How many on here are willing to bet there life on their kit? Have you ever tried and used what you carry in a critical situation? Will it hold up? I see alot of questionable product in some of the photos I have seen. When the shtf can you really depend on that little wire saw to cut wood? What about that little thin poncho, will it make a shelter in a 40 mile an hour wind and not tear? I feel that if your life depends on what you carry, you had better carry the roughest toughest gear that you can afford, and it should be something you are well versed in using and can use well.

That is why the one comment you see on here quite often is "try your stuff, make sure it works, then practice with it." I would trust the kit I have, most is not pretty, used quite a lot so I know it works and will stand up to what I demand of it. A lot of the things in my kit are military surplus, seem to stand up to rough use pretty good. I also have store bought items, some look like they would break the first time that they are used, and sometimes they do (these get chucked, or re-worked into something that will stand up), so you have to test your stuff, make sure it will stand up to what you want it to.

I am in the process of building my kit now but like riverrat said you really need to test your kit and I am sure you will always find something else you could use or need. Once I get mine built up enough I am going to try it a few different times and probably build on it.

I'm...ummm...not sure if I should take this question seriously. I don't keep a "survival kit" per se, for the bush, when I go out I look around the place and say "yep, might need that, take that and a couple of those..." etc. That's why I seldom contribute to those kinds of threads (unless you know...I'm flaming someone) but yeah, I've counted on my gear to keep me alive and so far I'm still here. I guess it's just because I've always been out in the bush doing stuff so I know what I want to take and how to use what I take. ((shrug))

this post may have little for you. I too have no survival kit per se but carry what I might need. However there may be those out there that think that the little box they bought at the outdoor shop will get them through when in fact it will not. Even with my experience I have bought and tried to use something that ended up absolutely useless. I am just trying to avoid this scenario for those that are less experienced. However I am glad to find that there are many here that have as much or more experience than I in a wilderness setting.

Well I am fairly new to most of this. I was in the Boy Scouts, which was a joke I might add. I spent 3 years in the Army 11B (Airborne Infantry) so I have some survival training. However that was 7 years ago. Being in the Air Force now we don't really spend much time on survival training. I have a kit that I take along when offroading and luckily have never had to use it. Does it work, I hope so. Do I bet my life on it, I do and hope it will save my butt. My thinking is no matter how good the kit is there is always room for improvement. There will always be something you need and don't have or something you wish you would have brought. My kit is bare minimum and hope to get tips and advise on what to add on this forum.

You bring up a great point Reluctantpawn. What usually happens is that somebody will post something like "I got this survival kit on a neclace from xyz, what do you guys think?" You can substitute survival kit for any of the myriad of items asked about. When the person gets the answers to the question, we usually end up with another thread in the General section asking why we can't all get along and that we should be nice. I am of the mind set that if you ask for my opinion, I am going to give it to you. If you don't like the answer, you shouldn't ask the question. So yeah, good point on entrusting your safety and that of others on the gear that you use.

I don't really bet my life on anything, that's why I have life insurance. So, no, not going to bet my life. I will however survive, to help my family survive. Without them, I am nothing, just dust, blowing across a naked desert in search of a place to settle for eternity.

Ah, but there has alway been a "kit". It has evolved, and probably devolved throughout time. The look has changed. The contents were always being refined. Maybe it wasn't carried in the super duper fancy backpack, but there has always been a "kit".

I don't even own a kit, but if I did I wouldn't bet my life on it, thats whats wrong with modern camping in such, to much, it's crowded. To much to carry and worry about, and little butane lighters and matches run out, just like survival guns, and tents will eventually wear out (in extended periods). Knowledge is power, ask the ancient neanderthals and humans that survived with basically nothing 3,000 years ago, they will tell you it is true.

........ wow you'd have to go back a lot farther than that for homo neanderthal...modern man goes back at least 250,000 - 350,000 yrs and it just keeps on backing up as they find and date remains.

you should always test your gear but more importantly like we always say be prepared, don't do anything past your skill level, and depending on your skill level if you have a kit even if something goes wrong you should be fine

Modern man, oh I see, we drove automobiles 25,000 years ago. Modern means in present time, or using technology that is relativeley in the "era", as you would call it. 250,000 years ago was not modern, what so ever. Sure they had advanced cultures with sometimes stable governments and such (much like ancient Greece), but they had crude metal weapons forged from weak material, like bronze and iron, compare that to todays titanium or steel. Not to mention most men, even in those days, still hunted for food even though they had well planted crops for harvesting. Brutal battle games like those of Gladiators are not ever seen in todays society (equals not modern) Almost any advanced culture was still relativeley primitive much like our very first ancestor, with the exception of a few differences. And in that I say no, modern man does not go back 250,000-350,000 years, becuase you have lost the concept of the word "modern".

You know, you've got a point. Correcting a 15 year old boy that is incorrect is probably a waste of time since it seems that he has no willingness to learn. It also seems that said 15 year old boy thinks he knows all there is to know, so there is probably no point in having any discussion with him at all. You would only grasp the concept of our ancient ancestors "lost art", if you loosened up your little kit, and took less. Modern technology has made luxury of the woods, and that is not how it suppost to be, maybe in the modern eyes, but not the primitive. They most likely did carry a deer skin bag full of "neccesitys", A.K.A the Kit, but it wasn't as crammed as most people have theres crammed. They most likely would have excepeted any modern luxuries found in "kits", but through a modern man he wants to except the primitive ways. Little portable microwaves (most likely doesn't even exists), synthetic fibers, big bright tents, radios, playstation 2's, tv,s, dozens of pots and pans, the list goes on and on. When I joined this sight, I thought it was going to be about the loving of nature along with survival, not just preparing preparing preparing and preventing people from opening there eyes and seeing natue instead of closing them and warding it off.

Now, modern technology is not a bad word, exclusive reliance on it and any other knowledge might be. With infant mortality at 50% in some cases aren't you glad that we are not still in those ages, my own grandmother lost a child in between each successful birth. I'm glad my mother was not one of those still ones.

A proper kit is nothing to fear, be ashamed of or left at home, it is to be assembled and used, pared to it functional limit: read Klkak's signature very apropos.
Every primitive society will or has to some extent adopted some modern items such as metal; better iron and steel, fire making items where it has given them a clear edge with survival.
If I had spewed out out your rants to my elders at 15 (I thought you younger) they would at first corrected me; then as I still spewed they would have just remained silent and I would have eventually been a "shock to the gene pool"

RP: my apologies for my misunderstanding of the initial question. I may have sparked some unnecessary debate. My advice on this forum to people who are new to wilderness adventuring has always been, start small and test yourself and your gear. That provides one with a knowledge base for what to do and what will work in a survival situation. When I was younger I got away with a lot of crap through trial and error...I was lucky.

When I was very young living on the rez. Young boys did not speak to adult men unless they were spoken to first. When I was older and my uncles started teaching me stuff, I could talk to them. I was told by one elder that "I should have nothing to say unless an elder gave me something to say". If you don't understand what he told me then study on it awhile.

A great deal of my youth was spent listening. Tsitenha, your last two sentences are very good advice for the more out spoken youth that are present on this forum.

RP, I also have digressed, I don't out of necessity "bet my life on what I have in my kit" but out of all the experience that have lead to the formation of my kit.
It has been accumulated, modified by need and exposure...still a work in progress as I am learning new (to me) ways to do the same job with different, better tools.

when i'm out doors i like to modularize carrying containers for my things to keep them organized, and you could call them kits, as in food kit, first aid kit, mess kit [which often contains my food], and i then put those containers into my pack [a container or kit for carrying all my things together]. that's generally about as far as i take it.

i tend not to carry [or own] much of anything i don't use, or have not used before or unless i'm learning to do something new [generally in the comfort of my home], so i am familiar with every tool i posses. i wouldn't see any point in having them otherwise.

also; those little wire saws are pretty much junk no matter what you're doing. anything they will cut can usually be broken easily in the hand.

Everyone has a kit... It's what's in yer pockets... It may vary in it's parts though, depending on your plans or situation. Mine sure does. The "kit" I carry every morning to work on public transit is light and will fit in my small pack. It has the essentials, 2 kinds of fire, a good blade, a good light source, small medical bag, some paracord, Garbage bag, my Nalgene in it's neoprene bag and the MSR cup with it. A cell phone...

If I'm hiking in the back country I add to it what else I need.

Would I bet my life on my "kit"? We all do that every time we leave the comforting womb of our home. And I have to say that other than smokers, it amazes me how few people do not carry a source of fire and a basic pocket knife at all times. Those 2 items(fire and a blade) are part of a kit we have been carrying since the dawn of time, but in the last 30 years has practically vanished from most people's pockets...

Personally I have no problem with the question.I have a kit and would bet my life on it.If I go to the woods,I have it.Two things I always have is my wallet and keys no matter where I go.The magnesium striker stays on the keychain so Ive got fire covered.I always carry a pocket knife but also have 2 of the stanley retractable razor knife blades tucked in my wallet.I put electrical tape over the edge so I dont get cut.

Here's the thing, about 25-30 years ago I was in the Sales field & any yahoo that wanted to sell a book used certain key words called "hot buttons" to get people droolin' over their wares. I test every piece of gear in my kit. That is how I decide if i says in my kit or goes. That includes the pack system (Kifaru) my kit is stored in. They guarantee that if you can carry it, their pack will hold it. I loaded that pack with rock until my legs buckled. It held without even a wimper. When I was a SERE Instructor in Maine, we did a lot of product testing for LL Bean. They wanted to know if the product failed, how we used/abused the product, and how long it took to fail. If you don't test every piece of egar you never know if you have a golden egg or a goose turd!

YES, I trust what I carry. Way back BR(before retirement) I trusted my gear, hooks climbing and safety strap to the point I could lean back over long drops and work with both hands without a second thought, rode a board hanging from a cable across the Ohio with 80lbs of tools strapped on and relied on Govt. issue material and everything I carry I trust. I know my firearms are all in working order, knives are sharp and pointy and I made them myself. It won't be my gear but my mistake if something goes wrong. If that rifle didn't fire yelling Bang won't work cause most of them couldn't speak English.

Sounds like we're in the same business...before you retired.

One day during lunch a co-worker, 6'3", climbed out and put a clamp as far out as he could on some strand. He bet $5 that nobody could reach it. I, 5'9", climbed up and popped it off. That was having confidence in your equipment. Almost horizontal with one gaff in the pole and my safety strap supporting all my weight I didn't bat an eye.

You got that right. It takes a while to trust your gear completely and if you couldn't reach out as far as you could reach up on the ground you didn't make it. Tough sometimes, had a man freeze and after a smoke we decided if he wanted down he knew the way, left him a truck and went on. He climbed down. We are familiar with always checking equipment so it isn't a big deal, do it automatically.

I find this so ironic. I've worked with guys who would never goof around at the height you guys are talking about but would act like jackasses on the top of a thousand foot stope because it's just a big black hole and they never thought about falling all the way down it (bonus! you get to bounce off the sides!) I never worked that close to an edge without drilling a hole in the drift wall, installing eyebolts and safety roping to the eyebolt, other guys would wonder why. I know, personally, of two guys who fell the distance.

Well, I wasn't on site when the two guys I mentioned fell over the edge and for sure, it's a tragedy for their families, but I always kind of wondered what it was like for the guys working with them, watching the headlamp disappear into the dark. I think bouncing of the sides serves people right for working stupid.

i learned a couple years ago that i loved big tree climbing for just that reason. unlike rock, where there are only so many situations where you can trust a climbing aid explicitly, all the pro and ropes where soundly anchored. it was my first chance for a 200' line ascent or rappel. it's funny to think of trusting living wood better than stone.
