I have an MSA Phalanx that I have to have for work. The thing that I like about it is that you can use 1 or 2 filters depending what you are doing, and when you have just one filter you can pick which side you want it on so that it doesn't interfere with shouldering your weapon.

Glad to see your not covered in ash. This guy sells them for $20. You can't buy dust masks for that cheap. Nato surplus. Says he's got 40 some left. They are slow to ship, it's just him and his wife. But they're good unused masks and 2 filters.

Higgy - do you envision needing it against a nuclear blast, dirty bomb, attack on a nuclear power plant? What do you know about different types of radiation? Answers to these questions (I think Remy asked already) will help you formulate a plan of action.

It depends. The NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) masks will not protect you from everything nuclear. Alpha radiation can be stopped with a dust mask (BTW, I buy very good quality N95 masks 20 at a time for about $20). Beta radiation the mask may help. Gamma and neutron radiation - not so much. No matter what type of radiation you are talking about, time - distance - shielding is an important part of the equation. So if somebody offers you a $20 gas mask and implies that it will protect you from all things nuclear, they are being less than honest. The longest period of time I spent in a mask was about 48 hours.

IMO I would not throw it out. Just make sure that you know what it will protect you from. A lot of people have purchased gas masks for protection over the years. I've seen them mis-used. They do not provide you with oxygen, and they may not filter quite a few things. Know what you have and use it appropriately.

I was participating in an inspection (nuclear weapons certification). During one of the drills that was run (over a 5 day period) we simulated an explosion on one of the missle tubes. I was in the compartment (room) next to the one with the simulated accident operating a piece of radiation monitoring equipment. The inspector that was following me asked me how I would tell the difference between alpha, beta and gamma radiation. I explained the detailed process for the alpha and beta. He said what about gamma? I told him that I would pick up the air sampler that I was operating and throw it against the bulkhead (wall). He looked at me kind of puzzled. I said - if it went through the bulkhead, we had gamma radiation present. He was not amused, but gave the exercise a passing grade with no deficiencies.

Also always remember that gas masks are not meant to be used in an environment that is deficient in Oxygen. I.e. volcanic ash falling from the sky and smothering you, sure it will keep you from inhaling the ash to some extent but it is also going to get clogged with all of that ash. Or if you are in a confined space situation where you have to deal with methane or hydrogen sulfide being the predominant gases, it may filter these out (maybe) but there still may not be a concentration of oxygen high enough to make the inhaled air able to support human life. I guess what I am trying to say is, know what you want to use the mask for and then know the limitations of your mask. The main thing that I use my mask for is against possible OC and if we are going to hit a potential meth lab (and even then if we get in there and find out it is a meth lab we immediately exit and don't come back without SCBA)

I was thinking about getting a Finnish gas mask from Cheaper than Dirt. They're only 10$ and they protect against biological Chemical and some other kind of harards. Plus it looks really really cool.

Just my .02 so take it for what it's worth...
I was in the Army and did plenty of NBC training in MOPP 4 in Georgia in the summer... not fun.
If you are looking for something to put on during a NBC type attack or accident, I'd save your money. Unless you have it with you at all times and have the ability to use accurate detection devices you are SOL. Seriously, by the time you realize something is wrong, it's too late. Modern nerve and blister agents act very quickly and once you are exposed you need proper DECON facilities, atropine and a good doctor! Bio attacks... you won't know until you are infected. Could be anything. Nukes... have some potassium iodide (sp?) to flood your thyroid if you haven't been vaporized by the initial blast.
Now if you have some gear you plan on using to traverse a contaminated area, then that's another story. I wouldn't want to cross an area like that no matter what is going on though.
I could also see having a mask if you expected CS gas or the like as a threat at your homestead.

I have an Israeli surplus mask and filters that came on the market after the '91 war. I was wondering if the filters were biological rated. The question as to biological rating came up after our CERT meeting this week when I was given an N95 mask (looks like a surgical mask). Each mask I have has a canister that came with it, those all have Hebrew markings on them on the seals. I also have a spare canister that has German writing on the seals and different markings on the canister itself.

The question I have is how can I tell from the marking on the canisters what the rating of those canisters are? Is there a URL that one can search for the meanings of the different markings on the canisters and find out what they stand for?

You could possibly use Google language translator to figure out what they say - at least for the German markings (not sure how to type Hebrew alphabet). Maybe find somebody to translate for you.

If they have standard NATO fittings, replace the cartridges with something you are sure about. Have any of the cartridges been exposed to air? If so, they have a shelf life to be aware of.

That's another question I have. the cartridges all have the original seals in place. The seals aren't broken. What would the shelf life of such canisters be good for?

As far as I can tell the masks are standard NATO fittings.

Not sure what the shelf life of the canisters you have would be. It may be best to check with a manufacturer. I guess the big question for yours are - how old are they? One of the issues with mil surplus, regardless of the country of origin is how old it is. I've seen stuff sold that was already well beyond its expiration. I'm sure it varies, but the masks that I have experience with (MK V) - we changed the canisters every couple of years. If you're not sure, and needing the mask is something that is on your priority list (obviously it is, that's why you got them) you may want to get fresh ones so that you are sure of the length of time they will be effective.

The rubber on the masks I have is still very flexible and elastic. The straps and everything functions as new so I suppose that this is still very usable. That leaves the canister as the variable. The masks are designed to take the NATO 40mm canister, replacement canisters are easy to come by as shown in the above link. I think I've answered my own question. All of the links I have looked at refer to shelf life as "unlimited" or "extended" as long as the seals aren't broken. I'm making an assumption that that may be so for CS or something similar however I doubt it would work in more challenging environments. It is a good idea I assume to pick up a set of canisters that are newly manufactured.

The original purpose of picking up the masks was two-fold. The first was for protection against CS/CN (why would I ever be worried about that?)

The second was for use during evacuation of the area in order to get away from the plume of a ground based nuclear strike (terrorist) that would occur upwind from us. I am thinking more along the lines of particulate filtration than anything else. Now before I get flamed, I know that if the plume catches us dead to rights I need to hold up in a shelter of some sort until able to move. I'm thinking more along the lines of keeping dust out of our lungs than anything else.

I don't remember where I got mine at, some place on the internet. If you google Iodine Tablets you will get lots of hits. Mine are in small aspirin bottle type bottles, others are in foil wrapped packages.

I have 2 military issue masks ( 1 ea. for self and wife) I also have MOPP suits for both new in packages (2 a piece) for us and I replace them every year with new ones. Donate old ones to local volenteer fire/rescue.

We have a nerve gas depot about 1.5 hours away. Something X. I don't remember the name off hand. Doesn't really matter. A drop the size of a pin head kills like a bazillion people. So assume they have a leak (they are in the process of destroying it) and this neato cloud of whatever comes drifting over my house. I figure the first notice I'll have is when I wake up at the pearly gates. Maybe some gurgling sensation a split second before. Either way, a bit late for mask or garments.

If I do receive some advance notice then I'm in the Get Out of Dodge Mobile and bookin' for the nearest safe zone. Or hot footin' it, whichever the case may be.

So what good is all this equipment going to be? I'm not trying to be a smart a** even though it comes a bit naturally to me. I just don't see the advantage of wrapping myself in a zoot suit and pulling on a gas mask that might not work anyway.

What is it that folks think they gain by investing in suits and masks?
