I'm not familiar with deer bones, but if they splinter, I wouldn't do it...from what I gather, your dogs are not exactly wolfsize and it might lead to problems in the end. You can make your own rawhide chewies for them though. Just soak the hide for a few days in water, such as a stream, until the hair comes off. Scrape off the hair, cut into desired sizes and dry. Only problem is, if you have traditional snowshoes strung with rawhide, your dogs may be tempted to eat them...as one of mine did a couple years ago. No more chewies since then.

You could cut the joint ends off with a powersaw, cut the straight part into 5" or 6" lengths. cook them, push the marrow out, for you or the dogs to eat. Give the cooked round knuckle end joints to the dogs.

The marrow is very rich and very good for active dogs (and people). However splintery bones could lead to a trip to the vet, it is probably better to keep dogs from them.

I have over 20 dogs, and I feed them entire deer carcasses (after I get all the human quality meet off). I regularly go pick-up deer from other people to feed my dogs. I'll feed guts, bones, eyes, skulls...everything but antlers. My dogs do great on it- they love it! I have deer and elk legs and rib cages spread all around my property that some dog is gnawing on. I highly recommend feeding them.

My dogs never have a problem with deer or cow bones, however if I saw a splintered bone I would definately remove that , I don't really see a problem canines been doing it for hundreds of years before we domesticated them . On the other hand though doesn't mean an occasional splintered bone did not cause problems. Keep tabs on em is my opinion remove any that splinter I've never had a problem with mine having any splintered bones. But mine only get the hefty leg bones 6-10" solid hollow pieces usually stuffed with peanut butter or cheese.

Some of you guys have a lot more experience with dogs than I do even though I've been a dog owner all my life. I've always been told to never allow a dog to eat bones of any kind and never eat human food. Not only is there a chance of splinter (deer is much lighter than beef) but they tend to get choked on them as well. In addition, it is my understanding the additional calcium from the bones impacts the dog's ability to absorb other trace minerals like zinc. It also takes much longer to digest bone fragments than it does meat. That could be a real problem if your dog is a working dog and not just a pesky house dog like mine are. This is just my humble opinion based on some things I've picked up through the years. Talk to your vet and follow their advice, of course.

Many years from now, stories will be told by children of the sights they saw while wandering on Jason's property.

Rick, believe me I've heard all the arguments about not feeding human food and bones etc...especially from vets. And, who knows there may be some good points there. But, few vets, and few dog food manufacturers really have much experience in getting a dog to run over 100 miles in a day.

But, one thing is for sure- the vast majority of top racing sled dog kennels (Iditarod and Sprint Racing) feed large percentages of raw meat, and let dogs regularly eat bones, and innards from Deer, Elk, Caribou, Moose, Salmon etc... which supposedly adds nutrients to their diet.

I don't let my dogs eat huge amounts of bones, but they do get them, semi regularly- and the bones do splinter into tiny fragments. My dogs can demolish a deer leg in short time, but I've never had problems- they crush them up into small enough fragments. Will all dogs do that? I dont know...I only know my Huskies.

As far as bone digestion comprimising a working dogs capabilities. I just dont see it...I've run my dogs over 100 miles in 24 hours before. Top Iditarod teams can cover over 150 miles in a day sometimes. Dogs working like that burn 10,000-12,000 calories a day. You cant get a dog to consume that many calories feeding regular dog food, because they cant eat that many cups of food and not get bloated. So, you have to amp up the diet with high fat content and mineral rich things to keep them fueled and interested in eating. A fleshy, meaty bloody leg bone given to a dog that just ran 30-50 miles seems to strike a primal chord in them, and recharges them. It is a huge reward- kind of like wolves feasting after a kill. Run em' 50 miles over 6 hours, feed them some raw meat (and some kibble) then let them sleep for 6 hours, and get up and do it again...over and over until the finish line, that is how most distance sled dog races are run.

After I finish boning out a deer, caribou, moose or black bear. I just toss all the bones out into the dog yard and let Bandit have at it. He'll eat for a week on a deer, caribou or black bear. A bit longer on a moose. After he cleans them up I'll go out there with a hammer and break open the large leg bones so he can get at the marrow.

Jason, Every fall I have musher's beating down my door after my beaver carcases. They say that the dogs will eat beaver when they wont eat nothing else. They also say it has an extremely high energy content. The going price is anywhere from $2 per pound up to $5 per pound as the season progresses and it's harder to come by. There is a certain lady musher up here who swears by it and will buy all I can get to her.

Jason - Hence my disclaimer. There's a huge difference between owning a house dog and working with them day in and day out. I recognize that fact and I realize you have a vast experience with dogs that I don't and will never have. Is there a difference between the metabolism of any mushing dog and my house dogs? Probably. Does it make any difference in their eating habits? Another probably.

I just wanted to throw the information out as "food" for thought and as a reminder that house dogs are a lot different than your mushers.

I bet feeding time around your place is a bit of a frenzy.
