question regarding injuries

Hey everyone.

I have 8 screws and a plate in my ankle, and was wondering if anyone has gone out in the brush after similar surgeries. Any major problems encountered that have to do with the injury (esp in cold weather)?

I read klkak's (sorry if that's the wrong name) post on how he broke his ankle and had some jewelry put in, but I don't think he's been out since.

Just wondering if anyone had any stories that I could learn from.

I've got some hardware in one ankle,a couple of screws, started with four but they took two back out--- sets to throbbing in the cold and wet weather but it doesn't slow me down a lot. I had something like 86% recovery from the break, the orthopod said, but he isn't the one that has to walk on it. It's usually more like I go ahead and do the same things I always did (hiking, snowshoeing, some climbing) and it hurts after the fact.

i have multiple injuries that come back to plauge me from time to time but learn to listen to your body it will tell you what to do( then just ignore it and do what ya want anyways, no wait thats marriage) well what ever get in shape stay in shape(round is a shape right?) and try not to worry as much is you can only do a mile today maybe next month you can do two miles and so on just retrain those muscles and hopefully it works out for the best

When I broke my ankle,I opted to forgo the screws,since everyone whom I met told me they would work their way loose and need to be removed later on,and I was not willing to go through 2 surgeries for it,so I had 14 weeks of not being allowed to put weight on it,and now I have no issues with it hurting,even when hiking wearing only low cut shoes.

I do have neck issues from that same accident that I wished I had opted in for surgery,as weather chages and times of high stress can make that act up ,but again alot of it is all in how you let it affect you,it hurts,I won't lie,but I don't let it stop me from doing what I want.

ha that reminds me i broke my ankle valentines night the last ride of the night a big bull named forced labor if ya covered it was gonna be a pay check but i bucked off and he landed on my ankle all i did was shave some of the cast so i could strap my spurs on take some vicaden and a shot and still ride just tried to make sure when i came off i landed on my left foot which was the side i should be coming off the bulls not the right side

I had to get the hardware the bone was totally crushed, the bone re-grew around the screws so there's no getting the last two out.

About a ton of rock fell on me remy, if I hadn't happened to just look up when I did it would have landed on my head instead of on my leg, it just caught me when I jumped (almost) out of the way. Another piece the same size landed right beside me. That'll ruin your whole day

Almost like Trax, I had a 2 ton re-inforced ore pass door, break its hook and fall on my leg and foot it would have gotten a lot more of me but luckily I got most of me out of the way 29 yrs ago and still limping.
Almost got gangrene but I cut off the sloughed off flesh with a knife as I was recovering in the cabin. They didn't take my leg off :D

can't say a rock fell on me...but i do have the most hardware so far!!--too bad i snapped it in half trying to ride my friends skateboard...that's embarrassing to say
cool part was i got a neat little view of what my tibia looks like when it popped through the skin :rolleyes:

It's kind of like testing the temperature of the water. First you stick in your toe to test the water. Some just found out it was good they were testing with their ankles rather than their entire bodies.;)

For me,it was a 79 year old lady who turned in front of me from the opposite direction,she was headed south,me heading north,said she didn't see me (make sense,she was turning into the doctors office....the EYE doctor) she got six stitches.,ggrrrrrr,my ankle broke because I locked down the brakes trying not to hit her.

It would seem ankle injuries run the norm here.

Kinda makes you feel like dinosaurs or "ANKLEASAURS"...:D:D:D

Two years ago I shattered my right tibia. I still have the steel rod and seven screws in it. I broke the leg in September and was back in the bush by March and Guiding full time by the middle of May.

My most recent injury left me with 2 screws in my left ankle. It is not yet fully rehabilitated. I haven't been out in the bush because I've been taking care of my wife who just had a tumor removed from her brain. I will be out on my trap line starting next week.

As far as any limitation go. I am a bit more cautious. My right knee does bother me some when the temps drop below zero. But I don't let it stop me.

My advice to you is to get out in the bush and see what you can handle. Your body will let you know when to slow down or stop.

well two things here i would hazard a guess that most broken bones are ankles and wrists/hands its what we use the most, also people that get out and live life not just sit in a chair reading or posting or what have you all day long will sustain more injuries than those who do not get out and seek adventure, i ya want to get into the list of camapring injuries i would be happy to start a thread on that but as my favorite singer once said "it ain't the years its the miles and by now i got both, by the way for the person keeping score here( and you know who you is) i like both type of music counrty and western

well last i checked my medical books fingers are still part of the hand....maids usually follow the rangers someones gotta clean up after we open a case of whup azz

A Friend Of Mine Has An Ankle That Recived Shrapnel In Iraq. Broke His Ankle In 2 Places And Some Other Stuff. And He Wears A Taller Hiking Boot Than He Used To. Look Into A Good (And Expensive Probly) Pair Of Boots And They Should Help Support It And Keep It From Side-Side Action.
