Twilight to dark Re con lessons learned

I bet most don't go for a solo night hike cross country with no light just for education. I wanted to test some equipment, and me for night hiking and re con practice.

Results: I did fair, but maybe that is because I never got more than a mile from the cabin, the equipment did not as good as I had expected. I wanted to do it in near total darkness, as soon snow cover will reflect enough starlight to make the drill void.

The footwear was wrong, to slippery on the moss, I'll change that and retest tomorrow. Might try caulk boots. The 1.25X to 4X by 30MM with German #4 reticle worked good down to near total dark. Tomorrow I'll take the AR-15 pistol. Also tomorrow I'll take the 10 X 40 Zeiss Binoculars to see which gathers more light in the heavy canopy dark woods at last twilight.

One lesson learned is that as it got darker I needed to keep shortening the telescoping stock, I think it was to keep more light coming through the scope relative to the light between my eye and the scope. Maybe a hood would help.

What I like about hiking (mushing or riding a horse) at night without a light is how much it makes all your senses come alive! The sounds and smells really become more vivid when you can't see.

Been there, done that. I'll pass, did enough of the sheot early in life. Night patrols in the jungle and through the mountains, whooya!

I'll just be a sitting around the fire, with a cup of applepie. This time of year, with a nice wool blanky on my shoulders.

i can't imagine trying to make it thru the bush here at night sans moonlight and full cover can't see my hand in front of me face when it is like that too much risk of injury and too many lite enough nights to do what i need, but i applaude your efforts my friend always good to learn your limits understand them then increase your knowledge and comfort levels, carry on my son

It's a good "what if" scenario.

I recall a fishing trip this past summer. went farther back along the creek than we planned. fishing was great. caught my limit. twice. started heading back, met up w/ father-in-law, wife, son. We got to the cave-creek cut-off - about 2 miles from our drop off point at dusk - cleaned the fish, then hauled butt down the trail to the pick up point.
In an area w/ bear, carrying and smelling like fish, dusk to dark. I noticed a definite distortion of distance and depth perception, heightened sensory perception, even if it was inaccurate.
so - now that I know, I am more prepared for next time.
