I have and use firesteels for starting fires and I am a firm believer in them. But this past Christmas I got a Blastmatch and I decided to give it a try today. I used dryer lint for tinder and gathered some twigs and small sticks for whenever I got it going. I arranged my twigs and tinder then I proceeded to use the Blastmatch. I tried for about 2 minutes before I got enough sparks to light the dryer lint. I made another arrangement and this time I used my firesteel. I had fire after the second swipe of my blade. I am so used to using a firesteel that the Blastmatch seemed difficult but I suppose that I just need to play with it a little more and then give it another fair shake.

I don't have a Blastmatch, but could it be that there is a coating on the ferro rod part (like on a Swedish Firesteel) that needs to be scraped off to get a good shower of sparks? Everything I've seen and read about the Blastmatch has been positive.

Something is wrong. Blastmatch delivers an unbelievable shower of sparks. Far more than any most steels. It's a bit heavy but it does what it advertises. Just my 2 cents.

I concour, there is a coating on the blast match, just as there is on the strike force. You do need to ensure that you are pressing down on the striker hard enough and briskly push the blast match down. You should get a great shower of hot sparks.

They seem to work better with a serrated edge.A 2 or 3 inch piece of hacksaw works good.

The BlastMatch is a spring loaded ferro rod and steel all contained in one unit for one handed operation. No need for the hacksaw blade.

I played with my Blastmatch some more today whenever I went outside. The first thing that I did, was to sand the rod a little bit with sandpaper. Whenever I got done sanding, the rod shinned like a new penny and whenever I gave her a try, the sparks flew everywhere.
I guess that's why I had trouble the first time that I tried it.

I guess Im thinking of a metal match then.I like my firesteel,ill google blastmatch so next time Ill know what the hell Im talking about.

I just saw the you tube.Ive never seen one of them.Thats why Im here,to learn.It is a bit bulky IMO,but it worked good.

I agree with you stairman, I like my firesteel. That would be my first choice for starting a fire. I can see where the Blastmatch would be better in a survival situation if you only had one good hand or arm due to an injury. Right now, the Blastmatch would be my second choice.

just make sure you squeeze that sucker, drive it down hard, and you should be seeing a shower of sparks. i've never had an issue, but that's just me.

Since I made my last post about the Blastmatch, I have been playing with mine quite a bit and I have gotten pretty good at starting a fire with it now.Whenever I first tried it, I didn't clean the rod off before I started using it and I wasn't getting very good results. But now, it has become second nature to me. I usually have a fire by at least the third strike.
I can't bad mouth the Blastmatch, it is a good product and it does what it says it will do.

The Blastmatch is a great product in my book once one gets the hang of it I like mine alot and I have several different types of firestarters from fire pistons to bow n drill ,a Strikeforce light my fire steel and many more though the Blastmatch and Strike force are my all time favorites.

I know that this issue has had to come up some time on the history of this forum, but I'd like to know the advantages of a firesteel.

Firesteel = starting thousands of fires

Lighter = starting fires until you run out of fuel (of course, depending on the lighter you can still create a spark to start a fire....and you can carry extra fuel for the lighter) I'm just saying....

Yeah I kind of thought about firesteel being able to make more fires, but I just thought that in a survival kit where it's only going to be used in a real survival situation, you'd want something really reliable and quick like a lighter.

Actually in a "survival" situation I want about four or five methods with me plus the knowledge and skill to improvise in the field.

I'm a long time user of a Blast Match, I've found it to work really well. You do have to squeeze the heck out of it though.

Not much can go wrong with a Blastmatch and if it does its still useable ahhhh the k.i.s.s. method. Also how many lighters do you all know of that you can drench crossing a river wipe off when you get to the other side and build a quick fire to warm up and dry off with?

And if you only have one hand due to an injury??? We are talking survival and all contingencies.

I have watched (and caused) many a tinder pile to scatter until they (and I) got the hang of using a fire steel. Blastmatch is probably no different.

Easy enough to hold a firesteel in your mouth in the event your hand is injured. I doubt you could use the blastmatch in such a manner.

It is different, in that you must vigorously slam down the blastmatch in order to get a shower of sparks. This does not bode well for a carefully laid twig pile. Don't get me wrong, I have a blastmatch, it puts out way more sparks than a firesteel, just letting folks know the disadvantages of it.

If I have the option of holding a fire steel between my teeth and making showers of 5000 degree sparks fractions of an inch away from my lips or using a blastmatch with one hand.......I know which I would choose.

I believe in my synthetic flints,ive tried pistons and all of those other things. fire has 3 legs that it stands upon. if one of those is inadequet, no fire.
