No end to the excitement

We're really getting spoiled this year with animal observations! My boyfriend was out in the boat the other day and watched two black bears mate on the shore of the lake! He could hardly believe his eyes - for one thing, it's pretty late in the year for that kind of thing. We guess that if a sow didn't mate in June/July, that she comes into heat again later. Anyone know more about this??
So anyway, there they were, a brown coloured sow and a black boar, all lovey dovey, play fighting, wrestling, nipping each other and rearing up on their hind legs and finally mating. My boyfriend said it was like watching a nature documentary. And stupid me had stayed at home :(

The boars will kill the sows cubs, and when she stops lactating, she will again come into estrus. Now because of I think it is called delayed conception, or delayed fertilization all bears a still born in roughly the same week, around Jan. 10 to 20Th.

My guess is she had cubs, and lost them. However she could have lost them in a river crossing, or to wolves, or they may have been sickly, who knows.

That is the word I was looking for Delayed Gestation....You will have to research it, but foggy memory is the embryo start growing in Oct. about the time they hibernate.
