Before anybody takes advice from any "expert" it is important to know what the credentials and experience of said expert is. While Doug Copp's self professed resume sounds impressive, a bit more research reveals that there may be some question - not only about his resume, but his ideas as well. Do your research, use multiple resources, have a plan.

When I read the article that you posted, my brain said that this stuff kind of makes sense. I was wondering why I hadn't heard more of this from other sources. I don't know if he is right or wrong, but just wanted to point out that (just like here on the forum) before taking the advice of somebody that you know little or nothing about - do a bit of research.

Having never been in an earthquake nor the vacinity of one, take the following with a grain of salt;

I think the whole duck and cover thing is not meant to deal with building collapse. If an earthquake was expected to tear down buildings, the protocol would be 'get the **** out of the building'. However getting under something would, in the case of lesser and more common earthquakes, prevent bodily harm caused by minor damage and fractures. Such as falling pieces of ceiling (not the whole roof), breaking glass, falling bookshelves, etc. In this case, ducking under a desk to prevent being smacked with the falling florescent fixtures would be my first recommendation. Same with getting in a doorway if pieces of the roof starting breaking up. But if the roof was coming down or the support structures were visibly cracking, I'd high-tail it towards the nearest window for an action movie-styled exit.

What do you think about the advice to get out of - and next to - your car if you're in an earthquake while on a covered roadway?

I've never been in an earthquake, but that bit of advice sounded like it might have some value.

So, um, oly? Take heart, posting that here was a good thing, because people may have read that guy's info elsewhere and just taken it as gospel. So, thanks for starting the thread and thanks everyone else for the input.
