This is not a car survival kit. This is just what I have in my car right now that could help me out if the situation presented itself. All this stuff ended up in there somehow and some of it was for emergency purposes. (the blanket, fluids, and shovel.) All the rest just ended up there.
Im pretty sure I could use some of this stuff to keep me alive for awhile.

ice-scraper snow brush combo
jumper cables
tow rope/snatch strap (no jokes please :P)
work gloves
extra lug-nuts
replaced "donut spare tire" with real rim/tire (takes more room but worth it since its a real wheel, and there's no speed/mileage limit as with the cheap-o)
My trunk is "lined" with a folded up U-haul type blanket, and I use another blanket as a rear seat cover. (both usable quickly if needed)
flashlight(led) in glove box
big 3d cell led light in passenger compartment
extra pistol magazines and ammunition
shotgun or sks with ammunition
that's most of it. I might have to add more to my list later.
The list is endless.
In both my Mustang (the trunk is PACKED but will still fit two bags of groceries) and my Explorer, I keep 2 duffel bags, a first aid kit, and a large survival pack (10 day outdoor pack - includes food and some water) in my vehicles at all times. GF and kids have smaller versions.
1st. Duffel has "personal items" such as a full change of clothes, extra hat, coat, jacket, sweatshirt, rain gear, shoes, gloves, etc. It also contains a loaded shaving kit, a duplicate of every toiletry I use, prescription and OTC meds, and assorted personal items and a book. Just in case.
2nd. Duffel is for my car itself. 200 piece Craftsman tool kits in both metric and standard (my vehicles each require both). Spare belts, hoses, lamps, bailing wire, duct tape, electrical tape, fuses, oil, tow strap, hammers, pry bars, bolt cutters, work lights, road flares, emergency strobe light, extra fluids, anti-freeze, washer fluid, de-icer, syphon, jumper cables, work gloves, jump suit, and an empty 1 gallon gas can (for me or whoever - you never know).
My first aid kit is what some would call a trauma kit. Suitable for a medical rescue unit. "Nuff said here.
My survival pack contains over 100 items plus food. Ive posted my checklists in other threads.
I also have a small boat fender (water rescue floatation) a collapsable shovel, fire extinguisher, a snow brush, and a old style hallogen tool, along with a dependable car jack and lug wrench. Oh yeah, a spare tire, too. I check and inflate it if necessary everytime the other tires are inflated.
All of this stuff stays tied down with bungie cords attached to eye-bolts.
I also keep a GPS, road maps, and an old cell phone with a charger in the car. The old phones still reach 911, even if they're not active on your plan. Just a back-up to my regular cell phone.
And this doesn't include the regular items in the passenger compartment.
Have I needed this stuff? Yes, countless times.
Example: I once broke down on the Southeast Expressway out of Boston at around 1:00 a.m. My accelerator cable snapped. After I cut away at the rubber cover, braided exterior cable, and plastic cover, I was able to reach the cable itself, which I spliced to several twisted lengths of bailing wire, which I looped and twisted taught, and was on my way. It held 'till I got home.
Many more stories, but you get the point.

Ken, trash the bailing wire and get some .020 and .040 stainless safety wire. available at any performance shop. the .020 is great for snare wire and the .040 is great for heavier jobs.

and dozens possibly hundred of more items which have their uses im sure. The bed is full of crap.
2002 1500HD 6.0l silverado crewcab with 3in lift and 33" tires. Has decent clearance never had it stuck to where I wasn't able to get it out on it's own power.

For all of you that have wool blankets in the car/truck (like me) make sure they are sealed and have some sort of moth balls (insert joke here) in the bag with them. I got mine out at the beginning of winter, and there was not much left of them. Now they are vacuum sealed with repellant.

When I had a car (lost the lisence due speeding, I was young and stupid...) I had a tow cable, warning triangle and a first aid kit. An when I gather the money for a new licence I will have those same items, nothing extra. If it is cold, I will wear more clothes, not count on having my car full of stuff.

When I had a car... I had a tow cable, warning triangle and a first aid kit. An[d] ...I will have those same items, nothing extra. If it is cold, I will wear more clothes, not count on having my car full of stuff. That sounds like a dangerous way to tempt fate to me. Unless your car is filled with other stuff (people, luggage, etc. for instance) there is no reason to let all the extra space go to waste when you could have a few beneficial items to help you if something does go wrong like your car breaks down, you get stuck in the snow or mud, etc.
Over the years I have had the regular opportunity to help people get unstuck and I have always been amazed at how easily they could have self-rescued, or at least have been more comfortable awaiting their rescue, had they only kept just a few simple tools in their vehicles.
Most of the year hot and humid. Mild to cold winters.
I normally have my tool bag that has all of the basic hand tools a person uses such as hammer, socket set, pliers, screwdrivers, electrical tape, I also in another bag carry a few can goods like beef stew, corned beef hash and some granola bars, victorinox spirit tool, rope, poncho, kabar knife, can of fix a flat, baby wipes, first aid kit, matches, magnesium fire steel, GI style canteen and 2 flashlights with extra batteries.

I have to agree with lucznik. Tempting fate is not something I care to do. I would much rather have survival gear and not need it than to need it and not have it. (where have I heard that before?). Just a few winter items could be the difference between life and death.
Yeh, I agree I live in a hot weather area and I still carry matches and a fire steel. If you really don't care about the weather carry at a minimum a couple of ways to start a fire and something to eat and a couple bottles of water. If there is snow no real reason to worry about the water you can use the fire to melt snow and still have water. Plus with some noodles, oatmeal in a ziplock bag or any other dry food that all you need to add water to will be greatly appreciated if you have to end up spending the night somehwere due to a breakdown. It does not have to be much a quart size ziplock back full of oatmeal will fit in your console, glove compartment, trunk pretty much anywhere in your vehicle and can be rationed out to three days worth of food at one meal a day if neccessary.

The reason why I don't have anything else in the car is that I'll always be within five miles of occupied houses. This country has only 5 million people livin in it, but they are relatively evenly spread. If I'd go to lappland for a huting trip I would have more stuff in the car, but when driving from city to city or home to work there is no need for any more stuff. just spare wheel, tools to change it and those mentioned earlier.
If you're comfortable with that, it's fine. You certainly know your skills better than I do. The same could be said for the U.S. and a lot of Canada but I sure wouldn't want to try and hike 5 miles in a blizzard without extra gear and I wouldn't want to wait it out in a vehicle without it either. You can read news reports every winter of individuals and/or families that were trapped just a few miles from safety. Some make it, some don't.
Peoples over all knowlege of nature and first aid, as well as density of population make a great deal. Also climate matters a lot. I can't remember when I last time saw/heard of REAL blizzard in finland. There just aint any. Temperature can drop really low, but the weather usually is very manageble. Here people are lost in traffic cause the driver was drunk.

nope the coffee can(actualy a stainless pot the same size) and candles are in my bob. I used to carry kitty litter but it absorbs too much moisture. Switched to a 50Lb bag of sand when snow is possible.
