Great Survivor or Just One Unlucky Dude?

I just read an article on Rulon Gardner. Rulon is a Gold Medal Olympic wrestler. He has survived a plane crash in Lake Powell that forced him to swim for more than an hour in 44F water and survived the night without shelter or fire in 28F air temperature. He was found by a fisherman the next morning that just "happened along".

He was stranded in the Idaho wilderness because of a snowmobile accident and had to spend the night in -25F weather without shelter. He lost a toe to frostbite in that mishap.

He survived a motorcycle crash when a car plowed into him and he had an arrow impaled in his stomach in a show-and-tell incident.

If Rulon invites you along on any kind of adventure I'd suggest turning him down.

How can a single person accumulate so many events like these? Kinda like the person who gets struck by lightening eight times.

Quite sometime back I wrote this from the book: "Survival In The Outdoors" by Byron Dalrymple. Does any of this remind you of the guy Rick has mentioned?

"WHO IS 'ACCIDENT PRONE'?
I am sure everyone has heard of what are known as 'accident prone" individuals. Are you one? Have you ever thought carefully about this?

"I have a close friend who is an avid and very experienced outdoorsman. Once when I was hunting deer with him he fell in rocks, smashed the stock of his rifle and cut his palm so badly that stitches had to be taken. He was hurrying. On another occasion he shot a rifle that had a bullet from a handload stuck in the chamber-it had come loose-and he rammed another home atop it and blew up the gun. By a great miracle he was not killed, but he was seriously injured. He has fallen off a trail horse onto rocks, been hospitalized with pneumonia after being caught in a blizzard while trying to get out of the wilderness back country. These are just a few of his accidents.

So his family calls him "accident prone". Even his doctor has sagely agreed that this man has "it" always hanging over him. But I'll tell you something. I have been with this man on a number of occasions under wilderness conditions. And I won't ever go again, regardless of our friendship. The term "accident prone" is simply an excuse.

There is no proof that any man is headed for continuous "accidents" because of his genes. The man I used as an illustration IS accident prone, you bet. And I'll tell you why He is incautious, reckless, inept in judgement, overconfident, has too quick a temper, and, though he is a delightful companion most times, he totally lacks good sense and good judgement."

Mr. D. goes on with some very good insights, but I think we can see a pattern emerging where "accident prone" folks just need to learn some life saving habits.

That is good insight, Sarge. I remember hearing about Rulon several years ago. Specifically, his snow mobile accident. He went into the back country with no survival gear and no cell phone in winter in an area he had never been before with no map and no one knew the route he was taking. The reason he lost a toe (as I remember the story) is the he got his boots wet trying to cross a stream.

Several years ago I traveled to Nanoose Bay, British Columbia. The Navy has a torpedo testing range there. I arrived bright and early on a Sunday morning to work on the satellite navigation system on one of the submarines using the testing range. When I got there I was told the submarine would be out all day on the range. At this particular range the exercise torpedoes (they float at the end of their run) were retrieved by helicopter. I was hanging around the cafeteria when the pilot of the helicopter came in. We struck up a conversation. After about fifteen minutes he asked me if I wanted to go on the next run since I didn’t have anything to do or any place to go. I suited up, and off we went. As we’re preparing to take off I was talking with the flight engineer. He said that he was new and had just started about a month earlier. The guy he replaced abruptly quit one day…..but his bosses saw it coming. Seems that he was “accident prone” or just bad luck. He was involved in three crashes in six months. One ran out of gas, one hit a power line, but the third is what caused him to quit. The crew was delivering explosives to a mining site. After dropping of their load and having just lifted off, he noticed something rolling around the cargo area. It was a small package of explosives that had come out of one of the crates. He told the pilot to hover while he got it off the chopper. Grabbed it, tossed it out……….hit the rotor……crash number three.

If I remember correctly, Mr. Gardner upset some Russian wrestler in the 2000 Olympics. There was an article about him in NG Adventure magazine about a year or so ago (I've only had the subscription for a year and a half). I think some people don't think about what they're getting into, and they don't have contingency plans.

Yeah, I'd be happy to go adventuring with this guy, if something crappy's going to happen, it's going to happen to him.
