View Full Version : Where Would You Live?
Here's the entire scenario.
You wake up tomorrow and (First Group) you, your family, and your 25 closest friends are all alive and well. In addition (Second Group) only 1,000 other people are alive in the world. In this second group are people from all walks of life - physicians, academics, farmers, engineers, lawyers, mechanics, gunsmiths, biologists, contractors, technicians, etc. Everyone else who was alive yesterday has just disappeared.
All of the physical infrastructure which existed yesterday is still present, and only a one year supply of food exists for both groups.
You are in charge of the survival of both groups for the next 25 years. You must all continue to reside in the same area. You can all be transported (one time only) to whatever place on earth you choose.
Where would you choose to live, and why?
I think right where I am. The Midwest offers a lot from varied wild life to a decent growing season with rich soil and mild winters. And I'm not on the food chain.

Interesting question, Ken. I can't really answer in regards to other countries, not having enough experience overseas to answer wisely... though, I kind of think South Africa, Hawaii, Brazil, or Greece might merit consideration.
Here in the contiguous United States, My top choices would be:
Charlettsville, VA - not too hot, not too cold; lots of land for agriculture; lots of room to spread out and lots of empty million dollar houses! I claim Monticello!
Colorado Springs, CO - not too hot, not too cold; lots of land for agriculture; lots of room to spread out and lots of empty million dollar houses! I claim the Broadmoore!
Nashville, TN - not too hot, not too cold; lots of land for agriculture; lots of room to spread out and lots of empty million dollar houses! I claim the Opryland Hotel!
And, of course, I'd go on "shopping trips" through all the empty houses!

I would stay right where I am. Along with large garden tracts, there is an abundance of wildlife in our area to supplement meals with. We could grow our own food and hunt for meat.
With all of the different professions, everyone would have something to bring to the table.

Probably somewhere in the sub-tropics of Mexico. Oh yeah, you said current infrastructure; theirs sucks. Somewhere else semi tropical then.

Cities developed where they are around the world primarily because of the ease of transportation and proximity to resources. Given that and the desire to not screw up the planet all over again, I'd want a high density small city so we're not completely dependent on cars/oil in a mild climate with adequate precip. Probably one of the old world fortress cities of Spain, France or Italy. They sure make a lot more sense than the urban sprawl we're living in and they've stood the test of time for roughly a thousand years.

Back to the question:
Somewhere here in California, Maybe Napa, Central Valley, or one of the northern farming areas. The weather is mild lots of ifrastructure to scavage. And if we going to be around that long we will probably be multiplying so the need to grow lots of food with plenty of water available.

I would stay here in Texas where we have our land. Our gardens are established, good water, lots of wild life and the lake for fishing. We have lots of room to expand, gradated terrain and a good home base already in place.
Just wonder how to get everyone here...I have thoughts on that but will save it for another thread. Thanks for the post!

The cold is a plus as you don't need refridgeration for part of the year. But it will be labor intensive as gathering wood for heat during the winter months... and then there is mud season (which for me was worse than the snow) Yes you do or will have to worry about earthquakes.
I agree there is game a plenty, but once the majority of people are gone the wildlife will rebound.

I was thinking coastal too. In the US, along the Eastern seaboard, far enough inland and north to escape most of the hurricanes that ground on that side but not too far to send out ocean fishing forays to supplement game and inland fishing. Not much farther north than a solid 6 growing zone though.
I haven't seen too much of Europe but some parts of France would work. Italy would work well too. The Lucca-Livorno area is very nice. Volcanoes could suck though.

New Zealand, in the matter of only a few hours any climate you want, beautiful place to live, ocean all the way around, plenty of fish, you very seldom hear of storms bothering that island (two, north and south islands). I was stationed in Christchurch, and couldn't have been happier any place on earth. Also there isn't any thing there that eats or kills you for wildlife or bugs

Question about California. Isn't much of the water (for irrigation) in CA diverted from rivers that flow in? Would Cali be more arid with less vegetation should the irrigation discontinue? I know that there are "people" from all walks of life who could keep the water flowing, but I think I'd rather be somewhere that you don't have to depend on it.
While I've never been there, the midwest would be ideal for farming and hunting.

I was thinking about this a bit more. There are many, many places that if you could magically transport your group of 1000 to that they would endure less hardship. In the area that I live now I am quite comfortable and know that a group as described in the original scenario would do just fine - as I'm sure most of you reasoned as well. I was stationed at Pearl Harbor for 4 years - Oahu or one of the other Hawaiian Islands - plenty of infrastructure on the island, growing season 365 days a year, no extra effort involved due to climate (chopping a winters worth of wood for heating), plenty of fish and game, fresh water is more abundant on some islands than others (mountains of Kawaii - very heavy annual rainfall). There are probably many places on the planet where a scenario like this would be "easier" than others. Of course there are drawbacks to any location.

This (The Original Thread Question) is good because it sidesteps the un-sidestep'able issue of Seven (7) BILLION other ferocious human predators.
Food, Clothing and Shelter. The shelter and clothing for 25,000 humans for 25 years should be easy, if six billion, nine hundred and ninety-nine million, nine hundred and seventy-five thousand humans have just departed.
That leaves FOOD. Where on the planet is food most abundant.....? Oceans, and fertile valleys that are not polluted.
I still don't have a good answer, but I like the Question......

Root cellars are your friend. But also, in California, there are enough solar panels that you could salvage them and use them to power appliances.
If not California I'd probably pick the south of France or parts in Italy, coastal areas that are mild, good for growing, and access to the water for fishing.

Mmmmm, I'm thinking about my trip through Tuscany in 2005 and salivating. Very mild temperatures moderated by the Medeterranean Sea, incredible permiculture in vineyards, olive trees, cork trees, a mixture of rural farmland and small pockets of dense communities, the abundance of the ocean within a short bike ride, Roman architecture and roads that have stood for thousands of years... That's a good place to restart.
California's wine region is pretty similar. I've heard that Croatia is similar to both for climate, too.
