View Full Version : Weight: your "go-bag" / pack ?

I spent about 15 minutes doing searches for "pack weight" or the "weight of your "go bag" and found scattered posts/threads with answers scattered through them... but nothing "lumped" all together... hence this post...
Just curious as to how much total combined weight you would normally carry on your back in a backpack or in your "go bag" or in your "fanny" pack?
Now, I realize that most of us would carry some items in our pockets, on our belt, around our neck, etc... so, I'm assuming that total combined weight of those items would be less than 10 pounds (not including, of course firearms, ax, etc).
A POLL is included ABOVE...
So here is the scenario (realizing, of course, that you can have an infinite number of "what if" variables... which I'd rather avoid for simplicity sake).
You need to "get out of Dodge" within the next 2 hours... (that means leave your home). For various reasons, you will have to walk (or run!). For safety & security reasons, you will have to hike a minimum of 20 miles (within 3 days) and be gone, from home, for a minimum of 7 days, and for a maximum of 14 days. If you will be going with others (family, friends, etc), everyone above the age of 20 has to carry roughly the same average amount of weight in their pack/go-bag/fanny pack (for simplicity sake in figuring out what the average person here would carry).
You can carry anything that you want with you... remembering however, that you will have to walk/hike/carry it for at least 20 miles and be gone for at least one week... and maybe be gone for up to 2 weeks.
How much would the backpack/go-bag/fannypack weigh?
(and yes, I realize that we could all figure out ways to "cheat"... so just go with me here! :lol:)
Well, I figure that my pack alone is about 2 1/2 lbs. Inside my pack or on my person will be:
Filled Camelbak: 7 lbs.
Firearms (2) and ammo: 5 lbs.
Katadyn pocket water filter and supplies: 1 1/2 lbs
Long Term Survival kit: 10 lbs. +
Sleeping bag: 1 1/2 lbs.
Tent: 4 lbs.
Electronics and rechargable batteries: 3 lbs. +
Personal documents, etc: 1 lb.
Now - consider the extra clothes, food, first-aid/medical, toiletries, etc. I keep ready to go - yeah, over 45 lbs. Easy.
Hiking 20 miles in three days with a 45 lb. pack should be no problem unless someone becomes severely injured. Hell, I've had to swim over a mile with a 25 lb. pack strapped on, and I suspect many here have accomplished much longer swims with much heavier packs.

Ya know, I never thought to weigh my pack. I figure if I don't mind carring it, it doesn't matter to me.

I depends. In the scenario that you have given, without further information, I would have to say well in excess of 45 pounds. First off, I'm not a bugout guy. I've picked my location because I'm reasonably confident I'm away from most natural disasters and probably the majority of man-made kind, too. I'm 175 vertical feet above the closest creek, so it's not going to be a flood. I'm in a relatively quiet geological zone, too.
I'd have to agree that mine is going to vary by situation and it's very unlikely that I'm not going to grab three or more duffles and toss them into the car and put the bike on top. One is going to be my BoB, another is going to be 30 days of MREs and other food, and another is going to be whatever else seems worth grabbing at the time. If all else fails and I have to abandon the car along the way, I'll have extra gear and food in the car to cache if I can't get somewhere far enough away from whatever has me on the move. While I may have to abandon my car at some point, I have a bike with a trailer that can carry 70 pounds plus a camelbak on my back. I can't imagine too many scenarios where I couldn't bike or drive. I've covered 160 miles in 24 hours on a bike once in the last three years (along with numerous 70-100 mile days since) and that compares to probably an upper limit of 20-ish on foot with a pack. Normally, I won't try to cover irregular ground with more than a 45-50 pound pack on foot.
I also have one food cache out there already, hoping to add another couple this summer, as I'm running shy on space in the house currently (it already takes up on spare bedroom). As asked before, where are you going, what are you running from, how far do you need to travel to get to safety, and will you be able to return. All are questions that are worth examining for each scenario.

The poll says how much "would" you pack. How much I regularly pack and how much I'd pack if I was get'n out of Dodge are two different things. If I HAD to leave the safety of my home you can bet I'd bring anything and everything I could grab or drag to my truck. If you mean leave on foot, that depends on where I'm going. Am I going to walk 130 miles to my cabin from my house? Or do I get to drive half way then walk? My pack on a normal outing is around 35 to 40 lbs. If I was leaving and not coming back for a long long time I think I'd could pack as much as 50 - 60lbs. There is probably 100 lbs or more of food in my pantry and I'd try to bring as much as I could. My bug-out-bag and my pack are two different kits. My BOB is much smaller and only has the essentials for survival (fire, water, cordage, MRE's, lightsource, knife, gun ect.) no tent, no sleeping bag, no other luxuries. My BOB is maybe 15 lbs and is a grab-on-the-way-out-the-door-quickly kind of thing. If I have any time at all... like five minutes or so, I can get my backpack together and be fully geared-up. But if I hear a sudden loud explosion outside and its a WTF kind of thing, it's grab the BOB and go.

The first question was how much could you carry, and then you asked how much does your BOB weigh? I think I muddy'd up my response but what I meant was that my BOB is not my "pack". From descriptions of others BOB's contents, it seems like there's is. I have always thought of a BOB as more of an emergency kit to use in the mean time until I could either get somewhere else or until I could gear up properly.

I had to say 35-40 lbs. Mostly because my pack will only support that much weight and due my packs age. (I guess I need a new pack after all) Unless I'm stopping frequently or moving through difficult terrain, 20 miles is a day trip.
Don't you think allowing 2 hours for getting ready is a bit excessive? I have myself situated to 3 minutes. That is mostly for packing clothes for season and telling the woman to decide if she is staying or going.

Mine is going to be over 45 pounds for the length of time you are talking about. Trying to hike 20 miles with it would be a serious workout.

One of the biggest factors that would affect the weight of my pack in the scenario is water and ammunition - again, knowing why I was walking out for 14 days would be useful.

With 6 liters of water and all my clothes (including boots), 10 days worth of food. My pack maxs out at 65 lbs. Granted if I need to grab my pack and run in the middle of the night, it will lighten up as soon as I have a chance to don my clothes.

I think there's at least the need for some clarification on the question whether this is a "I can't go back home" scenario or a "a week away and I can go back". Also what time of year is it? Is this a local, regional, or national problem? If I can go back home, will it be ashes or am I escaping something that's only harmful to humans, not property (e.g. fallout, virus, nerve agent, etc.)?
At this point I have three go bags and three large duffles in my storage room. One is a shelter bag that will give me things to gather information and stave off boredom in a hotel room or emergency shelter. Games, cards, i-Pod charger, transistor radio with TV channels/AM/FM/SW, normal clothes, comfortable shoes, no cook food (bars and such), and a small butane stove with some normal cook food (m&c, etc.). I then have a kit that's prepared for nightmare scenarios with body armor, NBC suit, mre's, combat gear, and the essentials of wilderness survival. I also have a winter kit with extreme cold weather gear to operate in sub-zero temperatures. If I was never coming home, even if it was 90F outside in mid-July, I'd want my winter kit so I could cache it somewhere.
As mentioned above, there's too many variables. If you want a more concise set of responses, start a new thread with the scenario you envision and then ask what we'd grab.

Ahhhh. All the more reason to use the checklist when asking these scenario type questions.

How about if we break it down like this
1: SIMP the Stuff In My Pockets
2: GHB Get Home Bag (as in from work etc.)
3: GAG Grab And GO (small version of a BOB)(mine is the most excellent E&E pack from Kifaru)
4: BOB Bug OUt Bag (7+ day kit)
5: BOV Bug Out Vehicle (your vehicle kits would also go with/in this)
6: BOL Bug Out Location (where you're planning to go if you must bug out)
7: BIB/BIG Bug In Bag/Gear (This is gear and supplies you have seperate from your everyday stuff just in case you must shelter in place)
Feel free to add or massage this as you see fit. The idea is to improve our kits and skills by interaction with others.

I find it odd that people are not Crystal clear on this issue, and that many are guessing.
Not good or bad, not right or wrong, just interesting that people know more clearly how many miles per gallon their car/truck gets.......but don't know how much weight they can pack.
My experience is that "YOU" can pack much more weight than you think you can.

I thought it was how much your pack weighed,not how much you CAN pack. I can hump a 80 lb ruck with a SAW, full basic combat load , two bangalores and an AT mine for days, doesn't mean I'm gonna. I don't need to know how much I CAN carry. What I need to know is;
A; How much does the gear I gotta get from point A to point B weigh, roughly.
B; Can I comfortably carry it?
If not, is it critical, or can it be abandoned?
If critical, what are alternate means of getting it there safely?
