Poll: Best Overall Methods of Making Fire

What do you think are the best overall methods of making a fire in survival situations? Things to take into account would be ease of method, availability of needed materials, and how many fires your method can start before it is "used up" and must be replaced.

BTW I wish we could have more than 10 options!

While all of the methods that you have listed will start a fire (some take practice), because of the way you worded your question.....if I'm in a survival situation and need fire and can reach into my pocket for a bic lighter, that's what I'm doing. The simpilest way in which to start a fire in a "survival situation" (read life and death, not camping) makes the most sense. There will be enough items on my "things to do" list already. Hopefully I will have my back ups with me should the need arise.

the most reliable, overall, is the ferrocerium rod. Not the easiest, but if I had just one item that would be it.

i agree with crash. if im in a survival situation and all i have to do to start a fire is take out my lighter, then thats what i would do. not only is it reliable, but it is also fast. in survival making fire in a timely manner can mean life or death.

Lighter or matches, if I need a fire in a hurry, would like to have one or the other.

Survival situation requires simplicity with least amount of wasted energy so yea the lighter or matches if available

I would go with the Ferrocerium Rod, One that can be used one handed, Like the Blast Match

I think these are the most reliable, durable and long lasting of the methods.

I'm with Tony and RR, a good Ferrocerium Rod will give you over 10,000 fires, no lighter will do that, nor do I want to carry 10K matches.

No disagreements with the Ferrocerium Rod. The way in which the question was asked was why I suggested lighter. I don't wander into the woods ever without at least 4 methods to start a fire plus several tinder sources.

When I'm in the bush I have on me; 1 ferro-rod w/striker, 1 wind proof lighter, 1 pill bottle of matches, 2 types of tender (paraffin cotton balls, slivers of fat-wood). For some reason Bic lighters don't work well in the extreme cold or when they get wet, so I don't carry one.

Well I always like rubbing two tourists together until they spark, but you're talking about a survival situation, so....yeah what Crash said. Klkak is sure right about those bic lighters though, no dang good in the serious cold.

first time i went to the bush with bow he had me take apart my backback to keep this on track i'll just cover the firestarting i had two zippo lighters,can of zipppo fluid and extra flints a film cannister of cotton balls a jar of petrolium jelly, waterproof cannister with matches, and my swedish firesteel oh yeah my bic in my front pocket,

that was then this is now on my belt my every waking moment no matter where i go is my swedish fire steel, i have gained confidence and competence in my skills at starting a fire with this one tool. period end of story.

Swedish fire steel is a variation on the ferrocerium rod, yes?

I always layer my fire pouch contents, matches, ferro rod, and re-added a butane lighter of late.
several tinder styles also.
in the pack is the top block for a fire drill along with some leather laces.

Yes, it's a high quality ferrocerium rod. All ferrocerium rods are not made equal.

That is sound advice WE. Fire is so important up here that carrying multiple methods of starting a fire is sound also. As long as they are not all in the same place. I carry fire makings in my pants pocket, survival vest, coat pocket, pack and on my ATV. I also have it in my trapping bag and life jacket. The fire kits are very small.

My main fire maker is typically a Bic. I carry a regular sized Bic in my belt pouch sized kit and another mini in my canteen cover pouch. I also carry a ferro rod in my belt pouch kit.

In my Altoids tin in my pocket I carry a Sparklite and tinder with a few waterproofed matches. I usually have a Doan tool on me as well.

In really cold or wet conditions I like to carry a trioxene bar as well for true hypothermia situations. Mac

Polls and questions are hard because folks differ in interpretation. What you think was a straight easy question will be interpreted as something different.

As for your question. What I would use would depend on the situation and interpretation of the question.

For myself I would have a lighter, matches, mag glass , and steel.

Yes, I voted for lighter and firesteel as the two best. Lihters give instant flame and 90% of the time they work just fine. The firesteel will most likely cover that 10% of extreme circumstances when the lighter goes down. Mac

I chose Ferro rod over a lighter because a lighter can fail from being too cold , Wet, Leaks or the mechanism simply fails,, all of the above has happened to me.

Bic and ferrocerium rod for me. I do use matches as a convenience when car camping but hiking and backpacking those are the two I carry.

One way I never see mentioned but is very common amoung people around here that spend a lot of time camping out for extended periods building a lot of fires is a propane torch. One bottle seems to last forever and there is no dinking around when you want that first cup of coffee in the morning.
