Or should it be "Things Every Rabbit-Choker Knows"?
When I used to guide, I was always surprised to find people from out of the area didn't know things I assumed to be common knowledge - and would sometimes even argue with me over it.
What are some things that you feel are common knowledge in your area, things which might affect your survival?
I've chosen three items which may or may not be true where you live. Please mention where you live.
For NE Minnesota:
Prevailing winds are out of the west.
All rivers and streams go to Lake Superior (until you hit the height of land)
Lake water is safer to drink than river water. Spring water is safest of all.

I'll think of some more, but...here is one that gets tourist all the time in this area -the rivers flow North out of Yellowstone Park. The Yellowstone, The Madison, The Gallatin, The Boulder, The Jefferson, The Stillwater all flow North and eventually run into the Missouri.
Many people think that there are only one or two rivers in the World that flow North. They often want to argue with me about which way we are going. And, it confuses the heck out of people on the phone who are looking at maps. I'll talk about going up to Gardiner, and they'll say...well Gardiner is south of Livingston. And I'll say yeah- upriver. Then they'll argue about which direction they want to float.
For some reason many people think that the Youghiogheny River in PA, MD, WV is the only North flowing river in the USA. I get in disagreements over this regularly with tourist from that area

Misqeetoes( i think i spelled it wrong:)) breed in moving water here, and yes they are misqeetoes.

I've heard that rumor from a dog owner I know.;)
The Red River flows north (nope not the one in Texas, go back and consult your geography texts)
The MacKenzie River flows north, the Nelson River flows north....I do believe the mighty Columbia flows north then turns around and flows south again...

THE FACTS: Unless the land it totally flat, rivers of water run downhill. The vast percentage of rivers on the planet flow in a southerly direction because the source (usually in the mountains) is to the north of the mouth.
If the source of a river is at a higher elevation than the mouth, that river will run from the source to the mouth. However, if that (higher) source is to the south of the mouth, that river will then flow to the north (downhill).

This would be the short list. Every river in NE Minnesota, north of the Laurentian Divide and west of the height of land, runs north. Kind of odd to be paddling upstream, do a short portage and be paddling downstream.

The saskatchewan river flows north. generally. It flows from BC somewhere to hudson bay i believe.
I have an internet friend who lives out there - in New Brunswick. He has some pretty interesting stories about paddling in the Bay of Fundy.
Sounds like somewhere you don't want to paddle without local knowledge.

Most Creeks lead to the Embarrass River, which leads to the Wabash, which leads to the Ohio, which leads to the Mississippi.
Prevailing winds from southwest.
Sunflowers always face east.
etc.
Most people I know only know where Wal-Mart is.:eek:

FL is an equal opportunity zoo. Wouldn't be shocked to stumble across anything that people have smuggled or bought for pets and let loose to breed when they ate a kid, or worse one of their dogs.:D

Alaska:
In the winter clear blue sun shinny skies means its really cold outside.
We have two sizes of mosquitoes:
The one's that are so small they can fly through the little square holes in a screen door.
The one's that are so big they walk up on the porch and rip the door off the hinges.
In this har part of the country;
1. If you are walking through the woods and you come upon a still. No free drinks, walk back out the way you came, in the same footprints.
2. If you are walking through the woods and you come upon a field of pot. NO samples, walk back out the way you came, in the same footprints.

You got it right, but remember you are being watched(probably) and the mantraps are sprouting up everywhere and pot is now being scattered enough and fields made hard to see from the air. I know a few growers and they can make some nasty traps. It's the biggest cash crop from VA South in this range.
Don't think everyone got the same footprints.;)

Smack in the middle of the Mohave Desert.
1. Travel at night if you are lost in the summer.
2. Stay covered from head to toe during the day. Sunburned=dehydration, and the sweat you dump into your clothes will act as air conditioning with a breeze.
3. Contrary to popular belief, it does NOT cool off at night to where you could get hypothermia here. In fact, breaking down into the high 80's for a low is considered a cool morning in July. Last summer (late July) I got up to let the dog outside at 3 a.m. and it was still 105 degrees.
4. Monsoon season begins July 15th and ends September 15th. The storms generally blow in from the east/northeast and can produce 75+ MPH winds, and 2-4 inches of rain in an hour. If you see these storms approaching, find some "middle ground" and hunker down.
Stay out of the low lying areas, as they will flood quickly, and stay off the top of the hills as these storms produce wicked lightening.
I will update if I think of any more...I am tired right now.

Smack in the middle of the Mohave Desert.
In the fall and winter Temp swings of up to 40 degrees is not uncommon 65F in the day, 30 F at night.
I have been in the S. NV desert when it has been 115 F in the day and 112 at night and stayed that way for several days. I have been there when is mid 60's in the daytime and would freeze water at night.
I traveled the southern NV desert from the Great Basin to Southern Calif from Tonoph to Palm Springs Calif for 30 years on foot, motorcycles, 4 X4 jeeps and trucks
The Canadian River Valley is NOT in Canada...................
Do not go into the west side projects unarmed and thinking because you are a hippie democrat person you will be ok as you will die
If you are watching a tornado and it isnt moving, its coming straight at you.
If you here reports of a toad strangler coming your way, it will be a bad rain.
If the tornado sirens go off, do NOT attend the block party........

In Northern Ny there are two seasons, winter and highway construction. If you don't like the weather wait a few minutes... it will change. If you don't like snow, move to Florida. If you dont like mosquitos you are S.O.L. Blackflies (punkies) are worse than mosquitos, and further more... DEET is salad dressing to both species!!! Oh, and the bumble bees are large enough to fly away with a huskie...
Toad Strangler (LOL) haven't heard that in a while.

i think local info is always the best, my former lifestyle puts me at a dissadvantage travelling the way i have never got to know one place very intimatley i am trying to change that now but sometimes its hard to learn something from a 19 year old snot nosed bubblehead who has spent 19 years roaming these lakes and woods

It's a thing that I have always heard, but never understood. Even Les Stroud brought it up on a Survivorman episode, and I sat here watching it saying "huh?"

I should of clarified in my original post that the Summer temperatures never cool off.
Yesterday it was 70 degrees at 3 p.m., and it is currently 42. So during the winter it will warm into the 60's-70's, and then cool off into the 30's and 40's at night.
However I don't consider 60's and 70's to be sweltering heat.

From Port Huron Michigan. The river is to the east, after that comes the canadians. If the news says a lot of snow is coming take their word for it. In a snowstorm green means look both ways then go.

Here in this area:
The water in lakes, rivers, streams, creeks, etc. isn't safe to drink without treatment. Don't do it.
If there's a 30% chance of rain, it will. Unless it's summer.
Yes, coyotes do in fact like to run through WalMart parking lots.
Squirrels are edible, but don't tell anyone here. That's why Mcdonalds' exist.
Having 30+ deer in a square acre is not necessarily a good thing.
Guns tend to scare old people into calling 911, even if it's a new pellet rifle and you're walking to your friend's house to show it to him.
Cops don't know what a blowgun really is.
Don't carry your concealed weapon with max. magazine capacity plus another round in the chamber; the police will lose that 'extra' round, no matter how shiny or expensive it was, or how many times it happens.
If you fall asleep against a tree, move slowly when you wake up, you don't want to scare George the Raccoon...

Sorry flanders, nope. It flows west to east and doesn't vary much in it's north-south line. Starts somewhere in BC and dumps into Lake Winnipeg at Grand Rapids. There are two branches of it flowing as far as Saskatchewan and then it joins into one.
Here in the Netherlands:
1. The northern part of our country is warmer than the southern part in the winter, because the wind usually crosses the North Sea and Waddenzee (also a sea :p) The water can maintain it's warmth longer than the land. So the wind is warmed up when it reaches us.
2. Because seawater is harder to warm than land, we have cooler summers than the southern part of the Netherlands :p
3. River water isn't really safe to drink anywhere anymore :( I remember my father told me he could drink river water without a problem.
