Water Question ?

Hey guy's, I am new here and I already have a question or you. I hope that someone can answer it. Here goes:
You are lost and you come upon a pond of water. You have no way to start a fire to boil it and you have no other way of purifying it either. If you go off to the side of the pond about 5 or 10 feet and dig a hole deep enough for the water to start seeping through, is this water safe to drink? Did the ground filter it enough? I would really appreciate your input. Thanks.

you have at least clothes on i hope. get the water filtered thru a shirt or something to at least get crap out. there is always something around somewhere to collect water with. i couldnt tell you if it were safe or not, too many variables to consider. stagnant,cover,animal tracks all over, etc... but if it was last resort, i would. i mean LAST RESORT.

I would have to disagree with you somewhat sniperfx because the whole thing with the water isn't getting out dirt or rocks it is all of the parasites in it that can really hurt you. Many survival books I have read say you are better off to just not drink the water than drink water you think could be infected with something or cause you problems. I think you would be better off trying to find some berries or fruits that can give you a small amount of water through them.

It depends on how long I think it's going to be before I'm rescued. If I'm very likely to get out in the next 24-72 hours if I can go at full strength, fully hydrated, then I'll probably just take my chances. At least that's my thinking with the critters in the water we have here. The most likely thing I'm going to catch is giardia lamblia, and the incubation period is 72 hours to three weeks. I've had it before for half a summer before I realized what it was and got treatment. It was awful, but far from life threatening and I'd suspect I had it for a month before I even noticed it was anything but a bout of the runs. I thought the treatment was worse than the giardia, but in the end, it cleared up and I went on with life without missing a single day of work (on a trail crew). One rule if you do get giardia is NEVER TRUST A FART!

I carry iodine as one of my 10 essentials along with a waterbottle to mix it in. Last year I needed iodine on three separate occasions and never had any problems. Given the choice between riding in 90F heat for another four hours without water or drinking iodine treated water, the choice was easy. This year I'm planning on using a Steri-pen, but I'll still carry a bottle of iodine tablets as cheap insurance in case my battery dies. Something worth noting is that you should replace your iodine tablets if the bottle has been open more than three months. Air causes them to break down, so once you open the bottle, carry it for the rest of the season, then toss it and replace it.

Unless you live in the tropics, there's very little in the water that will make you sick quickly in a fast flowing stream if you follow it for a 1/4 mile and don't see any obvious contamination (like dead animals in it). While this would never be my first choice, you'll die of dehydration long before you'll get sick from giardia or cryptosporidium.

I'd go 3 days without a drink, even in super-dry, winter weather, before I'd drink that. So, there are a lot of factors here.

- How long have you been without water?
- What is the weather like? Humid summer weather, or dry winter weather?
- How far are you from finding civilization or another person? More than 3 days? Maybe I'd drink the water after 3 days.

I've had the explosive squirts for 4 weeks straight (it might have been crypto). I'm not going to drink "iffy" water again.

In my area, I could walk during that 3 days, and have 100% chance of finding an old can. And have a good chance of finding an old lighter that still sparked. So no, I'm not drinking quite yet.

I had a coworker with one and I was quite impressed. I have an MSR Waterworks w/ ceramic filter, but the Katadyn is smaller and lighter, but also lower volume per minute. If you're filtering just for you and possibly one other person, the Katadyn is the right tool. If you have 3+ people you're making water for, it's going to be a chore so you might want to look at a bigger pump.

No matter what pump you end up buying, there's no cheaper or more compact back up system than tablets. Remember that pumps clog, break and get left by the streamside all the time while a bottle of tablets can sit in your pocket for years without needing any attention at all.

Some thru-hikers don't even filter or purify their water. Scoop and drink. They never get sick (debatable). It's probably somewhat a matter of your internal bacteria and immune system coupled with luck. But depending on the watershed of this "pond", you should be safe.

Plus I see you are in West Virginia. Many areas when hiking in WV you can find water running downhill that is fresh especially in the eastern part of WV. If you are in areas such as WV where there is a lot of flowing water that would be better than a pond.

In a survival situation you'd have to weigh the possibilities.

For a planned outing I'd want to have a filter for the chemicals over boiling or tablets.

It's my understanding that snow and rain can pick up the chemical impurities from plants and factories. Then, you have the chemical and/or pesticide runoff in the streams, rivers, lakes and ponds from yards, farms, plants and factories.

A solar still would be O.K.

Just my opinion.

To drink or not to drink under such circumstances is a calculated risk. Really anytime you purify water in the bush it is a calculated risk, we just do things to mitigate that risk factor to an acceptable level of safety.

In your scenario there are too many factors left undetermined to give you a really good answer. You really are deciding between dehydration and incubation and there are many factors that would point you in one direction or the other. Mac

Locally, at least, I'd be careful of any stream or river as the beaver population has sky-rocketed in the last few years. Every tributary has its share of beaver lodges. Beaver are the main local distributor of giardia.

IT depends, of course, on where you are, but locally it is often not that hard to find a spring - if you know what you are looking for. If you are able to spend time in the outdoors, look around for springs so you know what to look for. If you find standing water on high ground - there are likely springs below it. If you find little trickle streams going into a river - a spring is often the source - though you may have to go a ways.

to watch out for the chemical pollution, however. I'm hoping you'll at least have a Topo map of the area you're in, talk to all the local folks who'd know the area, water sources, etc., before you go anywhere. Knowledge is power. Rainwater is pretty trustworthy, but be wary of what & where it runs off of. Look the area over 1st, before drinking. Have animals been drinking out of it, or using it for a latrine? Do you know of any industrial sites that could have pollutants running into it? Use all of your senses, eyes, ears, nose, your brain, & of course, your mouth.:cool:

what do you mean you have no way of starting a fire? Even if you were naked in the woods, you could still, with the proper skills start a fire. I mean what are you wearing? do you have a knife? shoelaces? glasses? I could go on and on. The thing here is to make the best use of whatever you have with you. Now to directly answer your question as to wether you can drink that water.....you can but it is still a crap shoot as to wether or not you will injest some nasties. That is why filters and iodine tabs are big business.

I'm never without the ability to start a fire, but I'm occasionally without a container that can withstand heating to the boiling point. I've heard you can use aluminum foil, but I've never tried it. My experience with aluminum near fire is that it gets soft and melts. While I can imagine heating water in a soda can because it's thicker and has more structure to it, aluminum foil seems like a stretch.

Has anyone ever boiled water in aluminum foil successfully?

Are there any alternative containers that take up minimal space but can take the heat? (yes, I saw the Survivorman where Les tried to use his Camelbak bladder and I wouldn't call that a success)

Any tricks that I'm missing?

Sarky is correct "Even if you were naked in the woods, you could still, with the proper skills start a fire". But odds are you wouldn't be naked. You could start a fire, heat small rocks, use your boots, hat or make a simple wood bowl, use a large shell (in some areas) etc, and boil water. I think you need to practice your fire making skills.

Digging near a pond does filter out larger gunk and nastiness you don't want to drink straight from any pool of still water, but not the microbic parasites that can still make you sick. Like others said, you have to weigh the chance of dehydration against the risk involved. But if you're dying of thirst, drink anything you can find. Try to find the clearest, coldest, running water as a rule though (assuming you have no other gear or skills to purify water as described in the opening post here).
You can collect clean water varied other ways (condensation off plants, etc), but often not enough to keep you alive for very long in hot/humid conditions.


As for the question about boiling water in foil, try the rotating hot rocks method. And move the hot rocks around in the cup/bowl some using a clean stick or whatever.

You can also boil water in any plastic water bottle, and I find way too many of those in the wild (because some people are littering pigs).

i thas been pointed out before that it can take up to two weeks for giardia to make you sick,soooo if i was in dire need of water i would drink it and deal with the problems down the road; provived i would be back in civilization by that time, if not maybe the search for better water would be ongoing
also the only thing i worry about is chemicals in the water, anything else i will filter and boil and be safe to drink, while digging a hole will help filter it, it will not help with the nasties

Yeah and also after some research, what I said about West Virginia streams, I asked a guy and looked more stuff up and I guess the coal companies have been polluting the streams pretty heavily with chemicals worse than a parasites. So I guess drink at your own risk ha.

That's true (melting a hole) if you don't fill the bottle to the brim. If you fill it "completely" you can let the flames lick the heck out of a plastic bottle and not burn a hole in it. It "may" turn black in spots doing so if you have flames steadily on it, and if that happens the water will taste a little worse. But you can bet there won't be any living parasites in it.

The same advice from Ziggy here about keeping plastic out of the flames can be used for the foil container as well. If your fire is mostly hot coals and not a bunch of wild flames, you can put a flat rock in the coals and put the foil container on top of it. But as noted in another post, flames can and will burn foil.

I want to thank everyone for their input and post's on the water question that I asked yesterday. All points were well taken. So much that I ordered myself a Katadyn Pocket Pro Water Filter last night.
I plan on getting on with my life this coming Spring, by doing some camping and Trout fishing up in the mountains of West Virginia. Over the past few years, I have found out the hard way what a germ can do to a person. I am a germaphobic anymore, so yes I will filter my water before drinking it or making coffee with it. I will probably even bring it to a boil before using it also.

In the mountains of eastern West Virginia, there are plenty of fresh water streams that flow to the valley floors. They used to be good sources of fresh water that you could drink straight from the stream. Now, all of the coal companies and the chemical companies from Charleston have done a bang up job of polluting them.
The main place that I want to go camping at and do some Trout fishing has one of those streams running right next to the campground. The campground is primitive camping only and doesn't have water available. I plan on filtering water from the stream and then bring to a boil just to be safe.
The Katadyn filter that I got is good for 13,000 gallons of water before you have to change the filter.
