If the gov would only stop bailing out the dishonest/clueless leaders of industry, then companies would stop hiring them, and things would stabilize. Of course, if the gov does not bail out these guys, there will be short term economic problems. Remember, if the US (economy) sneezes, the rest of the world gets a cold.
