View Full Version : Where would you go?

Blaahvid

For some time I've been wanting to arrange a special kind of camping trip.
My experiences with serious camping trips, have allways been in swedish or norwegian forrests, but for a long time I have been thinking about doing a kind of modern day 2-3 week long "Robinson Crusoe" trip.
Thing is - Where can you find a suitable Island for this?
I was thinking of something tropical, perhaps in the gulf of Panama.
The ideal Island would have no human inhabitants.

Any suggestions?

Gilligan's Island is my first suggestion.

Fantasy Island then maybe?

"da plane, da plane"!

There are some huge uninhabited islands along the Yukon River, and the Mississippi River I'd live on one of those to fulfill that type of fantasy...I'm not really into the whole island alone thing.

Sorry, no advice from me. All of the islands that I have been on have had people....well except for the last one. It was truely magnificent. Tropical fruits in abundance, coconuts all around, wild game that cooked up so tender, plenty of fish, fresh water waterfall, caves for shelter......and not a person on the island. But alas, since my return from paradise a developer got wind of the splendor of the island and has built a high rise on it. So sorry, no recommendations.

Well, let's see, there's Fire Island off the coast of New Jersey. They say the naitives there are really friendly....

The Island of Dr. Moreau?

Now that sounds exciting and adventurous.

There are a lot of very small Islands w/o people on the Gulf side of South Florida. Just don't run into any drug smugglers!

Oh, you also want to go there between December and March. Summer time and the rainy season they have mosquitoes the size of Buick's!

Question, how are you going to get there?

On a serious note Blaavid (what....you didn't think my first post was serious?) There are many, many uninhabited islands. If you don't want to restrict yourself to tropical climates, may I suggest the San Juan Islands, or one of the hundreds of islands in the Straights of Juan de Fuca. I used to sail that area (between Washington state and Canada) quite often. There are many uninhabited islands worthy of exploring.

All uninhabited islands are worthy of exploring!

Except if it's uninhabited because it was a nuclear or chemical test site!

Why an island? Why not some uninhabited stretch of beach? There's plenty of that in the world.

Blaahvid

@ Rick

I have been researching islands in the Panama gulf and the Cook islands, but it's not easy finding an island where you're left all alone and where you can setup camp.

Most beaches will attract people and I would want an authentic "Robinson Crusoe" feel if you will. As "Castaway" as I can get, live of what the island provides. That's also why I was looking for a warmer climate

I was hoping someone in here had some serious ideas, but it doesn't seem like it.

Alaska has thousands of islands. And some are infested with rats......? Interested....? Some infested with Brown Bears...that would be challanging.....?

Folks, I appreciate the sense of humor as much as anyone else, but also have to say that I too, have thought about the
"Castaway" / "Robinson Crusoe" experience as well. I remember reading Robinson Crusoe, Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure
Island, etc... when I was in my early teens and have been attracted to that all my adult life. Having seen the movie Castaway,
I've come away with the realization that existing on a deserted Island for any length of time would be a grueling task, yet
I fully understand Blaahvid's desire to do a two or three week solitary trip.

As Crashdive mentioned, I've looked at the Straights of Juan de Fuca as I live
in British Columbia, but found them to be too close to civilization. Also, like Blaahvid, I've thought about the Cook Islands,
and most of the South Sea Islands. There is something exotic and attractive about them, but civilization has encroached
upon those island nations and I really doubt that anyone could find something deserted anymore. I've even heard that the
Island used in Castaway has been turned into a tourist resort and now has about 20 or so "cabana's" on-site.
Disheartening to those of us attracted to the Robinson Crusoe scenario.

I've been thinking lately that the best option as Rick has mentioned, would be to find a deserted stretch of beach on an
inhabited Island or remote coastline somewhere, and spend some time there, but it wouldn't have the same allure as an Island.

I've been taken to task over this many times, by wives and friends, been told it's a foolish and dangerous thing to even
think about, let alone do, but one day I'd like to give it a try, even just for a couple of weeks.

I'm not certain if Blaahvid is referring to a fully outfitted 2-3 weeks alone on a deserted Island, or if he's referring to a
"nothing but a knife" excursion. Maybe he could give a little more information on his plans.

Cheers

I have set foot on hundreds of islands in Prince William Sound that are uninhabited. There are even more in southeast. Just make sure your visit is in the summer or it may be a bit chilly. However in the summer there are allot of kayakers that use some of those islands. So winter might be a better option.:D

DaveAUA

I've had a bit of experience with this here in Thailand. I sea kayak, and there are tons of islands that don't appear on maps. Sometimes I'll camp on such an island. The worst thing is finding water. There's hardly any on a small island, at least those in the gulf of Thailand. (Tom Hanks got really lucky!) There's also not much variety of animal life, usually just birds and monitor lizards.

The best thing is the sense of being "lord of the land" and, of course, having all the fish/shellfish you can eat. If you were going to go in for it long term, I think it would make a lot of sense to scout out your area, survey the islands, etc., for a good while before going out there for your Robinson Crusoe experience.

Here's a link to the story (http://www.janesoceania.com/suvarov_tom_neale/index.htm) of a guy who did what you're suggesting.

My idea would be to go in with some basic equipment, but still trying to maintain an authentic "Castaway" feel to it.
I haven't made a packing list as such, but I would include basic stuff like cooking gear, knife(s), large tarp, hammock etc. as well as a some minor supply of food and a few "luxury items" like books, sun screen lotion and insect spray.
All in all, I would only bring enough to set up a very basic camp.

I hadn't thought about Thailand - maybe that wasn't a bad idea.
Cook Islands doesn't seem to be an option anymore

You don't need an *actual* island. I find remote, rugged beaches and coves and camp there. Don't limit yourself IMHO. Remoteness and solitude is all that's really necessary. Surely you can scan a map and find somewhere like that. Hope it works out well for you. Cheers, Reiver.
