well had i been a responsible climber and left an itinery of my climb i think i would have the same results would have bound my ankle as tight as icould made a crutch and found a place to hole up and wait for rescue having broken my ankle before and walked on it for 24 hours before wife was able to get me to emergency i can speak on this witha little experience to back it up- it also probably helps to have a high pain tolerance and a (wait for it) will...to ...survive.

Itinerary, as WE said. People so often ignore it and it's just crucial. When you are leaving, when you will be back and by what route. The SAR might have started much earlier had he done it.

Who knows how I would have done. I would have been prepared for more than a one day trip. Would have had multiple ways to start fire (esbit fuel, pocket rocket) (hot water can help keep you warm even above the tree line). Would probably have had some "hotties warmers" and some extra clothes in my pack. Have been trained in first aid. Hopefully, I would have come through okay.

Intenerary is a must for a solo trip like that. His experience is probably what helped him, while the nature of his trip probably hurt him. (That's why I don't climb - can't bring the kitchen sink)

It was interesting, as Fox News ran the headline, "Climber survives 5 days, ate centipedes to stay alive." I think it was the drinking from the stream that helped him survive.

Like Rick stated, several sources of fire making, hot pads, and maybe a space blanket could have made his stay a bit more tolerable. Oh, and detailed hike plan/itinerary.

Glad he is ok, though.
