Winter Travel

Headed out today to a local lake to establish a base camp for winter exploring. Sadly I do not get extended days off so I am going to try this method until my job situation changes.

About a 20 minute drive out of town and we are in a nice quiet remote setting. It is about a 1km snowshoe trek into the lake. There is at least 30cm of light powdery snow on the ground and there was a light snow falling on and off all day.

A quick trek out on to the the lake and we established that the ice was 6 inches thick. We explored the shore line and saw some slushy sections. Another hole proved to be only about 3 inches of ice so we headed back to shore to set up a quick shelter and start a fire.

One of the goals of the trip was to hunt some grouse but it proved fruitless.

I did set a snare and we will see if I had more luck with that.

I have spent lots of time out of doors during the other three seasons but I do need some winter experience. Next weekend the night time temps will be close to -25C and we are going to try sleeping out there

red lake the problem with ice right now is not enough cold temps here with too much powder might i suggest you keep 30 ft between you and your partner until getting to a proven area, maybe try also packing snow around the edges of your shelter to stop air flow and add insulation and cut some long evergreen to make a front and a back also looks like from your pic the shelter is a little high(can't tell) maybe if you lower it a bit the tarp will reach the ground better.
just my few suggestions but good for you for getting out and practicing and playing
ah there we go the second pic with you in front ya i would say it is too tall lower that pup down to just above stiing height you will find it warmer

-15 this morning. Snow on the lake is only about 3 inches deep, fingers crossed next weekend we will be out there fishin for walleye

Re Shelter. You are bang on, We started piling brush up around the botton on one side and we were going to wait for the snow to come and make a natural wall there. Looking at it now we will be better off lowering it as you said and piling the boughs inside.

Sweet! Nice pics. We don't have any where near that kind of cold here and generally not much snow. Woke up to about two inches this morning but will probably be gone by noon.

Pictures are so misleading and some of the background is blocked but it would be great if you could move back into the downed wood, assuming it's stable. That evergreen and horizontal log would sure help break the wind coming in off the lake.

Fill the inside with those boughs and it would be pretty toasty. You said "we", how many are there and how long is the tarp front to back?

Maybe thats the beer drinking hut. It's better to stand and drink than sit all cramped.

The we was me and a friend with my two boys 9 and 10.

We did look at moving the site back into the trees more, however it was the bottom of a big slope and it was old boreal forest with lots of blowdown. Going off trail was not practical. We did want to scout the shoreline for a better spot. Alas we have 5 more months of winter to go and tweak the winter getaway.

I love beer but it is heavy and will freeze. When the gun is away for the day I enjoy a little belt of Drambuie.

RL, when on the lake at first or on an unfamiliar lake carry a long sapling (10') cross ways like tight rope walkers use, so that if you do go trough hope fully the sapling will bracket the hole and also provide a brace to help you out.
Also if you pull a sled behind you wear a knife on the outside, easy to get to, to cut yourself away from the sled and weight if you do fall into the water.
For the shelter have a back to it and a reflector in front opposite of the fire.
I lined the inside of my lean to with a emergency mylar reflector blanket to get more of the fire heat back unto me.
The shelter should be lower so that you don't have to heat as much air between you and the top. Snug is better for heat.

RL, off topic? but consider installing if there is not already a detachable sling on the shot gun,
and this is from a friend who is a hunter safety teacher: cover the open end of the barrel with a light "ballon/codom" to prevent snow/frost build up sliding down the barrel and freezing the shot shell crimp in place, he showed me one such gun used by a duck hunter that had frozen shut, with the next shot the barrel ahead of the receiver blew up tearing his forearm and sending shrapnel into his face...luckly he wears glasses and this saved his eyes, just a though.

RL, again off topic, seeing that you wear glasses, try to get UV, polarized over glasses or a prescription UV polarized pair especialy for winter snow use. On a trek snow blindness through reflection on the ice/snow can be an extremely bad risk.

Great advice. We went back today and did lower the shelter and piled all the boughs inside. I will bring another couple of small tarps next weekend to close off the back.

A sling! Yes I need a sling. Trudging 3 kms through the deep snow on snowshoes with no sling is tiring. I absolutely love the idea about the balloon!

It was overcast most of the day so UV protection was not a real issue. I will get a pair of ski glasses. It will help when temperatures get cold.

And the good news is the snare proved successful and we got ourselves a nice snowshoe hare. Beginners luck I suppose.

RL, even with overcast conditions UV rays still penetrate and reflect off snow so get polarized and UV protected, small amount to pay for good eye protection, for every one and none of those $1:00 glasses for the kids. They are worse as they make the eye open even further because they are dark but don't protect at all.
Your shotgun's front mag.cap can be replaced by an Uncle Mike sling stud end cap all ready to go, rear has to be drilled into when you buy at a shop explain that your rear stock is synthetic. Unca Mike also has a nylon sling with detachable swivels (to fit the above sling studs), make sure it is easily shortened or lenghtened for summer and winter wear.

I'll be heading out into Prince William Sound on Wednesday for a 5 days. Myself, my trapping partner and a mutual friend. Theres a bit of snow out there and nights are pretty cold. We will be hunting and checking traps. This will be my first outing since I broke my ankle back in August. Don't have the scope for the new .338 yet so I will be taking the Remington 673 .350 rem. magnum. If anyone is wondering why such a heavy caliber for Sitka deer. I haven't killed anything with it yet. I'm getting all excited just telling you folks about it. :D

Well I got into Colorado yesterday for my 11 day stay, headed up into the mountains (outside Colorado Springs) to set up the base camp for the first group. We got around 8" of heavy wet snow, and 28 to 35 mph winds. Temp not counting wind chill was 8 degrees, at 9pm. The gusting winds were just bitting... It was rough traveling with all that gear and the two mules. One of the mules got hurt, a big gash in the right hind quarter. Was able to get the bleeding stopped with the Celox, and put in about 13 stitches, but had to bring the mule back to the farmer so a Vet can check him. Are we having fun yet! :rolleyes:

That's got to be quite a temperature shock based on where you were coming from. How many groups? Hunters or photographers?

These were two separate groups made up of hunters and for lack of a better word, students. Each group was made up of the hunters, a few friends and some family members. The hunts were for "Late" Plains Deer, east of I-25, Dec 1 to the 14th (that's why I chose Colorado Springs area). All deer licenses in Colorado are by drawing only, for different units. Colorado is divided into over 150 units (sections of land) all #'ed and drawn on a map of the state. In some units you can take either sex, some units are Does Only, and some are Whitetail Does only.
Two in one group and one in the other, had licensees (in different units). The other members of each party stayed in the mountains to be taught basic wilderness skills.

In between the two groups, a writer from one of the better magazines came up to write an article, (a review), of me testing two custom knives ($180 to $250) against one, under $40 production knife, of my choosing. I also got to pick the cheaper custom knife too. I can't say anything now, per an agreement, BUT, I'll post about some great gear finds, and a new, family internet store that opened in February this year (for our type of gear) that has the best customer service I've seen and the prices are fantastic, that site is well worth a look. This will be in a separate post, called "Some Great Finds".
