Thanks to all the gear I always lug around with me, I'd be happily telling the one little voice inside my head that's always complaining about bringing so much stuff "see, I told you so!". Then I'd set up a lean-to shelter in an area that's visible from the lake (where my sweetie would be coming from to look for me), wander around a bit, later make a nice dinner with the army rations I have with me, and (highly unlikely because my bf would be looking for me soon) then bundle up in the extra clothin and blanket and go to sleep when it gets dark.
If I were to capsize out on the lake with my kayak, no big panic either. I never cross large patches of open water when the waves are too high for re-entry into the boat, so I'd either be close enough to shore to swim (I'm always wearing my drysuit) and tow the boat behind, or I'd just do the self-rescue, climb back in and continue on my way. Ah, the beauty of going unmotorized!!

Well, if I got where I am because of a vehicle I'm going to try to fix it, if that's not possible I'm going to build a comfy shelter and a fire and inventory what my current resources are. Then I'll access some water and food. That's three steps, right?

Option 2

I'm really well equipped with food, water, axe, rifle. Make a shelter and gather some firewood for tonight Pace of a reasonably sized piece of land and start cutting logs. Claim squatter's rights and just live there. That's three steps also right

Option 3

Curse my Creator for getting myself into this situation because I certainly can't take responsibility for my own mistakes. Wander around in circles kicking trees and screaming because I think that's what you're supposed to do when you're panicking. Cry my little eyes out because WarEagle isn't there to show me the way home. Again...three things.

Ok folks, bet no one will get this.

You are out in the bush; this is an emergency situation day trip only. Your vehicle (jeep, snow machine, quad, boat) what have you? Broke down and no way of communication with the world. What are your first three steps? It could be any month of the year, in any situation except floating in the middle of a large body of water(which means you can't see land) you have done due diligence, folks know when you are supposed to return but you left a broad but general area of where you will be. You have until the end of the day to complete this assignment.

Ok, I play along.

1. I'll stop for a bit and take a long look at the situation while making some coffee and having a bite to eat.

2. I'll take stock of what I have with me and and decide what I can use each item for.

3. Because my folks know generally where I am and when I’m to return. I’m going to stay put. I’ll do whatever I can to make myself look as big as possible, while preparing a place to spend the night in.

I've been in this situation a time or two. It don't do no good to get all excited and run around like a chicken with it's head cut off.

1) Make a fire.
2) Make something to eat and drink.
3) Torch vehicle to create mega smoke.

wareagle69
12-12-2008, 05:43 PM
atta boy finally someone hit on it. in a survival situation even with the general area known(for rescue) it is best to get signalling ready nothing worse than spending time building a shelter and watch your rescue go right on by you so get your fire , flare and whistle get ready to use all 3, if after you have your fire falre and such ready you have time to start improvising your shelter then go ahead but if you are going that deep into the wilds hopefully you have been reading the threads here for a while and have begun to understand the importance of being prepared, but always be ready to signal for help

Gotta disagree. Withe the scenario that you gave, I'm sticking with my plan. As you said it's the 1st three things, not the last.

primeelite
12-12-2008, 08:43 PM
I think you assess the situation first and make sure you are prepared and have everything out of your vehicle that you could use for shelter and as survival tools aside from what you are carrying. I would say then torch the vehicle to create the large amounts of smoke to be found from air or ground. Many people would want vehicle as shelter but you could build a good shelter with material you took from jeep plus what you can find. Like someone said above in that situation it is all about attracting the attention of rescuers to you.

I think burning the vehicle is extreme, I would burn the spare tire, or maybe a seat out of it. Burning the whole car might start more of a fire than you can outrun.

crashdive123
12-12-2008, 08:51 PM
I doubt very seriously that I would burn the vehicle for signaling. Can I fix it? Not if I burn it. As you say, it can be used for shelter. So how to signal? If you need to, start with the spare tire. Burning rubber will give off an incredible amount of thick, black smoke and burn for a long time. If the situation warrants, you have four more tires that you can burn, one at a time. By doing this, you will be able to signal much, much longer than by torching the vehicle. Burn the vehicle, and it will burn very fast. In fact, I'm willing to bet it would last no longer than one tire, or not much longer (especially if there is gas left in the tank). By doing it this way, you still have a reliable shelter. This is why I chose the three things that I did....so I would not make a quick decision that may work, but have better options available.

wareagle69
12-12-2008, 09:30 PM
while i agree torching a vehicle maybe extreme so is dying so whatever it takes to make sure thatsearch and rescue can find you is a go in my book, the quad or jeep can be replaced besides if you talt to the jeep heads you can torch a jeep and still drive it

crashdive123
12-12-2008, 09:33 PM
Never said it wasn't near the top of the list. If I just torch the vehicle I've lost the ability to signal tomorrow. If I torch the vehicle I've lost the ability to use the mirrors to signal. If I torch the vehicle I've lost the ability to use the horn to signal. Just because I take the time to assess the situation and formulate a plan does not mean I will not signal. You asked for the first three things I would do. I gave em to you. If you went with the torching of the vehicle right away before formulating a plan and rescue did not occur within 6 hours or so, you have decreased your ability to signal, thereby decreasing your ability to become rescued and to survive. Out of the 100 or so steps I would probably take in fairly short order, I gave you the first three.

wareagle69
12-12-2008, 09:44 PM
well you must have misunderstood i did not say torch a vehicle what i said was torching a vehicle was a great way to signal, reread post no.9 i said to get these ways of signaling ready so if you hear a plane or ground rescue coming you are prepared to use whatever signal methods you have, most folks want to build a shelter or satrt gathering firewood which is great but to be building a fire and have rescue go by a 1000 yards away because they could not see you is not being prepared what i suggest while getting your fire going id great but get your signal fires ready or any means of signaling then if time permits get your shelter ready

wareagle69

to me all the same action- the most important action but then what

crashdive123
12-12-2008, 09:52 PM
Ah, but I also never said build a shelter or gather firewood. As I indicated in post #13 I would use the spare tire to signal. How to light it. If I did not take stock of what I had with me, the bic and firesteel in my pocket would not make lighting it easy, but if I had a soda can or water bottle - collecting a bit of gasoline so that it can be started quickly would be in order. Also as indicated in #13 shelter is not a concern because I still have the vehicle...and the ability to burn four more tires if need be. For me, I will evaluate the situation, take stock of what I have, and formulate a plan every time. Depending on the situation this may take seconds or it may take much longer. Either way, I will proceed dilberately with a plan that will provide me with the best chance for success.

ok, the long winded way around this is to point out that signalling rarely if ever gets brought up, it is never stressed in a true survival situation a fact that i hate to see omitted it, i am pointing out when you ask someone what are the first three things you would do in a survial situation i do not ever see get my signalling ready, everyone builds a shelter or starting hunting and trapping and eating the last things that should be on your mind, just trying to draw attention to it. as i pointed out stopping thinking and asseing your situation are important if not the most important step i only see it as step one what are your next two actions to save your life

Well some of the other stuff in here such as torching the vehicle would fall under the planning stage, right? Besides I can't imagine torching the greatest asset you have. The vehicle is a lot more visible than a person already, plus 9 times out of 10 that's what they would be looking for make, model, color, etc. Maybe as a last resort to get attention after you've seen resue.

that is the most important thing to do doug, breathe don't do anything rash sit down look at your situation and ask yourself what can i do, after amking your paln and pooling your resources, if you have done your due diligence and told at least two responsible people your itinerary then even if you are off course a bit rescue should be coming soon so don't be brave sit it out get your signals ready relax and enjoy your time alone document if you can what went wrong your reaction to it and what you would do the same or different the next time what would you carry or not carry next time.

Doug's wife: Doug went 4x4ing out at Knik this morning and its 10pm and I haven't heard anything from him.

Me: I'll run out there and find him. He's probably stuck in the mud at Wolf point.

Doug's wife: What if he tries to walk out to get help? You might not find him.

Me: Not on your life. He loves his Jeep to much to leave it unguarded out there.

After I find Doug standing on the roof of his Jeep: What were you thinking?

Doug: Well it didn't look that deep. Do you have any dry clothes? I'm freezing and my extra stuff is behind the backseat.

my advice if you out jeeping and you break down is first have told others where you are going and when to expect your return, when i lived in flagstaff i had 24 hour leinency cuz sometimes timetables are hard to keep, but have some water or way to coolect it maybe a tarp for shelter a first aid kit you will have a shovel being a jeeper i would also carry flares or a flare gun, that is a start you will modify it as you learn your enviroment more

I have a rucksack with layer of clothing, MRE's gloves, several knives, a leatherman, first aid kit, lighter, rope, wet weather gear, saw, shovel, not to mention my hi lift jack and winch. Need a tarp and blanket I guess. Not sure what else.

Well;

#1 I would make a fire, boil some water and make some tea, green tea.
#2 Relax a little, enjoy my time, look at my vehicle and probably fix it, because, there is nothing that me and my John Wayne can't fix.
#3 If I can't fix it, make a little wood pile, mix of dried hardwood and greenwood.
#4 Make a little lean to, pull out a jeep seat and pull out the binos.
#5 Take the binos, look into the trees and on the ground, when I see a squirrel or rabbit, pull out the scoped 22, (that I will be purchasing soon) and get a little extra for dinner.
#6 Enjoy the experience.

a fixed blade and multi tool are great above and beyond that is redundancy, but i would concentrate on a second way of firestarting, as the great wareagle says own these skills and the firesteel is great or i have also purchased the strickforce firesteel recently the steel is great the stricker could be better but what i have done is cut part of a hack saw blade and put that in my leatherman case, if you look inside your leather case there should be a elastic piece there put the saw blade behind there will not interfere with your leatherman

palerider, last week when I went hunting I planed on only harvesting 2 deer. However I took about 40 rounds of ammunition with me. I also had one large knife, one medium knife and a small folder and my Leatherman. Oh yea, and a hatchet. Ooo Ooo, and at least 5 ways of starting a fire.

According to your logic I should have only taken 2 rounds for my gun, one knife, a Firesteel and maybe my hatchet.

Your logic is flawed!

The gear you carry has everything to do with redundancies.

As far as the 4x4 gear, I always carried too much. He ll, when I took the gear out of the Jeep, Blazer, or truck, darn thing raised by 4 inches.

Last winter I tried to drive across Bodenburg creek in my T-100. The ice broke in a perfect rectangle the exact dimensions of my truck. The ice was 6 inches thick. It should have held. I chopped ice for 3 hours with an Estwing carpenters hatchet. Then sacrificed my ATV loading ramps to get my front end over the ice shelf. I learned my lesson well.

One of the reasons I have such a big ATV is to carry all my stuff. My extended cab Toyota T-100 is effectively a one seater. When it is completely empty with a full tank of gas plus me, it weights 4400 pounds. With all my stuff and myself in it, it weights 4800 pounds.

Boy this turned into a long thread...here's a little story from the Yukon about one guys off-road "adventure" this fall.
Guy's wife is away for almost 3 weeks. He goes off in his 4x4 truck on some old unmaintained mining road, equipped with tent, sleeping bag, food for 3 days and his dog. There are some creeks to cross, which he does, until, 47km from the highway, he gets the truck royally stuck. H can't get the truck out, hasn't let anyone know where he was headed and knows that he won't be missed before his wife gets back (in almost 3 weeks). So what does he do? Walk out? After all, for a halfway fit person, this would be an easy 2day walk, for someone physically unfit maybe a week or ten days.
No, he's heard that if you're in trouble, best stay put! So he does. For 3 weeks. Pitches his tent by the truck, extends his food to last about a week, and then proceeds to lose some of his beer gut and starves his dog. Search and rescue gets mobilized when TDW gets back, and after helicoptering around the countryside and spending x amount of tax payer money, they find the dude at his his campspot.
He was neither physically handicapped or ill, nor so underequipped that his life would have been endangered by walking out, nor was there any chance of getting lost (he came in on an old road). He was just too frigging lazy to set one foot in front of the other and walk out. What a total loser.

Indecision, is as deadly as a foolish decision.

A few more days and his Gene pool would have been cleaned up a bit.
