I found the rock in these pictures on a small Island in Prince William Sound Alaska.
What do you think?
1. Is it something or is it nothing?
2. What could it have been used for?
3. How old do you think it is?
4. Who might have made it?
I have no real clue. Only an Idea. In a week or so I will be taking it to a friend who teaches at the University of Alaska to have it identified.

Looks like something that could have been used for (or can be used for) grinding grain. Somebody may even suggest an oil lamp.

No it was not found by running water. It was found right at the high tide line on a nicely sheltered beach.

The smoothness of the stone may be nothing more than being tumbled in the surf. It is interesting looking though.

...a battery operated rock...nope, never seen one of those before, although I think that particular rock may have fell out of the head of one of our Numpty's; perhaps TheFreakinBear....:eek::D:rolleyes::cool:
Two of the coolest things I think I ever found was surf tumbled glass and a surf tumbled brick. They were as smooth as that rock. But it sure looks hand made. Great keepsake even if it's nothing more than a rock.

I think what you really have there is an aleut soup spoon. He or she was probably pretty upset when it came up missing too. Eating hot soup with your bare hands hurts.:eek:

Stone is too small for grinding grain. Perhaps it was used to grind small amounts of herbs or something. You know, herbage, dude. Righteous ganja.

How could I remember it was your birthday when I never new when your birthday was. My meds don't make me forget stuff. They help me to be what society deems normal.

Now about the rock. When I talked to the person at UAA she seemed to think that the rock is a small "seal fat oil lamp". She asked to examine it and I agreed to let her. I'll let everyone know what she says. regardless, it is a cool rock.
I sort of imagine some really ticked off Inuit walking around the beach looking for his seal fat lamp in the dark after his son let it burn out.
"In my day you didn't have the luxury of a seal fat lamp. You had to hold the seal fat and the wick in your mouth and hope to God you didn't burn your nose! I had to walk to school that way...and home."
Son mumbles "Yeah, I know, uphill both ways."
"What?!"

This is a reply from the Archaeologist I sent the rock to:
The rock is an oil lamp -- difficult to say how
old, but probably late prehistoric. Sometimes similar artifacts have
been classified as "ocher grinders" but these were generally smaller.
IMO. Regardless of what it was used for or how old it is, it's a cool find.

When exactly was the late prehistoric period?
It's a time that is also referred to as the pre-contact period. Generally it thought to run from about 1000 A.D. (give or take) to the time of European settlers arriving in North America. So it is potentially as old as some trees in the Florida Keys.
