Due to a terrorist attack with a dirty bomb you have to leave your home and city.
You are located in Kansas City, KS.
You feel that the best course of action is to make it to Dallas, TX.
The environment is farms and mixed woods.
It's the middle of summer.
The weather is clear and sunny. However, giant thunderstorms with tornado's and hail may be encountered.
The temp in KC is 98F. Hot and humid. At night the temp is 92F.
There are three in your initial party. Yourself ( 45 Yrs.), Your wife / husband ( same age), Daughter (16).
You, your spouse and child are in good health.
For equipment you have been diligent in your duties. Since being a member of a certain survival forum you have gained in knowledge and procured the needed equipment. Each member is similarly equipped with some sharing to as not make things too redundant. The common equipment is: two, 2-man tents. one multi-fuel stove. one main first aid kit. one survival manual with plant ID. One rappelling rope with carabiners. One Hatchet. A GPS. One water filter.
Each person has the following equipment and is comfortable in the use of their survival tools: 22 pistol and 250 rounds of ammo. Personal first aid kit. matches and fire steel. A change of clothing. Six MRE's. 100 feet of Para cord. A fixed blade knife and a multi-tool. A mini fishing kit. A flash light. A mess kit and six fuel tabs. A compass. A cell phone. 250 dollars cash and a roll of quarters. One sleeping bag. A pack to hold your trash. One rain suit. One canteen. You are dressed in jeans and a t-shirt with boots. And lastly a Plan with a rendezvous point and phone numbers.
Do to accidents and the mass evacuation of the city you are unable to use your car to leave. The city will be uninhabitable for years. You have family in Dallas, TX. In Dallas you will have a place to stay and possibly a job. You decide to use the bicycles that have been collecting dust for all those years.
So, you find the pump and get to work.
It's roughly 500 miles to Dallas. How far could you travel each day? What precautions would you take for security? What skills could you barter with? What would be your first course of action? Would you be a loner with your family or hook-up with others?

Good news...Uncle Jim and Aunt Sally are on the way.
You were finally able to get through to your family in Dallas. They are leaving to drive and pick up you and your family. Due to all lanes in use for the evacuation you will still have to travel by bike for two days to a pick up point.
How far could you travel each day?
I'll probably grab my atlas just to keep me straight and try to head out to I35. The first few days will be slow going because of the amount of traffic and congestion but the bikes will probably help. Traveling along the northbound lane might speed up things if traffic permits and I doubt many are traveling toward the city. I'll plan to travel 5 miles for the first couple of days then 30 miles per day thereafter.
What precautions would you take for security?
1st being vigilant. Aware of my surroundings. 2nd. Weapon close at hand. 3rd Stay together. 4th Try to remain inconspicuous as possible. Lot's of folks on the road will help with that.
What skills could you barter with?
I'm pretty handy fixing things. Some automotive for sure. Some knowledge of radios. Lot's of practice fixing field gear. :innocent::)
What would be your first course of action?
Take stock of what we have. Lay out a plan and route. Devise some way for the bikes to carry the bags.
Would you be a loner with your family or hook-up with others?
Certainly depends on situation but in general I'd probably hook up with others if there is something to be gained. Security/Safety would be my main concern for my family and a larger group might provide that.

I would first choose the route. My preference initially would be to go cross country to the maximum extent possible for the first 100 miles or so. This would slow “rate of march” to approximately 10-15 miles a day (if more is a bonus). This rate should increase as we get used to the routine , so it is conceivable that we will hit my 100 mile goal in 3-5 days.
I would outfit the bikes to be equipment haulers (similar to what is seen in 3rd world countries). This would allow time for acclimating to new levels of physical activity, while allowing a slightly increased payload capacity for “consumables” initially (specifically water). On each person will be at a minimum one MRE, a weapon with reloads, one camelback type water vessel, first aid kit and either a knife or multi tool. All else will be packed on bikes, with as much water in various containers as is manageable.
The pistols will be carried in a concealed manner, this to reduce a “warrior” appearance when we come upon other travelers. When we do happen upon “fellow travelers “ we assume a tactical spread to ensure we are not in one convenient bundle for anyone with ill will. For the first 4-5 days will not forage for food (will take advantage of any freebies though) to get some distance from KC. For the same 4-5 days will try to maintain a fireless camp leaving no trash. Will limit each member to one MRE daily for the first 4-5 days . During stops and overnight will maintain a watch , with one member on watch at any given time (rotating shifts). If weather appears threatening, will construct a lean to type structure with a brush floor to keep us out of the rain. Cell phone will be kept off to save battery. Initially will avoid contact with other travelers, this will allow us to get used to being a team, after, will play it by ear. After we have made the 4-5 day goal, then will re assess if the cross country route is good or if a road ride is appropriate. At this point will also attempt a cell phone contact with the Dallas homestead for any Intel they may have on what is going on in the intended route etc and arrange next call in interval. From this time forward will start foraging, preference is purchasing or bartering for supplies due to the “dirty “ nature of the calamity. Our barter will be woodworking, mechanical (me), medical (spouse). Then just keep plugging away until destination is reached. We take a slow deliberate approach to this situation since this is an already stressful situation and wife and daughter have had minimal exposure to long term stress or physical exertions.
Rebel,
I'd be worried about how I was going to fit all my cases of Arthur Bryant's and Gates sauces into Auntie's car. Last time I was in K.C. I brought 10 cases back home. The lawyer I flew out there with for a deposition brought back two bottles and was calling me in a week pleading for me to sell him a case of Extra Hot. I figure that stuff would be great to barter with anywhere I ended up. :tongue_smilie:

Great thought out answers Rick and Pal. I like the conservative approach. Working into a new lifestyle. Checking out the terrain, equipment and security. Modifying the bikes was another good idea.
Ken. As luck would have it... someone offered you a ride in their van. You can take all the sauce. Sorry no room for the bikes.
Wait a minute......OHHH NOOooooo Ken! After ten miles they are kicking you out.
The daughter and wife are allowed to stay and the sauce! (This is as close as I'll come to being a moderator).

I pick up some radioactive nachos from Taco Bell before I leave Kansas City.
:)
Seriously, why would my destination be a warmer climate? I would guess to survive the coming winter. Was that your reasoning?
As I biked down to my destination, I would camp maybe 1/2 mile off the road/path to avoid detection. Prevention is the best way to stay safe. I would also choose campsites surrounded by lots of gravel or stones. They are noisy when people walk on them, alerting me to animals or people getting near. I might take a couple bells to act as an intruder alarm. Hook them up to some string.
I got my pumper LED light with rechargable battery, although the batt is a bit old so might give out on me any day. I open the case to figure out which batt this monster uses.
I also grab my 9v LED light, as I can find a new 9v batt almost anywhere or scrounge it from found equipment. Plus, a 9v powering an LED lasts a LONG time, months even, with occasional use. I can also rewire the flashlight to use 6 AA or AAA batts if needed. I just need the batt holder and some wire. Both lights would only be used if other lighting is not available.
I will also bring a full size bath towel and cut a slit in the center, like a Mexican serape. I can take off my shirt, wear this wet towel to keep cool while riding. The breeze will evaporate the water and cool me off. And chicks will dig it.

I have a kit in my bug out bag with 8 of the little battery powered personal security key chain screamers. It's a small black box with a pull-pin style activation. When you pull the pin there's a 130db siren and a flashing series of LED's. About $10 each online. I stake the screamer down using a tent stake and tape, camoflauge it, and run the perimeter wire outside of the dog's leash range when he's staked down.
While some people may notice your wire depending on your skill level (and theirs) most people don't even consider the fact that a camp in the woods would be alarmed with a permiter trip wire, unless they watched you put it in. I've actually been paranoid enough to set this up in stages to hide my activies, but so far, I haven't had any humans make it past the permiter wire without tripping it.
He tends to set those up in the mall. Certainly gets his share of attention.

Edit...Of course I thought the same about Oklahoma City as well..

Thanks for the great idea, Sapper. Somewhere around I have a couple of the perimeter tripwire set-ups that use a blank 12 guage shell. (There's also a model that uses high intensity Cyalume light sticks.) The key chain screamer set-up seems to be much more compact and functional. What's the brand name of the screamers you use?

130 db...? flashing leds? Sounds like he gave his wife a photon 2 and told her to scream and flash the light if she felt a tug on the wire...

the 12guage ones were what I was looking for, but no one around here carried 'em. I ended up at the army surplus store here as a last result and found those keychain alarms. They may have had a brand name, but it wasn't one I recognize or remember, since it's not on the alarm itself. I've seen some other ones on the web. I like the ones with the led flashers because it alerts you to what area of the permiter they are/were on.

Ken - I've got some that I use when I travel. They're designed to hang on the doorknob, and when the knob is touched the alarm sounds. They're about the size of a pack of cigarettes. Here are some keychain alarms that might work. http://www.streetdefender.com/

They look like they'll do the job. Probably should waterproof them so they won't short-out in rain, etc., but that shouldn't be difficult to do in any event.

a moderately active person on a bicycle should be able to do 5 miles in an hr easily on road. unless we are talking about a single geared bmx type bike.
when i was a bit younger i could knock off a 68 mile cross country type trail in a "huffing" 5 hrs...regularly.
i took my mildly overweight (non-smoking) neighbor on a bike ride last year. he had not ridden a bike in a few years and he was able to do 6 miles in 45 minutes. his "taint" was sore but otherwise we rested for a while and rode 6 miles back. this is not an "active" type person ;)
i guess what i am saying is....bike travel has been underestimated here.
enjoy!
I think you are forgetting the fact that multitudes are trying to leave the city in the scenario impeding your travel. At least for the first couple of days. Perhaps longer. Then you have to consider that you are loaded down with all the gear listed above. That's a lot different than zipping blissfully along. My wife and I did centuries when we were younger so I have a pretty decent idea of what I'm capable of on a bike. Today, it would take a century just to get to the end of the block.

Barefoot: I agree that my timeframes probably are grossly underestimated. Although I would be using the bikes for equipment transport initially and then when a road trip starts I am sure the mileage would increase. I learned from an early age that it is best to let "trouble" get tired coming to me, rather than me getting tired running to trouble. Further advantages are as I mentioned in my initial post gives us a chance to "gel"as a team, and the ladies a chance to cope with the stress and extended physical exertion. I would probably also be avoiding the cross country trails, prefering to walk just inside a woodline. This would dramaticaly slow us down.
Tires? On a bike? Well I'll be. That's a pretty clever idea there counselor.

An old relay winding is small enough, has enough extra fine copper wire to make a simple alarm with a battery light or just enough noise next to your ear. Operates on an open, easy to rig and almost impossible to see, can't be felt without breaking. Have used that across almost everything inside buildings to warn me if I was being checked on at night.
Try this:

The first day: It ended up being a partial day. However, with the gps and atlas you and the family were able to leave the city. You noticed some looting but they were too busy to pay you any attention. You got about 5 miles south with an hour of day light to make camp.
The first night: You made camp away from the road in a ravine for concealment. You decided not to pitch the tents because the weather was clear. You all enjoyed a nice MRE cooked with the stove and that helped with moral. The family is doing fine as is the gear. For security, each took a 2 hour watch in addition to your perimeter security devices. You could hear people noises in the distance and that made you uneasy so you didn't sleep much. Your family is practicing the "no light or noise discipline". We'll see what tomorrow brings...

Do you want to add or change anything?
Yeah, I bet their 12 gauge fireball would change the mind of anyone set on harming you. You wouldn't have to hit them. The flame thrower affect would certainly give them something to think about.

yessir, that's the ones I was hunting for. At the time I was purchasing I didn't have the luxury of waiting on them to be shipped, I needed them that day.
I really like coot's idea about the relay wire as well. seems like it would take a lot less force to trip it and you could attach all the permiter wire to a single alarm point in camp that doesn't alert everyone within a 1/2 mile that *something* just happened "over there where the flashing light and noise" is.
But then, depending on the situation, the rounds sent downrange in the intruders direction are going to alert them anyway.
Rebel, sorry to have quasi-hijacked the thread. I have been intending to write up my response to the scenario, I just haven't had time. Maybe today.

Your tired from the stress and lack of sleep. The squirrels are fussy and so is daughter Suzie Q. It seems the situation is kicking in for all.
After making it back to the road you are almost run over by a van.
It's with a heavy laden heart I say this and I'm not 100% positive but, it looks like the van that had stolen Ken's BBQ sauce. The driver had a close resemblance to Remy and the woman may have been Ken's wife. There was an eerie cackling as they sped by and the woman was holding a knawned on rib bone. There was also BBQ sauce streaming back from her lips. Almost to her ear!
