Hi y'all...

So...we are buying a revolver.
The question is which one.

Remy - both are good choices. You may also want to take a look at the Tarus Model 850 (a little friendlier on the wallet). But it will ultimately boil down to how it feels in her hand, and how much you want to spend.

Pump shotgun... 22LR is a waste of time..

S&W.

It's been the preferred when wheel guns were the norm. You could buy used and have a good gunsmith check it out. Most were not used much. S&W will hold it's value.

In Brazil I was faced with the choice between a high capacity .380 or a .38 special revolver. I went with the revolver for out-of-the-box reliability and more powerful ammo available (125 +P+ JHP).

Here you have more variety between brands, I was stuck with Taurus and Rossi.

I settled on a 3 inch six shot Stainless Rossi. For a home defense gun you don't really need the conceal-ability advantage of the five shot J-frame snub. (more on that later). I went for the 3 inch because it "could be concealed" if I had to but it also had a full length ejector rod and a full six shot cylinder. I had actually looked at several of the Taurus 7 shot snubs but they had timing problems. Three inch revolvers just seem to balance well.

That said, my second gun in Brazil was a J-frame. I find it very convenient when I want to have a gun in my pocket for answering late night rings at our gate and other such times when having a gun in my hand is a prudent thing to do. You may not want to carry outside of the home but the J-frames are really good for carry inside the home as well. We have lived under two different credible death threats there in our ten years and at times either I had the J-frame on me or my wife did when I was gone. The three inch/six shot revolver is a more capable gun but it is larger and heavier to carry around under light clothing.

My Brazil HD revolver. I have carried this gun concealed, even on the street on a few occasions but it is a big gun. I have a pair of jeans folded up near the bed that has a belt, holster and two jet-loaders ready to go. Sometimes I have to wake up in the middle of the night and go turn off the house alarm. I don't do that in my skivvies.

I can't carry in Brazil but this gun has spent a lot of time on me at home.

This is my S&W Model 19-5, black Teflon finish. I love this gun. it is a .357 magnum and I don't find it hard to shoot with full power loads. Mac

I've got a S&W mod 19 too. It feels right. I've heard there are problems with using it for 357 so, I've backed off to 38 spl.

I've had a problem w/ the 38 Taurus that required disassembly. So, my confidence is not 100%.

I have owned two Taurus 85 revolvers. My first one developed timing problems and I sent it in on their lifetime warrenty. They sent it back in 100% good shape. I traded it in on a Glock 19, but I missed it.

I spotted another Taurus 85 at a friends gun shop for $150. He leveled with me, it had been given an action job and had a light strike problem and a defect that allowed the firing pin to drag a little. The trigger was awesome but it did have the occasional light strike. I sent it back to Taurus and they sent it back in 100% condition. Everyone who fires it does a double take to make sure I really did say Taurus not Smith, it's really smooth.

Taurus does put out the occasional lemon but in my experience they make good on their guns. Interestingly enough they don't offer the same warranty in Brazil where they have no competition. Mac

Edited to Add: My brother had to send his Glock 19 back for a cracked frame, bottom line, guns break eventually.

I have a ruger sp101 and it's great. The down side is it's heavy and new they're around $500.00. Charter Arms also makes a great .38 and it's cheaper. It too has a lifetime warrenty. I would not hesitate to carry either off-duty, but it really is about which one you and your wife will be comfortable with.

Remy,

Ya need to do a little digging and find a "Lady Remington." It is a small framed, 5 shot, 357 that is made for the shooting woman. From what I've heard and seen, it is a great small hand revolver.

Finding one is the problem.

Another good option in S&W is the J frame airweight. These are really light. You can also get them in hammerless style which make them very good for concealed carry in a purse (no snags when drawing weapon)

You could find a gun store that also has a range and try various models.

I agree with rebel. You must go to a gun store and look. There's a lot of real pretty handguns out there. The one you want will fit your wifes hand if it fits and feels good in her hand BUY THAT ONE

My first ex shot my ruger better, must be a woman thing. The 19 may be hard to come by, S&W discontinued it a few years back. My ruger has the beast tamer package from Jack Wiegand. It's great but Jack doesn't do it anymore. My gun dealer friend knows a company that does the same package now, if you're interested let me know and I'll get the info.

I had a "Lady Smith" until someone talked me into selling it. It was a great little revolver. I highly recommend it.

Remy, you may not want my input, but I'd go with the .357 Mag. since it'll also chamber & fire .38 cal.. However it might be a bit heavy for the Mrs..

The SP101 is a fantastic revolver. Accurate, reliable, tough as nails.

Love my Colt Python .357. That gun has taken more abuse in the jungle than any gun should. But it still works great, never had a problem.

Remy, Ruger use to make the sp101 in 9mm. It's hard to find but you'd be able to keep your ammo cost down not having to buy 9mm & .38. They also started making it chambered in .327 mag. It's basicly a .32 magnum.
Just a thought.

I've got a 10 in a 38 s&w. Nice piece, 4" barrel, fixed sights and pretty accurate. The only problem is it's 38s&w. Not 38spl. Ammo is special order.

If " off duty" makes a difference. Carry what matters while on duty. Wouldn't that be more conservative. That's what I do. In that case, H&K.

Edit: Yea, it's not a revolver and that's the question.

Yea, I carry a Glock 23 off duty, but Remy's looking for a revolver. If I had to, I'd carry the sp101 or Charter Arms.
Glad I don't have to...

That's why the Glock, that's what we're issued, only it's the 22.

I agree, I have been carrying the Glock 23 for over 10 years now. It ain't pretty but it goes bang when I pull the trigger. The .40 S&W is a very effective round and easy to come by. I consider it as reliable as a revolver plus it holds 7 more rounds.

I have a ye olde ancient 4" S&W Military and Police Revolver in .38 Special (what is now known as the Model 10), and it is extremely accurate and easy to shoot. Still 100% reliable, even though it is around 80 years old!

I have been looking at hand guns for CC when out on trails and for fun in the back yard. I particularly don't like the feel of revolvers, but if something happens, I don't want to take the time to chamber a semi-auto pistol. Yes, the one I was looking at only shot 5 times, but I don't plan on sticking around to shoot more than twice...

I swear by my SW model 625. Nothing makes me happier than moon clips loaded with 45acp. When you really care, you send only the best.

Remy, the beast tamer is the comp package Wiegand use to do on the sp101. Barrel ported, chambers chamfered, bead blast, polished trigger and hammer. It is like shooting a .32, even with full load .357 magnums.

38 S&W 4"bbl rated +P and the heaviest she can handle (absorbs the felt recoil). My wife has a S&W Mod. 60 in house, semi wadcutter loads, not +P. She is 5'2" at 115 lbs. Keeps a Walther PPK/S 380 in her car. Don't need anything under 4" bbl for home, a lot is personal choice, what feels good to her and is comfy and controllable in DA plus ability to "handle" a handgun (your decision). My personal opinion. My wife was taught to aim or point to center mass and empty the gun if necessary, minimum of two shots. Don't bother with any ammo except semi- wadcutters, at a short distance, opinion again hollow points or personal defense won't expand. Don't use ball except cheap practice.

Hey remy, just got the new issue of combat handguns. Don't know how much bang for the buck you're looking for, but the sp101 comes in .45LC now. Just a little food for though.

Very effective gun. I've also carried one for at least ten years.

For wheel guns, I used to carry the S&W Model 66 (Model 19 in stainless). This has a four inch barrel, though it is made in a 2.5 inch barrel. Very good ergonomics, but even in the 2.5 inch barrel it would be a much larger gun than the Glock.

RBB, those 66's are great, aren't they? I carried one for a couple years myself, but it was the 2.5.
