Survival Situation Scenario (unorthodox)

You're standing on a street in Asheville, TN, with a pack full of clothes & books and about 1500 US dollars. You don't know anyone, but you'd like to set up a life here. How do you survive?

I'd start before I got there. I'd contact the Asheville Chamber of Commerce and order their relocation package. A lot of information and probably some coupons in a little package.

Well, if'n you're using the internet you need an internet connection and a computer. Try the public library.

Also, read the local newspapers while there.

@crashdive123: I'd love to do anything..except teach. I've had enough of it, the sitting, the planning, the office politics, grading papers. I want something physical, maybe something outdoors. I was even thinking about Wwoofing (http://www.wwoofusa.org/).

Although I think you'd have to look at something a little more substantial than a street corner. I don't think wwoofin wworks on street corners.

i showed up in flaggstaff arizona in 94 like this i stayed in a camp groung for a bit but with 1500 dollars i think a hostle would have been affordable i started with day labor then got warehouse work loading semi's then found an apt then a permanent job then found bullriding and the rest is history, i have had friends join AA and travel the country going from meeting to meeting and the folks there really support each other

Find a current construction job or Manpower. Start work that day. Get a good motel room, usually you can find them for a hundred bucks a week.

If you go with Manpower, schedule yourself one day off to go on interviews, do your resume on the weekends, pref. on sat. at the public library. Stop by the Goodwill and pick up a set of nice clothes.

I walked up on a construction company once, told them I would do their crap work and anything else that needs to be done. By the end of the week, they gave me a radio and a crew of 7 hispanic workers. Three weeks later, picked up a job with an env. company with bennys and a good hourly rate.

@Trax: You're right, and if I go the Wwoofing route I'll order a directory in January and have a place lined up before I leave Bangkok.

@wareagle69: I've done this before in a few cities. First was Mendocino, where luck and the fact that I have carpentry skills landed me a good job on a ranch. Next I did it in Vegas, then Reno, and finally in Thailand. However, this is the first time I've had access to the internet before "jumping," and I just wanted to see what advice I could get. And I've gotten some good stuff!

@FVR: I've got nice clothes--been wearing a necktie to work for the last few years. If I can really find a place for 100 bucks a week, I'll be glad.

$100 per week isn't going to get a permanent place, but an extended stay hotel will serve its purpose. At a time in my life, I was unemployed and going through a divorce. Not a good time. I found work at a restaurant as a server and bartender and then worked at night deliverying newspapers. While the income wasn't great, it did meet my needs and I was able to save enough to get me back on my feet.
