Three day kit

I'm finally going to have a three day weekend, so I'm going camping with my new three day kit plus surplus poncho and wool blanket. This is my third three day kit I've put together. the first two i bought stuff as i saw it on sale, never really thought of the cost. last sat. i went on a mission to buy all the components to build a kit from scratch. This is the standard kit, i wont bother listing the components unless someone wants me to. but i used as much as i could from walmart then dicks sports then the local outdoor store. I would rather do this in the reverse shopping order but i was trying to build it as inexpensive as possible. I was shocked to realize the total bill was 400.00 dollars. Now being prepared is priceless but a fifteen pound pack costing four hundred dollars? Does this sound right with you guys and girls? How much did it cost you to build your BOB? At 400.00 dollars and fifteen pounds thats 26.666 dollars per pound.

I have to confess that my b.o.b. is still evolving as i find new and better, or older and better items/solutions. I am on a tight budget so I go for as many multi-use items as I can. This past summer I think I only spent $50.00 or so on the b.o.b. and some of that was for replacing out of date meds and food stuffs.

Really, there are no night vision goggles or saber light swords in this. Just swedish steel and cotton balls with jelly, thnings like that, nothing crazy just the recommend stuff.

I would be interested to actually see a comprehensive list of the stuff in your pack, along with the cost of each item. Maybe then we can see whether the price is reasonable or not, or even come up with cheaper solutions.

Btw, what is BOB again? Is it "Bug Out Bag?"

Yes and mine also doubles as my general camping/backpacking pack.

Don't feel bad about the cost of your kit. Mine is well over $1000.00. I included a couple pic's of it. If it works for you then its worth it.:)

Jim, my BOBs are up there at approx $800. When I replace my SA M6 and add a couple more Celox and Military one handed 4" and 6" bandages it will wind up being Around $1300. Well worth the piece of mind for my wife and myself. Actually that's very cheap for two lives. That's also for much more time than 3 days. I don't know the kind of disaster it will be, nor do I know how long it will be before the disaster is under control, to my satisfaction.

Cost? Every kit, bag, piece of camping gear I have cost me 52 years. Some of the stuff is new, some of it old. It has been a lifetime of experiences, successes, failures that have caused me to end up with the things I rely on. As far as $$$, add the weapons and the price goes up just a wee bit. Spending $400 seems much better than the trade off.

I did not add in a weapon or the cost of the poncho and blanket this would add about 300.00. so the true cost would Be 700.00 These are just items i would be carrying anyway. At least i feel better about how much i have spent on my kits. Sgtdraino it is both a BOB and a three day campng kit. the more i use
it t he more i can depend on it. If you really want i will break the kit down but it sounds like a lot of work and I'm basically very lazy. But if you want i will do it.

I'm planning a 3 day trek this December and I will have maybe a cost of maybe, oh he ll nothing.

I get alot of my stuff at flea markets and yard sales, plus some stuff I've had for ever.

Tent, 20 bucks back in 86.
Mil. poncho, 5 bucks back in 94.
Whitney blanket, 5 bucks at a yard sale about 10 years ago. Yeh, I lucked out.
Pack, a buck from a yard sale, wife picked it up for me.
Folding stove, 50 cents, yard sale, brand new.
Misc. first aid, comb. of many years of supplies.
Knife, bowie, a gift.
Bino's, free, stole them from my wife. Her dad gave them to her 10 years ago.
Mil. green wool blanket, a buck, yard sale.
4 canteens, one canteen cup, cost 3 bucks, yard sale.
Web belt, free, from grandfather, yeh, it still fits around my waist. Just barely.

44 Colt Army, free, got it in a trade for a Great Plains 54, got the 54 in a trade for a bow I made, the stave for the bow was a gift.


Now, if I go primitive, the only cost is the canvas.


Come on December.

Not going to be deer hunting, rather hog and small game. Also, there is a year round trout stream. I'm not taking a pole, going to get one like ol Jerimiah Johnson.LOL.

I'm torn between going primitive and modern. The primitive is more cost effective like FVR said but I really the modern "wonder" gadgets.
I still haven't figured out which pack I want for my modern stuff but I do have a few ideas.

Da#! Once again i finally get a three day weekend and the weather is not going to cooperate. Forecast is for rain and in the higher elevations snow. I like winter camping but i prefer to do it in the winter. Work has been too hard lately to work hard and be cold and wet on my time off. I was looking for some easy time, build a lean-to get a fire going and practice making cordage. Maybe next weekend.

The biggest decission for me, is the tent, the footwear, and the pack.

Thanks, now you've gone and done it. Maybe I'll go the primitive route. I have switched up the 44 for a single action 22 mag revolver. It's lighter, easier to carry, and the rounds are much easier to carry.

As far as the footwear, I am not a moc. wearer anymore. I need support. I wear a pair of Carolina Loggers everyday in steel toe, so I went out and found a pair of comfy Justin Loggers without the steel toe, they give me the support and I could walk for days.

Primitive clothing depends on the wearther. If it's super cold, I go prim. because of the wool leggins and pull over shirt, top them off with a pair of leather leggins, and a thick buckskin pull over coat, and I can handle the cold.

This trip, I may just go, half and half.
