I do not know if anyone will know this but i thought it was worth asking. I am just wondering there is something a soldier is supposed to repeat and only say when he is captured. I want to know what this is called and if possible, what it is they are supposed to say. I know it starts with their name then their citizenship or something like that, any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Kody

For me, it's name, rank and debit card password. I'd pay good cash to be returned safely home.

In the US Military all your suppose to give if captured is Name, Rank and Serial Number

Problem with this is that the military stopped giving each soldier a serial number awhile ago. If you look at your 'tags now you'll see your social security number where there used to be your serial number. But yes in the past that is what you were "supposed" to give out.

Reminds of DeNiro in that movie Ronin, talking about being tortured by an enemy

"I held out til they gave me a grasshopper."

"What's a grasshopper???"

"Well, you take a little creme de menthe, a little...."

Hi Cody, I don't know if it has a specific name, but you are referring to Article 17 of the Third Geneva Convention:

It says:

"Part III: Captivity

Section 1: Beginning of Captivity

Article 17

Every prisoner of war, when questioned on the subject, is bound to give only his surname, first names and rank, date of birth, and army, regimental, personal or serial number, or failing this, equivalent information.

If he wilfully infringes this rule, he may render himself liable to a restriction of the privileges accorded to his rank or status.

Each Party to a conflict is required to furnish the persons under its jurisdiction who are liable to become prisoners of war, with an identity card showing the owner's surname, first names, rank, army, regimental, personal or serial number or equivalent information, and date of birth. The identity card may, furthermore, bear the signature or the fingerprints, or both, of the owner, and may bear, as well, any other information the Party to the conflict may wish to add concerning persons belonging to its armed forces. As far as possible the card shall measure 6.5 x 10 cm. and shall be issued in duplicate. The identity card shall be shown by the prisoner of war upon demand, but may in no case be taken away from him. ........"

There is also a 4th Geneva Convention, which deals with the treatment of Civilians in wartime. You might want to look that up for yourself in Google ;)

These words have always meant a lot to me.

The Code of Conduct
I . I am an American, fighting in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense .

II . I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command. I will never surrender the members of my command while they have the means to resist.

III . If I am captured I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and to aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.

IV . If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information or take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not , I will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me and will back them up in every way.

V . When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am required to give name. rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful to their cause.

VI . I Will never forget that I am an American , fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.

Hey Hop,
I take you've been through level "C" Code of Conduct training? The real key phrasing is in the second sentence of Article V (utmost of your ability). Also remember that tactical information has a relativly short useful lifespan where as biographical info (ie. anything about you) is useful as long as they have you and longer.

3. If I am captured I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.

First you have to be captured, those first few minutes dictate what happens to your life. If your captors think they can use you, you'll be spared, used and abused. If they think you will be too much trouble, you're dead.

The war with terrorism does not follow the articles of the Geneva Convention, your enemy is not a country or nation, but rather suicidal extremists. The rules have changed since I attented all those special schools in the USMC.

So, all I can say is that I know "me." I'm pro American, I look others straight in the eyes when I speak to them, when challenged - I have never backed down no matter what the odds. At times, it has really hurt.

Now, throw the wife and kids into the scenario, I'll be your freak'n sheep.

Also remember that tactical information has a relativly short useful lifespan where as biographical info (ie. anything about you) is useful as long as they have you and longer.

Didn't I hear somewhere that our modern soldiers are no longer encouraged to resist torture? Are in fact encouraged to simply cooperate, at least in terms of giving information?

After all, done correctly, no one can resist torture indefinitely. Eventually everyone talks. If your forces know you've been captured, they will go ahead and assume the enemy knows what you know, and change plans as necessary.

And, of course, if it is common knowledge to the enemy that you have been trained to cooperate with interrogators, then maybe they won't bother with torturing you as much.

Once captured they are not going to interrogate you just to keep in practice , the either want to know something or confirm some thing .Why do you think we water board detainees at Gitmo? we think they may have info we want.
A person should resist as long as possible however short or long that is,any thing less is TREASON.

OK, so far we have brought up John Wayneing it (this will get you hurt really bad or dead) (Oh I could tell you some great stories from SERE school)
Next is the Geneva Conventions: Name, rank, serial number, etc. This is to identify your self as a soldier and not a spy etc.. Under the conventions you shall be allowed to fill out a RedCross card.
Lastly is the American Armed Froces "Code of Conduct" This code along with training on the code and its meaning. You are to resis to the "utmost " of your ability. This means resisting giving up information until permament injury or death is imminent. This doesn't mean giving up irrelavant information, like wise understand you may be asked to give this info an then aked other more important info. Their justification will be that you gave them the first info freely ...why not this info? DON'T FALL FOR THE TRICKS!

chiangmaimav

There is a trick which was taught to me in which you hyperventilate yourself if torture is imminent. Breathe as quickly as you can and since you are already obviously highly stressed at this point you will hyperventilate and go unconscious or perhaps suffer a heart atack but at that point maybe it is better if you do. Thank God I never had to try this theory and am only passing it along.
