Has anyone seen the TV documentary Alone in the Wilderness, about Dick Proenneke? In the early 60's Dick moved to the Aleutian peninsula and built a cabin using only hand tools, then lived there until 1998. I hadn't heard of him until last night, when I caught the latter half of the movie on PBS.

He was a master carpenter and craftsman, and seeing him build the cabin up from scratch was pretty amazing. I'm not sure I'd go for the 50 below winters, but I really envy his skills and dedication!

I have that DVD. He was a special kinda man. He was old school and tough as nails. Most importantly: "He did not go unprepared". My best friends dad was also a friend of Mr. Proenneke.

Hopeak, Do know Ted Carlson or Dick Person?

Just curious, they are a couple of sourdoughs that I know. Ted is my neighbor and good friend. I don't think I've ever known a more generous man.
