Is there any one here that is involved BSA orginization ? I have become increasingly dissapointed with it. They are forgeting their roots and becomeing to politically correct. I looked through the scout book for survival information and was disgusted. About half of that book was about things other than the outdoors. Which arn't bad things telling them to stay away from drugs ect ect but come on I have one of the books from the 1930's that is packed with usefull information and it puts the new one to shame. I was just wondering if anyone noticed or felt the same.

I agree totally. I was a Scout, oh 17 years ago, and it was a joke back then too. We went on 1 campout over a period of 1 year. And that was only an overnighter. It was more for the adults than us, the kids. They taught us nothing usefull at all.

ARE you kidding? Didn't you read my Blog: "The Way of the Scout"? Or any of the hundred or so posts I've posted? Yes we have Scouters on here like Rick, pgvoutdoors, & so on. I've always said that the old Scout manuals are the best! But remember this, it's the leaders that make the Troop, not the other way around!! (so saying, the wise old sen-survival master adjusts his robes and goes looking for a Twinkie)

I agree the leaders make the troop.I would make a good scoutmaster with alot to share, but most of the boys could care or less about survival. When I was a scout in the early 70's we had one leader who stood out among all the others. He was a Marine who wore a baret with a patch that read jungle expert, and he was too.He was a little tough on the boys, most of which were way too soft anyway but he made our troop what it was in the woods. He new nothing of such badges as citizenship but in the bush he was the real deal.Sadly when his son dropped out so did he,I quit shortly afterwards only making it to Star Scout. We did camp alot and hiked to many of the sites carrying everything we needed and singing marine songs we would repeat after Mr Mcgowans lead.At our local Christmas parade this year I parked beside a bunch of scouts getting ready to march and they acted more like a bunch of brownies to me.Excessive tv watching, nintendo,my space and the telephone consumes most of todays youths freetime.IMO kids today, with some exceptions are as soft as they have ever been in history.

The Scouts have evolved a lot since their start (100th anniversary coming up). While we all enjoy being in the wilderness and doing those sort of things....what about the Scout Troop in New York City? While it would be nice to do more camping and outdoor activities, it may not always be practical. Hopefully the troops are sticking to the principals that IMO helped to shape young boys into responsible citizens.

They won't even teach some of the skills like stalking animals. But its not all their fault most of the kids today are terrible no discipline or respect. I think they need to change a lot of their policys one of which that I have a big problem with is the knife rules.

Actually I have and even in my whole district my troop is still one of the best if not thee best. Not that my troop dosn't have a lot of problems because it dose and some of them being with the leaders. They put even more restrictions on the knifes now they can't have any knifes with serrated blades on top of it having to be a folding lock blade with the blade no longer than the width of the palm of your hand.

I was in a scout troup in the 1960s. Our troop leader, a high school teacher, knew considerably less about the outdoors than most of the kids in the troop (he was from Minneapolis - we all grew up in the woods). I think the troop lasted about two years.

On the other hand, my younger brother was in an Explorer troop which did things like paddle the length of the Mississippi River and paddle from Lake Superior to the Arctic Circle. My brother and another member slept in a tipi every night for one year.

I was involved in an explorer outpost myself; it was really cool. It's a great alternative to a lame BSA Troop. If push comes to shove screw the formalities & make your own group teaching the "old ways".

When I was a scout you earned a card called the toten chip. Each time you were observed doing something wrong with a knife they would cut of a corner.Once all corners were gone you could only have a butter knife.I saw one boy eating with his knife and the leader cut off two corners on that one. With the card there were no restrictions on Knife size or type.

For the majority of work done with a knife. A blade no longer then the width of your palm is way more useful then anything bigger or smaller. If you don't believe that then you don't use a knife enough to have an opinion.

We are living in a time when the majority of our youth live in towns and cities. It is more relevant to teach them to survive in those environments. You don't need a sharp 10" bladed knife for that. You need a sharp mind.

hermitman

Mabey you don't need a blade longer than with width of your palm but I haven't ever found a knife with a blade that long good for things like chopping and other things that you might have to do if in the woods for an extended period of time.

Yes, I'm coming up on my 15th year as a BSA adult leader. I'm a Assistant Scoutmaster, Merit Badge Instructor, and a LOST (leaders outdoor skills training) instructor for my district.

There's a lot to talk about concerning Scouting policies, but to try to stay on the topic of their handbook it has changed dramatically over the years. This has occurred for two major reasons;

First, liability. The ability to win practically any frivolous law suit in this country has forced the BSA to remove much of the woodskills and survival material from their handbook. The courts see this as "unsupervised" instruction. A boy may read about a skill, go out and try it, and execute it improperly and get hurt. Then the family goes after the BSA.

Second, the BSA has expanded their curriculum to incorporate a broader range of activities. Lets face it, most of the boys of today have little interest in the outdoors. That's not to say that most of the ones that join the BSA are not for camping and outdoor activities, they are! The problem is that for any organization to survive they must have a steady flow of new members. From 1910 through the 1950's Scouting was the thing to do for most boys in this country, then a steady decline began. Today the BSA struggles to stay alive. They are trying to accommodate the new interests of today's boys.

The handbook now reflects the most basic foundation of Scouting, a library of supplemental books have been written to be used to personally instruct the boys and leaders on everything you can imagine. With this system the Scouts learn from instruction from a Scoutmaster, Merit Badge councilor, or a special program. This ads supervision to the written material. Now, most of us remembers learning this way when we were Scouts, and that's true. But, by taking much of the material out of the handbook the courts deem we are not just giving irresponsible ideas to the boys.

The BSA has a "Field Manual", that the boys can purchase, that is focused on many of the woodskills and survival skills that were removed from the Handbook. Though it's mostly used by the Venture Crews of the BSA. These crews focus on high adventure outings and training.

If you go to the online Scout shop and look-up literature you'll see a huge selection of training manuals. Once your on the literature page look to the left column of topics.
http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/default.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&C2=BOOKS_LIT&C3=BOYSCOUTS&C4=&LV=3

As many of you have mentioned, a Troop is only as good as the adults that get involved in Scouting. PS. You don't have to have a boy in Scouting to participate.

As for the BSA knife policy, you can read it for yourself.

http://scoutingaround.com/boy-scouts/34-camping/77-knife-guidelines

Just a side note, in "Boys Life", the BSA's official boys magazine, the question was asked a few months ago, what would be the best hunting knife? The answer was, a small sheath knife for hunting and camping! After reading the BSA's official policy on sheath knives (above link) look at the questions asked after the recommendation in the link below. It has to be one of the most misunderstood policies the BSA has.

Some of my fondest memories are from Scouting. I have been involved at some level ever since 1963. Back in the 60s-70s my Dad was one of our troop's leaders and most of the other boy's fathers were also very involved. We did all kinds of things together from hiking, camping, canoeing, hunting, biking, backpacking, high adventure, jamborees, summer camp, etc... Since most of the scouts & their dads were involved we did several things that were not "official" scouting activities such as the hunting trips. Our troop did atleast one weekend camping trip per month & 10 day scout camp each summer.

Over the years I've helped as a volunteer as a Merit Badge Counselor, Assistent Cubmaster, Assistent Scoutmaster, Assistent District Commissioner, District NESA Chairman, Member at Large, etc. One of my favorite experiences as an adult scouter was doing the 10 day Woodbadge Program (it brought back several memories of my earlier boy scouting days).

I also went up through the program with my son (Cub Scouts through Boy Scouts). It is a good program if you follow the "Patrol Method" which teaches the boys how to develop personal & team skills. My son's troop also did atleast on weekend camping trip per month & a 10 day scout camp each summer.

I made Eagle back in 1970, my son made Eagle in 1999.

Like everything in our society, there is a push to water things down, be politically correct & to be all inclusive. It really is too bad because the core program is really good. With the right leaders (dads) & the right mix of boys it can still be a great program for boys.

If you and your boy aren't happy with your program, get involved & change it or move to another troop or get a group of fathers together and form your own troop. It is & can be a great program.

OK, nope not anymore..............10 years with the council and as a regional director for a district, none paid................One day they sent a request for volunteers to be instructors for the scout badges..............Rappelling, firearms,
and physical training..................I volunteered as I was state police certified in emergency rappelling, firearms instructor and self defense instructor for the state...................The Council rejected MY qualifications and required I attend on of their one day seminars ar $50 bucks each so I could "properly Teach" those subjects.

I also watched as the demand for fund raisers transcended the boys needs and watch as the upper paid executives raked in big bucks. I quit in abject disgust when the District director touched $150,00 in salary and received a new house and the district paid for his kids "private school" tuition.........

The movement is doomed I am afraid.

They won't even teach some of the skills like stalking animals. But its not all their fault most of the kids today are terrible no discipline or respect. I think they need to change a lot of their policys one of which that I have a big problem with is the knife rules.I was a scout maybe 10 years back, and we never learned anything like that. Then again, we were a predominantly suburban troop, and I guess they figured we'd never use the knowledge so they focused more on crafts and games.

We did go camping a lot, although sometimes it was to gardens rather than the woods (understandable, as we really are a developed area and we had to travel 5+ hours to find any decent camps).

But they still managed to teach us decent firecraft and ax use, and we did some dayhikes, and we camped out plenty, and they taught us a good bit about knives and first aid, and we did archery, and of course there was the snipe hunting, but it was mostly an amateur campout/party most of the time.

Actual survival skills, though, were minimal. I think they reserved that primarily for people aiming at Eagle Scout, and I never quite got that far (heart or star, I forget which). I know we had an ES requirement of having to spend a full night alone in the woods with no proper gear, make a lean-to shelter, build a fire, etc, so survival skills were there; they were just fairly basic and only for the most advanced.

Oh, and I have a confession to make: I should have a chip taken off my fire card since I accidentally gave myself some nasty burns on my foot but never told anyone (no honor, I know!). But I learned my lesson: flip flops and fires don't go together, especially not when you use them to accidentally shovel in a handful of hot ash under your foot

BUT, I managed to treat the wound properly without anyone knowing, so i think it evens out somehow...

Hey folks, I am new to this forum, but had to get a registration and post on this thread.

For context, I did scouts from Cub scouts - Boy Scouts, for about 10 years, ultimately achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. After I turned 18, I stayed with my troop as an assistant scout master for a few years.

So, let's deal with the original post first: The Boy Scout Handbook covers a broad range of topics (as it should - as it is meant to be broadly applicable) none of them in particular detail. The "Field Guide" as it was called in my day covered the more "outdoor" related skills such as bush-craft, plants, clothing, etc. So there is certainly a resource for that type of information.

Scouting provides a framework that reminds me of college. Some general requirements (rank requirements such as knots, skills, etc.) and required merit badges (like emergency prep, swimming, citizenship, environment, etc.) make up the required courses. Then scouts are able to shape their own experiences with other merit badges to match their interests. Look at this link: http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Merit_Badges You could put together quite an interesting experience with the following: archery, backpacking, basketry, cooking, fly fishing, fishing, rifle shooting, shotgun shooting, PIONEERING, weather, WILDERNESS SURVIVAL. (caps for emphasis).

Some previous posts said that the "adult leaders" were a pre-requisite for a good troop. This is only partially true. You need adults to provide support, but the idea of scouting is to develop leadership skills. The scouts who lead the troop (we used to call this the Leadership Council) such as the senior patrol leader, asistant senior patrol leader, the patrol leaders, the quartermaster, troop guide, etc. have the responsibility for developing programs for the troop.

If we wanted to do a survival weekend, a rock climbing trip, a simple hike, whatever, we planned it, we found an instructor (perhaps with the help of the adults), organized the event and were in charge of running it. The adults were there for support and in case something went wrong.

Anyway, my experience may have been atypical, but I wanted to share it as I felt the importance of adults was being misrepresented. I felt that the best adult leaders were the ones that stood off to the side and let the boys develop themselves, and were there to provide help if needed... they were NOT there to set the direction of troop or to plan the events themselves.

1st just let me thank you for a great intro you did else-where! Next I concur with what you're talking about. The PATROL method is the system that BSA uses, or hopefully uses, to achieve their desired goals. However that doesn't always work out the way it's supposed to. I've seen a Troop abused by the inner politics from both the boys & the adults. However, the right people can make it all work! If you've read any of my posts or my Blog then you may be aware that I own the older Handbooks & Fieldbooks. I've also talked about being involved in an EXPlORER post, which is quite different. Not only does the Senior S/M have to do what you said, they are also responsible for having all the paperwork; insurance Requirements; permission forms; etc. properly filled out & in place. I simply view the older era of scouting more "Wilderness Orientated", IMHO. And, oh yeah, welcome again!

Agreed, good post NHCyclist. I was a scout for 5 years, I've been involved in our local troop for 8 years. We have a boy led troop. That being said if I may point something out.

The BSA (Baby Sitters of America) has a desire to have boy led troops. It's the feeling that boys learn to be good citizens by learning to lead, in whatever positions they assume in the troop. They also learn to be good followers by being in leadership positions. That being said you should understand that the adults play a very important role. They set the theme and strategy of the troop, its the boys job to achieve this through tactical execution. The adults leaders obviously will set the tone of the troop.

If you have adults who don't want to go camping, guess what the troop won't be doing? But usually that isn't the case. The problem is that usually that some of the boys, bred on TV and town sports usually want to do LAN parties, play kick ball in the gym and when they do go out have an easy time of it. Others though want the traditional program, if they stay in long enough to become patrol leaders and higher, then that's what the troop does, a traditional program. But always, its the adults who give the scouts the ability to accomplish the mission of the troop. And if the adults don't want to put the effort in, then the troop won't work that well.

The thing our troop suffers from the most? Many of the parents seem to think of the troop is a parking lot for their sons for a few hours.

Despite this, we have a well run troop. It wasn't easy getting to this point and the credit goes to others, not me. The hardest part for parents who do care is letting their sons make an effort and fail, scouting is a safe place to fail you know. They learn and then succeed, both parents and sons. Nice to watch happen over time. :)

I don't want to belabor this discussion, but I do want to clarify my opinions.

The troop would absolutely NOT operate without adults, and adults are critical to setting the strategy and philosophy of the organization - in addition to handling the blocking and tackling, such as operating the organization from a legal perspective, handling the insurance issues and recruiting new blood (other adult volunteers), adults also provide the majority of content (in terms of merit badges, skills teaching, etc). If my original comments implied that adults are not critical, then that is not what I meant.

My key point was that there IS survival content available in the scouting program, although it might not be in the required content. A secondary point was that (ideally), if the scouts in a troop WANTED more survival content in their scouting experience, they should take the initiative to make it happen, not wait for the adults to do it.
