A bit of background first:
All of the Canucks on the forum here will be familiar with the Possession and
Acquisitions License required to own firearms.
For those who aren't Canucks, or for those Canucks who don't know of this, in
order to own a firearm in Canada (long rifle), you need to have a Possession and
Acquisitions license. This is only for long rifle (hunting rifle, shotgun, etc). This
doesn't apply to handguns, some semi-autos, full autos, etc...
To get the license you have to take a course, take a test, then (providing you
pass the test), fill out registration forms, bundle them up with a passport
photo, and the registration fees, send them off, wait 45 days, then (if you've
passed a criminal check), get your P.A.L license.
In September of this year, I took the "course", wrote the test (passed with
98%), then sent off my mug photo, the forms and the fees.
4 weeks went by, no response, then 5 weeks, then 6 weeks, and I'm getting
concerned a little.
On Tuesday when I got home, a pleasant surprise was waiting for me in the
mailbox....you guessed it, my PAL came in the mail. :D
Now I have to figure out what kind of rifle I'm going to buy, then start saving
up for it...oh, and have to start saving up for bullets too.... :eek:
Just wanted to pass on the happy news to all.
Like the saying goes, I'm certifiably legal now, not legally certifiable...

Congratulations. There's a gun show in town this weekend. The organizers say that they are expecting more turn out and sales of arms and ammunition this weekend than they have seen in their long history. One of the shops that I visit quite often says they are having trouble keeping up with the demand. The economy may be tough, but people seem to have budgeted for their priorities.

I know what you mean Crash. Seems to be that way here as well.
Was reading in the news that the sales of firearms in Canada this past year
was greater than Great Britian, France, and Italy combined... :eek:

Guns and ammo are a hot item now. Lots of folks are stocking up and used firearms are bringing top dollar. I can't think of anyone I know that doesn't own at the minimum a 22, shotgun & deer rifle. Handguns, used bring more than new ones bought from a gun store. I noticed a big sign in a local gun store to buy em while you could. You can draw your own conclusions for this, just kinda strange for this area.

i hate those tests. i had to take the youth hunter class thats really bad its eight hours of a really slow talking guy telling me what i already know. btw i'd buy a 30-06

Three long guns that are hard to beat are:
Ruger 77/22 .22lr (stainless/laminated) $500-600 new
Ruger 77 Hawkeye 30-06 (stainless/synthetic) $600-700 new
Remington 870 Express magnum 12 guage combo(parkerized/synthetic or wood) Less then $400 new
I think the US Supreme Court settled the question, thank goodness.
I just went and wrote the tests when I got my PAL and my hunter's safety (yeah, when I decided to go legal I went all the way) The guy that gave me the test was watching me going through the thing ticking off my answers and he said "You must have really read that manual." I said, "There's a manual?" I got 98% too.
davef, depends on what you're doing, you might want to look for something that's "all round" and of course, can you shoot straight? Think about a 12 guage.

i took the CFSC (needed for a pal) CRFSC (needed for handguns and bushmasters) Black badge course (IPSC combat shooting certification) Hunters Safety course , Mandatory trapper education , manitoba trapper education , advances hunting skills course, and my CFO STILL wont let me buy even a damned single shot .22 so im reduced to borrowing friends with my MPL. sad state of affairs for canadian youth whos parents dont own firearms.

I put a Remington 870 12 gauge deer gun away on lay-away. Have $50.00
left to pay on it, then another $50 for cleaning kit, shells, and trigger lock.

You don't need Hunter Safety courses for a PAL. You need a Hunters safety course for a hunting license. You need to pass a Firearms Safety course for a PAL.
I just went through it and it is a PITA but still think it is a good thing. Won't stop criminals from getting guns but if everybody followed the rules about storage it would keep a certain percentage of guns off the street.
Red lake I certianly agree that most could use a block of instruction on firearms saftey but know it is a comon practice of the antis to use any excuse to hinder the ownership of firearms. I think the restriction to use of firearms in public until saftey training would be ok but I gues things are diferent in other places. But the restriction of use and possesion has caused consfication on a large scale around the world and always to no good of the public at large.

I'm not much of a hunter, but I like to fish and got the shotgun primarily for
protection from bears. The good fishing in my area, is unfortunately, also in
bear country, and over the summer and fall, in our area, and north of
us in the Yukon, there have been multiple bear attacks on humans.
I live in the interior of British Columbia, about 500 miles north by northeast
of Seattle.
One fellow on the coast had a bear run down the dock, ignore salmon, jump
into the guys boat and start gnawing on his leg. Turns out the same bear
had attacked another fisherman a couple of days before.
Just last month about 70 miles north west of me, a fellow was out for a walk
with his two dogs. The dogs managed to scare up some cubs. Well momma
bear didn't like that, and attacked the guy. He eventually managed to kill the
bear with a stick (sounds like a tall tale, but is true), but not before having
most of the back of his scalp removed. Took 61 stitches on the back of his
head for him to get out of the hospital.
Not exactly sure about the time frame, but I think it was early fall, a
geologist in the Yukon unfortunately got between a grizzly and her cubs.
He wasn't as lucky.
When I was taking the PAL course, there was a young fellow in the course
who was bow hunting a couple of hundred miles south-east of me, and had
a black bear charge him and take the doe that he just killed. That was why
he was in the course. He wasn't going to go out bow hunting again without
a rifle. In his case he had both bear spray and bear bangers but neither
of them deterred the bear from getting that doe.
And finally, just a couple of weeks ago, another fellow in the area had to kill
another bear. Somehow he managed to surprise the bear while walking on
a trail near his house. He got mauled up pretty good before he was able to
kill it.
Hence my desire for getting a shotgun. From now on, when I go fishing, it
comes with me, and I make sure that it's loaded with slugs.
I don't have much desire to end up as a meal, if you know what I mean.

There are just courses for a P A L, but taking the hunter safety course along with the P A L is only a few hours or 1 day longer and you get the flexability of going hunting if you want to.

Davef I agree with your reasons for obtaining a gun , I think it is a shame almost world wide to need the goverments permission to protective ones selfbut it does cut down on the misunderstandings . I have a CCW here in WV as I did in TX before I moved here and I don't go any where unarmed even when hunting I carry conceled. The one time I went unarmed here while waiting for my CCW I was walking my Airedale in the woods and someone shot him dead from hiding This was before my heart surgery I couldn't even run off. I was in fear of my life but the person did not revel their selfs or do any thing else.
I don't need anyones permission to protect myself but would be taking a chance without conforming to the regulation.
I hunt and fish and have always had a way to protect my self and took the trouble to learn how to use the weapon . And for over 40 years I have not had to use those weapons but they were a comfort except the time one time I really needed , If that time had been someone who wanted no witnesses and I had a loved one with me I have to ask if it is worth legal issues to protect self and others.

It appears to be a real issue just about everywhere. I've been catching up
on the debate here in Canada, and have been following it in the U.S. as well.
It's a very polarizing issue in both countries. I have friends who say that
they will never give up their firearms, who say that they will never register
them, and would bury them in their backyards before giving them up.
I have a CCW here in WV as I did in TX before I moved here and I don't go any where unarmed even when hunting I carry conceled. The one time I went unarmed here while waiting for my CCW I was walking my Airedale in the woods and someone shot him dead from hiding This was before my heart surgery I couldn't even run off. I was in fear of my life but the person did not revel their selfs or do any thing else.
That's really sad to hear. I don't know what I'd do if someone shot my dog.

Please correct me if I am wrong but with a CCW in WV didn't the Gov sign into law that is not only a Castle Doctrine type but it also covers anyplace you are allowed legally to carry. For instance you are no longer required to retreat from an attacker and if you consider yourself or property in danger you can use any force you want? It's 12:30 am here and don't have anyone to ask.

Not sure about WV, but that's my understanding of the FL law that was passed. I have read that quite a few states were modeling their laws after the FL ones.

In Indiana,it is legal to defend yourself and your property.
It's legal in Canada as well, you just can't use more force than is necessary.
My intention in getting the shotgun wasn't for home defense, but rather for
bush defense, as in "I'm fishing and run into a rather angry bear that wants
me for lunch" :)
For home defense, I have a dog that makes lots of noise, as well as many
non-lethal alternatives placed at opportune places throughout the house.
Because of storage restrictions on firearms, it would take a fair bit of time
for me to unlock the trigger lock then unlock the ammo box then load the
shotgun. Far easier to phone the cops then get the baseball bat ready in
case they get by the dog.:)

I can understand that, given what junior barnes was posting about chemical warfare or whatever the **** that was, but I am speaking in terms of absolute, life threatening necessity. Do I have to add my resume (years of using firearms)? or some kind of disclaimer...kids don't try this at home, uncle Trax is a bit of a nutjob.

Don't think that I posted this yet, been busy lately with moving my mom and getting
ready for Christmas among other things, but this is the shotgun that I ended up with.
I really like shooting it, although I have to take it in and get a few things done to it.
I thought it would kick a lot more than it does. Actually feels not too bad. Now just
have to figure out how to hit something with it :D

i have not checked out canadian laws i had to register myself in the states i choose not to carry firearms anymore i am always armed just in a more inconspicous manner most that posses guns for illeagal and immoral purposes ususally don't no jack about close quarters combat

Check again davef, in Canada you do not have the "right" of self defense.

OWVC you are right about the WV castle doctrine but I am not sure of its exact wording. My gun club has a guy that keeps track with 2nd amendment type stuff and he has not got back with the particulars yet.
I think that training is good when you can get it but bottom line is when you fear for your life and they can't teach that.
By the way I have been having computer trouble and am having trouble getting on line but will work on it.
