Hello all,
We are currently in the Yukon Territory on our way to Alaska as many of you know. All is well and we've logged over 6400 miles since leaving Colorado July 20 something. Crossing the border wasn't a hassle at all, we'll see about coming over the other way though. :)
The Alaska Canada highway isn't as bad as most everyone makes it out to be. The road has been paved and we only hit a couple of stretches of gravel. We did blow a trailer tire out somewhere on a mountain pass in the rain at night in BC. I didn't even notice until until we stopped a pull out for the night. It was probably blown for several miles as it was completely shredded and most of it was wound around the axle and I had to cut it off with my cordless Dewalt sawzall the next morning. I'm glad we have a trailer with tandem axles!
We saw lots of Caribou in Northern BC, not to mention a few moose and black bears and some stone sheep. There is almost no one going north this time of year except truckers and a few locals. A few folks coming back from Alaska etc.
It's nice to have the road to ourselves, the leaves are in their fall splendor and the air is crisp. We need to be extra watchful of fuel stops, as many of the smaller stations are closed for the season. We carry and extra 5gal in the truck just in case.
We hope to cross the border sometime tomorrow afternoon and be in the states again.
Some survival stuff we had to use along the way has been out Katadyn gravity fed water filter as most of Northern BC has terrible water out here. We carry extra jugs and fill when we can. Lots of minerals and some of the places to get water have been unsanitary at best. We would have been better off getting it from the many rivers or lakes.
We used some tools for fixing stuff and cutting off the old trailer tire from the axle. Our knives and Leatherman tools never leave our sides. I just wear my Mora knife hanging off my belt and no one has given it a second look. Gorilla tape is your friend! Lots of paper towels for checking oil cleaning windshields etc.
Oh, Angie's parents wanted us to "be safe" and gave us a TOM TOM gps deal for your car. Total junk! It has been wrong more that it has been right. I have threatened to throw it out the window on too many occasions to count. I'm glad we double or triple check our maps. If we followed that worthless piece of junk we'd be in Singapore by now! We are going to mail it back to them when we get to AK. Just FYI
That's it for now... ;)
