that really where I am?
There are so many anonymous proxy services out there, and setting one up only takes server access and 90 seconds or so. If law enforcement were to be pulled into the situation then they *may* be able to track you back through the proxy service if they keep records.
I know most of you reading this post are probably thinking "that's way to technical for the average troll or fetishist", but you never know. Technology is such an integrated part of our younger generations lives they don't know wtf to do if they don't have an iPhone in their hand. Find and exploiting a proxy service is kindergarten stuff.
So that guy from AZ? Might not be from AZ. That kid that's talking about firebombing his school with homemade napalm? He might not really be from Michigan, or Alabama, or wherever. He could be on your block and you'd never know.

Everything you've suggested is true. However, with a starting point, the government can sort through the maze VERY QUICKLY. The technology they have (and not just NSA) is impressive, mind-blowing, in fact, and incredibly useful and effective when circumstances justify such investigations. Conversely, the potential for abuse is just as mind-blowing.
and not only what Ken said, but I'd hazard that 90% of people don't know how to go about masking their cybertracks. I don't. That kid in England obviously didn't because a clue from a kid in Canada got him busted. To me it is not much different than the scenario that Ken posted about stopping to help an accident victim or a stranded motorist. For me, I have trouble in looking the other way. Sure, with the web, it is difficult to determine true motives but I let my conscience be my guide.
AP - All of that is true but you also know that all we have to do here is notify the ISP of the situation and 1. They will be able to identify the person in most cases and 2. We've done what we should to try and resolve a potentially dangerous situation.

no, that wasn't what I meant at all. I was just pointing out that if someone says they are from Chile, but their IP says they are from BFE, NY, then they may really be from Chile just using a proxy or any other number of methods to mask their true presence.
And my comments about law enforcement *may* be able to track them was really more at a local or state level. The three letter organizations have some amazing technology and technologists. While the NSA may not be able to keep simple services like DNS online all the time, overall, they are like freakin' bloodhounds on a rabbit if they have reason to want to "talk" to you.
Simple crap like a DDoS is kinda like jaywalking, and probably won't get you caught (unless it's a huge botnet or something), but start talking seriously on the internet about something like a school shooting your planning and they'll have traces up your *** and out both ears before you can say "Oh Fu...".

I watch myself anymore. I plead ignorance about explosives, poisons, fighting to really do damage and anything close anymore. The kids are the same, what they are taught in school is different now. Turnkey kids with too much time on their hands and both parents working just to get by. The drugs have moved from high school down to middle school, next kindergarten. I don't know the answer, only see the results and rural areas where I live aren't much different than anywhere else.
