I just saw this show for the first time this week. What a nutjob. He takes loads of unnecessary risks.

The article above details how he sets up scenes, or spends the night in hotels.

You mean you don't really do a karate chop to kill a rabbit????

When I was a kid, Mom raised rabbits. When it was time to butcher the rabbits, thats how I killed them. One good chop behind the head.

Now I've caught more then my share of jacks, cotton tail and snow shoe's in snares. I have only come on one in my whole life that was still alive.

I am shocked! Shocked I tell ya!!!!! that a television show that wants to capture ratings and and audience would stage stuff to do so. <<<walks away mumbling - shocked I say>>>>

Gray Wolf

I think he could get super ratings if he would show us how he doesn't need a parachute to jump out of a small plane at 3000'.... I'd watch! :D

What was his motivation? Too teach, survive or be rich and famous.

The (shock jock) of survival.

It got him where he thinks he needs to be. In that he succeeded. However, it came at a price. Your disapproval is proof.

I find it quite arrogant of him catering about eating raw reptile when he has the means (the tools, and most likely the fuel) to make a fire and cook the meat to reduce the risk of getting salmonella or any other parasite or harmful bacteria. It's all for show. People are going to start doing that in there own back yard, and thats a no no. I know you can eat raw reptile meat in emergencies, but lets face it, he doesn't neccesarily need the food (why snake?) in the seven days he's walking about and he's not in an emergency. If he wants do to stuff like that he should go in there starting with just his bare hands. I bet when he gets off the show he's at the least terribly sick.

Yes, It's all for show and I have stated many times CAUTION about Gryils show. Les's show is not as dangerous, as he is always warning the viewers about being careful, and he is more realistic than Bear (and doesn't stay in a Holiday Inn at night). But, both shows are trying to show how you could survive with a minimal amount of equipment. I will bet that 90% of the members here have on them a knife or a multi-tool most of the time. Les even showed one week, the behind the scenes of what takes place to make each episode.

Jericho117
10-08-2008, 09:03 PM
True, I don't think any of us are better then them. I sure as hell couldn't pull through a survival situation without tools as easily as I could with my knife. But thats usually all I carry.

If any of you have the first season on dvd or on tape and have the episode where he is in the Rockies. There is a scene where he makes a rabbit stick, comes across a rabbit and kills and eats the rabbit. Well if you look closely, it appears that the rabbit is staked out. Besides, getting that close to a rabbit in an open area with cover close by is next to impossible.

I thought that I remembered somebody posting a youtube vid on the rabbit scene that showed how it was staged, including all of the misses with throwing the rabbit stick. It may still be around, but I noticed that many of the youtube vids exposing ole Bear have been removed. Guess the lawyers got involved - "I don't care that the video clearly and convincingly proves that my client is faking much of what he does.

Believe it or not, I saw my first survival show a week ago. I was over a friends house and his son was watching it. I don't know which show it was, but the fool tried to get honey from a hive and got stung in the face. He had an allergic reaction and his whole head swelled up. Is this the same guy?

Gray Wolf

Yep, that's Bear Gryils, Man vs Wild show!

pgvoutdoors
10-10-2008, 02:47 PM
I've had people ask me questions about things they see on TV, sometimes it seems a bit out there. I saw that episode, and thought it was a bit stupid to go after honey if you were allergic to bee stings. I myself am allergic to bee stings so I know of what I speak. And, my favorite food is honey too! NOT worth the risk!!!

I just realized what the Topic of this thread really says. "Bear Gryills is a fake".
No HE IS NOT, his show Man vs Wild is dangerous.
The problem is that there is no one here on this sight or 99.999% of people alive, that could do what he has done 'collectively'.

The youngest person to climb Mount Everest (never done at that age before or since)!
British Special Forces (for 3 years)!
Pass the training tests for the French Foreign Legion (harder than any military tests anywhere)!
Para-Sail over the top of Mount Everest (never done before or since)!

He is a very unique individual. But his show Man vs Wild is dangerous.

GW - Here's my list of achievements. Very close to Bear:

The youngest person to climb Mount Everest (never done at that age before or since)!

I'm saving up to be the oldest person to climb Mount Everest. Hang around. More to come on this.

British Special Forces (for 3 years)!

Jamaican Special Forces for 20 minutes.

Pass the training tests for the French Foreign Legion (harder than any military tests anywhere)!

Passed a marble I inadvertently swallowed when I was a kid.

Para-Sail over the top of Mount Everest (never done before or since)!

Went careening a$$ over tea kettle down the side of a ski slope once. I've never done it since and have no plans to do it ever again.

Rick that's quite a resume, you should start your own survival show.

Gray Wolf

Gotta ask,
Rick why did you have a tea kettle on a ski slope??
That's it! That's where you went wrong!

Rick
10-10-2008, 04:36 PM
It was the strangest place to find one. I was sailing along just fine then tripped over the darned thing. The rest is history.

trax
10-10-2008, 04:38 PM
GW makes a good point, you're supposed to have the "unpaid help" waiting at the bottom of the slope with your tea or possibly in your case, Rick, first aid kit, nevertheless...never should have had that kettle with you.

The way I heard it was that Bear was looking at a friends "Para-Sail" when his jacket got caught just as it took off with Bear hanging on for dear life screaming like a girl. When he landed there were all the news cameras & reporters, so he just smiled, posed, and let people assume that he really tried to that on his own.

However, just for the record, Street Magician David Blaine also went through the Foreign Legion training.

I think I got Rick beat, I mean who, besides yer old Sarge, drinks out of a "wide-mouth, hard-plastic Nalgene Bottle and laughs in the face of death from Cancer"?

Who, besides Trax, Beo, & several others have been "dissed" by Army Ranger Rick" & lived to tell about it?

Who has had his school bus totaled out by an oncoming Semi-tractor, both going 55 mph (at least) in opposite directions and have gone back to work right afterwords?

Who else has been put on TheFreakinBear's "Crap-List"?

Though I gotta admit, I can't compete with a "Twinkie" suit!:D

OK, I read this article where a guy at the camp said people saw him flying in the vicinty of the peak but not actually over it and a lot of people saying that the winds up there would kill a para-sailer, no way you could control the thing etc. But if you saw it brother, I stand corrected.

Gray Wolf
10-11-2008, 04:56 PM
They had small fan type motors that were strapped to their backs. These were his friends prototypes. The Discovery Channel Special showed them working on the motors. They almost had to cancel the attempt when the second motor wouldn't start. But it was all shown on the D. C. Special (the good and the bad).

Mountain guide Dan Mazur said Grylls literally landed on top of him. It turned out that may have been Gilo Cardozo. "A fault in Gilo’s machine forced him to abort only 1,000 feet below the summit and he had to glide back to safety,” their home team reported.

Logistics outfitter: "Vital for the future goodwill that claims are accurate"

Yesterday another email arrived, this time from Nigel Gifford at the UK High & Wild Group. It read:
"While I do not know what Bear Grylls has said in answer to your questions about his parajet flight in Solu Khumbu, I can confirm that it was me who was issued (and was responsible for) the permit for this flight from the Nepalese authorities and it was my company along with Explore Himalaya that positioned all the logistics."

"The permit was NOT to fly over Everest and this did not happen. The approved flight plan, which was adhered to by both pilots was to take off from the area of Pheriche, and to stay south of the Nuptse/Lhotse wall. Hope that this helps clear the matter up."

So it is I that stands corrected! But what he did was still a first. As was Gilo Cardozo's new machine.
The Discovery Channels show was very deceiving. But that still took a lot of guts! Those motors were untested, and they flew to 29,000 ft +.

From GKN Mission Everest

The Mission was completed in May. The dramatic image above was taken by Bear's on board helmet camera. (below)

It captures the drama of his flight which took him higher than Mount Everest through the Himalayas.

Visit Bear's website where you can find more information on the flight including the technical data showing that Bear and Gilo surpassed all existing altitude records for powered paragliding. Both for absolute altitude and take-off altitude.

There is also the GPS data downloaded from Bear’s Garmin E-Trex GPS system and the transposed Google Earth imagery of his flight path right up until the GPS system freezes at 25,005 ft.

The raw data is available to download in Excel Spreadsheet format consisting of the Raw data taken from the GPS Unit.

You can also download the Google Earth Map created via the GPS Unit (You will need Google Earth to view this). The documents track Bear until the GPS unit Froze at 25,005ft (8.88km)
