I was making sparks to beat the band, but the Witches Hair would not go!

Was about to write off the Magic Striker as an emergency fire starter when I decided to try shavings of Magic Ignitor fatwood..

This DID go up, and if I'd spent the time getting a proper kindling tee-pee set up I would have been off to the races..

Still, I think I'm going to put a Bic lighter in a ziploc bag and be done with it.. LOL

I thought the Witches Hair would have made great spark-catcher..

What gives?

I'm not familiar with witches hair. If you're not using natural tinder from your surroundings and you want instant flame - cotton (real not synthetic) ball, dryer lint, vaseline soaked cotton balls, Wetfire Tinder shavings, etc. If you want to catch a spark without instant flame - char cloth.

Anyhoo, I always thought it'd make great stuff to catch light (it goes great when you really get a spark going)..

It was bone dry.. It SHOULD have worked.. :(

But yeah, I guess I'm better off using made up stuff like fuel/fat soaked rope, etc. for getting a fire going from a spark...

Was the witches hair old and dead or live? If it was live perhaps it was simply too wet to catch the spark. Tinder, especially tinder being used with a spark, needs to be pretty dry. If there is already a flame from a match or something then perhaps it would work, but if you're trying to ignite tinder from a spark, it does have to be dry, at least I think it would.

Oh, it had to have been dead..

I got it off cut-up fire logs inside a cabin (they were dry, of course)..

It was about a handful I was trying to work with..

I wonder if dry grass would work...

I'll have to try that, come summer..

Another thing I could try would be sawdust from a freshly cut down tree..

But like I say, for an emergency kit I think I'm going to stick with the surer sure things, like waterproof matches, lighters, etc.. :)

Something that is parasitic and growing on a host may be alive while the host is dead. It may still find enough nutrients and moisture to support life and growth. In my line of work many wood decay fungi thrive on lumber, which is certainly not alive. The survive on the lignin (carbohydrates) in the wood as long as the moisture content is high enough (as low as 15% in some cases).

Dry grasses and dried pine needles wrok very well. Make a tinder ball with them and then crush some. The powdery crushed mixture along with your tinder bundle will burn very well with the addition of a spark or two.

Is that the same as Old Man's Beard? I'm not familiar with semantics, I just grab what's dry. Your problem seems to be either A) it wasn't completely dry or B) you didn't get small enough fibers to catch the sparks. I agree that a Bic lighter is probably better for fast fire in a variety of situations, I find they are utterly useless when wet.

Yeah, I'll double bag it in ziplocs.. Best I can do..

If it's raining heavily, I'll use something else, like water-proof matches..

I'll try to get a denser patch of the stuff together and try that before I give up on them as a spark fire starter..

Your flint & steel "Magic Striker" should work just fine. Practice with it a few times under ideal conditions first. In fact, go out to your dryer right now and grab a some lint. Make a nice loose ball with it. Hit it with a spark from the Magic Striker. Do this in an area where it is safe to have an instant flame. Go ahead - try it.

Oh, the striker worked fine..

Like I say, I was making plenty of good, white-hot sparks, and I got a flame from the fatwood shavings..

It's just the "Old Man's Beard" that wouldn't light for me..

And if it's this tough to get a flame what would seem to be a perfectly fine tinder source, maybe the striker isn't such a good go-to emergency firestarter, is my point..

Unless I have the fatwood with me, or some other fuel-soaked material..

Dougz - you don't need a fuel soaked tinder. There are many options, some of which I listed above. The flint and steel will work when wet, cold, hot. It is probably your most reliable fire starting source - just takes a little practice. Part of that practice will be finding out what tinders work for you and which ones don't.

Try it and see. Then play around with it a little. Put a small amount in one of the voids of a cardboard egg carton, melt a little parafin or candle wax in it (just enough to hold it together). Burns for more than 5 minutes depending on its size.

not sure what the witches hair thing is but fire steel strikers will work like a charm every time if you know what your doing and what your trying to light on fire. I have a fire pit in the back yard and about two months ago I made the decision that I would never use lighters again. I have not had trouble starting a fire except one night when I tried to do it in the pouring rain... thats a hard one.

as long as you have some dry materials, you should be fine.

I have totally done away with matches and lighters in my kit. All I carry now is a (actually 3) flint and steel. I do however carry 2 different tinders, the first is cottonballs smothered in vasoline (this will light and stay lit even in a down pour) the second is OB brand tampoons (you can't compress cotton that compact). I use these when the weather is dry, I cut it into thirds and fluff up one third, hit it with a spark and FIRE. Give it a try. I keep the OBs in a zip lock bag to keep them dry.

Never had much luck with that stuff. Char cloth into grass or charred birch fungus into grass is what works consistently for me. There is a type of (black) birch fungus which doesn't need to be charred, but it is hard to find.

Now's here's a great example why I like this forum so far. Ideas....

I carry an MSR stove with me when hiking, so I may brew a spot of tea when I need to. But it's a pain to light the thing at times with a match because you have to get a bit close with the match and many times when starting one up its windy and the wind blows out the match. How much easier would it be to simply cast a shower of sparks onto the firebowl of the stove! I will try this out next time. :D Thanks everyone!

P.S. Actually, I got impatient. So I tried it out on the back porch. Worked like a charm. Used the back of the knife for striking the firestick and after a few strokes (while I got my technique down) the stove started just fine. I even made a video but it's pretty large sop I doubt I'll be able to upload it. One thing though, I found that the best place to actually throw the sparks was from the side opposite of the fuel tank and control. It was just that I had clearer access to the fuel bowl there.

A search on firestarting is what led me to this site. I found the thread on making char cloth, made some and tried it. I was impressed at how well it worked. I will be carrying char cloth with me from now on.
I am going to try making a fire piston next.

With a ferro rod you have to test any and all natural materials you come across. They really are a great way to make fire but it does take some practice and a knowledge base to make them work consistently. The main advantage to the ferro rod is that they work in all conditions at all elevations and only go bad if you let them corrode so keep it coated with clear nail polish when not in use.

Cotton treated with Vaseline will give you instant flame, there is no excuse for not carrying a small supply of it stashed in your kit somewhere, it is cheap and easy to make and it does not degrade over time. I have used pj cotton ten years after treating it and it worked like on day one.

With the natural tinder you need to divide them into primary and secondary tinder. Primary tinder will produce flame from a spark. Secondary tinder burns easily but won't take a spark. Often plant wool like cat tail fluff will burst into flame quickly but only burn for a few seconds. Such tinder needs to be used with a secondary tinder to produce longer lasting flame.

Plant wool when compacted tightly will extend a coal, as when blowing up a tinder ball with char cloth. Place the char cloth in a wad of plant wool and then wrap that with your secondary tinder such as shredded bark or dry grasses.

I have found that lichens are very susceptible to moisture or humidity. They work great when they are bone dry as a secondary tinder but often won't take a spark unless they are bone dry and slightly pulverized.

Often a secondary tinder such as birch bark will take a spark if it is shredded very fine. Scrape it with the blade of the knife to raise up a pile of woolly fibers. With other bark rub it in a tight wad in your hands until the individual fibers separate.

Another thing is technique with the ferro rod. Hold the scraper still and pull back on the rod. This aids in not upsetting the tinder pile by striking downwards with the scraper. Put the tip of the ferro rod right down on top of the primary tinder. As the rod is scraped it strips off tiny slivers of metal that are ignited by the friction of being forced off the rod. They then begin to burn like little meteors. The idea is to cause them to land in the tinder and burn in place rather than flame out on their way down towards it. A spark that is almost out bouncing off the tinder won't help much, a spark that is just beginning to burn and gets trapped in it will light it on fire. It also helps to scrape slower with greater pressure, this will bite deeper into the rod and throw off larger pieces into the tinder that will burn in place longer.

Practice the ferro rod, it is a great piece of kit and isn't dependent on keeping a supply of fat wood or PJ cotton with it to make it work. As to the Bic, I carry a ferro rod in my kit but I also have a BIG YELLOW BIC and a small yellow bic in my kit at all times too. The Bic is a wonderful thing. The problem with a bic is that they go down in extreme cold, soaking wet, and high wind, the three times you need them most. Mac

Having the lighter and matches is a good idea IMO. In the little fire kits I put together I always have at least 4 methods of starting fire and multiple tinder sources. If I find some natural flint and tinder to make a fire, fine. But if not, I will still have fire.

I have both a Gerber "Strike Force" and a magnesiun stick. However the vast majority of the time I use the Bic lighter in my pocket. The one thing I NEVER go to the woods without is my "K&M Matchcase". Always keeps my matches dry and has a decent compass on it.
