Reloading Ammunition

I have often wondered about the attraction that reloading ammunition has for people. I used to think that having your own reloading tools could make you more self-sufficient... but the more I hear about it, the more it sounds like the materials you need (such as primers) are no less easy to come by than store-bought ammunition.

So perhaps you reloaders out there can explain it to me. Is it just a fun hobby? Is it a source of cheaper ammo? Is it the chance to make customized rounds?

In one of my former lives I never loaded a single round of ammunition. Any time I was running low I'd go to my armorer and he would give me fresh new box's of Federal Gold Medal Match 168 gr. hollow point boat tails. The look, smell and feel of them was intoxicating.:D

Now days I do reload. For me it is relaxing. It also gives me a good feeling when I pull the trigger on whatever I'm hunting and take that animal with a round that I put together with TLC. (tender loving care):)

I reload, but only for calibers that I use for hunting larger game like deer, elk and bear. I do this because I like to find the best combination of bullet and powder that fits the gun, to get better accuracy.

The deal with reloading is this, you can buy thousands of primers and bullets as well as ios of pounds of powder and if stored properly will be viable for ten or twenty years. The brass is the single most expensive component but you should be able to reload the brass 10 or more times provided you don't push the pressure limits (Hot Load) on your reloaded ammo. Another way to look at it is the space needed to house the components for 10,000 reloads not including the 1,000 rounds you have loaded (you will be using this brass to load up the other components you have) will be abut the same as three or four thousand rounds of loaded ammo. And on those dark quiet nights when you have nothing else to do you can load up some ammo. If you can get once fired brass in .223, 9mm, .45, and .308 you will save a great deal over what it costs to buy newly manufactured ammo. The war on terror is taking it's toll on the price of these calibers. You also have choices as to single stage reloading press or a progressive press.

I reload for all my rifles, but then I shoot a muzzleloader.LOL...........

I wanted to start for my 308, but I don't ever shoot it so that idea went out the window. I'm arse backwards as when I tote a rifle in the woods, no matter what kind of hunt, it's a muzzleloader. And that's if I bring the rifle, nowdays I just pick up the bow.

I do have a 22 revolver, but to reload for a 22 is not really worth it. Well, until ammo goes up that extra 500% as projected.

Percussion caps prices are on the rise as are blackpowder. Use to be able to get a pound for 18 bucks, will be stopping Tues. to get another pound. Probably going to be up in the 30 now.

Two weeks ago I was able to reload 500 rounds of .38 special JHP on my friends Dillon for about $4.50 a box. A similar load in the stores is running about $17.50 a box. Not bad for about 2.5 hours of work.

if you have a gun but don't plan to shoot much then reloading doesn't make alot of sense. If you do alot of shooting then it is the only way to go. My friend shoots competition and runs through 3 - 5 thousand rounds of .38 special a year. he also shoots .45 in competition so you can see the savings really do add up. Mac

YUP. I have been reloading for over 35 years, which includes casting my own bullets for handguns and rifles.

FWIW most actual "Snipers" use factory produced ammo.

Guess I need to stop reloading as I don't fit into either of these categories

Always loaded my own for the 303. And with its scope I can tag a man size target at 350 yards no problem. Now 400 yards forget it.

I also reloaded a ton of bevel base wad cutters for pistol revolver practice.

and beside's, reloading is a single stage thought process that you have to focus on. :D Hope that helps some

I'm new here,so howdy!!Reload for all my rifles and pistols,have been packrating for some time.Made brass 410 shotgun shells out of .303 British brass,make buckshot loads out of splitshot and crimp them on 80# monofiliment fishing line for a tight patern that will really do a job on bigger critters,they work well and can be reloaded till hell freezes over.Probaly got all I'll need in supply's sealed in ammo cans before the prices started up 5 years ago.

I second that, I get most of my brass from our shooting club, and there is no shortage of pot holes in Michigan, especially right now. That reminds me, I need to go and look for some lead.

Disclaimer: I no longer reload because I don't shoot that much anymore, but years ago I did because I was a high power rifle competitor. This is why I reloaded...

I originally started reloading when I was active in the DCM (Director of Civilian Marksmanship) program at my old F&G club. We were able to sign out M1 rifles for each shooting season and we were issued standard ball ammo for use in matches. However, this standard M2 ammo didn't have the stuff needed at 600 yards which was the 4th stage in the NMC (National Match Course) we shot. So I started reloading for the 600 yard stage and the scores went up!

Eventually I started using an AR15 for the matches. Again, standard ball ammo was OK at the 200/300 stages but really didn't quite make it at 600 yards.

A rifle is like a tuning fork, each one has its own perfect frequency that it performs best at. I tried an experiment. I had my favorite bullet head, primer and powder, the question in my mind was what load should I use. I took about 20 small cloth bags and labeled them with letters. Then I mixed them all up in a pile. I started loading batches of 10 rounds each, varying only the powder charge with each batch. I'd finish a batch, grab a random bag from the pile and put the rounds in it, recording the reload data with the letter on the bag.

After all the bags were filled, I waited a week or two (so I'd really forget any association of a given charge with a given bag) and then I went to the range with a bunch of blank targets and all my "lots". I left my chart of which batch contained which charge home. Targets were set at 100 yards and each lot was fired into a clean target which were then marked with the letter from the bag the rounds came from. Before I fired a given lot I fired two standard ball rounds in the rifle to act as fouling shots. So for each lot there was 12 rounds fired, 2 standard ball rounds then my ten reloaded rounds.

The rifle was completely cleaned between each batch. I mean it was cleaned to the point where the patches didn't come out with the copper bluegreen on them between lots fired.

It was VERY telling. The lots were all over the place, in some cases a foot wide, in other cases 1" wide. When I got home and matched up the targets and the letters of the batches fired with the records of what the loads were in each batch the result was a classic upside down bell curve. :-) Excellent!

There was a catch however. I came to the .223 world from the 30'06/.308 world. All the advice I'd received was from that world and that advice said that I didn't have to worry about any more variation in my load than 1/2 grain. But the bell curve I was looking at suggested otherwise.

I tried the entire experiment all over again, this time focusing on the loading area of the tightest groups and I varied my loads by .1 grain (that's right, 1/10th of a grain).

I took my groups, with the best loading, from a 1" group at 100 yards (from the initial test of varying .5 grain) to a group of 8 rounds the size of the finger nail on my pinky with 2 flyers. OMG! .5 minute of arc accuracy. NICE!

I would say that maybe .5 grain variation in loads for 30'06 is not that much percentage wise, but .5 grain is a heck of a lot more of a variation percentage wise in a .223 round (5.56mm for those in the military). I've still got the targets to prove the fact.

For me, reloading gained me 1) money because it was cheaper and 2) many extra points in a match.

BTW, If you are considering reloading and are thinking of getting a progressive press, might I suggest you look into Dillon presses? They really stand behind their product.

As long as Dillon makes a shell holder to fit the 7mm Mag for the 650 it will reload it. I know they make a shell holder for the 7mm Mag for their 550RL. As far as the reloading dies the 550 and 650 take standard dies, pick from your favorite die manufacturer.
