Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows a doctor to see inside the abdominal and pelvic cavities using a thin tube with a camera at the end, called a laparoscope. The procedure involves making small incisions, usually less than one centimeter, most commonly near the belly button. The camera sends images to a monitor, enabling precise diagnosis and, if needed, treatment without large surgical cuts.
This procedure can be diagnostic or operative. In a diagnostic laparoscopy, the surgeon examines the abdomen and pelvis to find causes of pain, tumors, infections, or other abnormalities when other imaging tests are inconclusive. The operative laparoscopy allows the surgeon to perform treatments such as removing cysts, tumors, or repairing hernias using small surgical instruments inserted through additional tiny incisions.
Laparoscopy has advantages over traditional open surgery, including shorter recovery time, less pain, and smaller scars. It is usually done under general anesthesia and can often be performed as an outpatient procedure. After the surgery, the instruments and laparoscope are removed, gas introduced during the procedure is released, and tiny incisions are closed with small dressings, allowing patients to return to normal activities faster.
