From Backpacker Magazine:

Snail slime contains an amino acid that behaves like adrenalin. The boost is immediate. Rabbit pellets are rich in wild chamomile and are a natural sedative if the snail rush is a little too much.

Rescue dogs saved more lost hiker in national parks last year than PLBs.

Your cell phone emits a digital ping that can help searchers find you, so turn it on if you get lost.

Bees, wasps and hornets kill 10 times as many Americans a year as snakes do. (You folks in Canada are sure lucky!)

America's #1 wilderness killer is unroped falls.

Most lost hikers are found within 24 hours (Whew! That sure beats 72, huh?)

If you fall into a raging river, pack and all, you should face downstream and ride it out.

Bataan Death March survivors walked 80 miles without food or water in 100F plus temps. (Sort of makes our aches and pains meaningless, doesn't it?)

The best thing to eat when you're suffering from mild hypothermia is pizza (Hey! I don't make this stuff up). You want carbs and fat.

More hikers die from exposure than from wildlife attacks, rockfall, avalanches, floods, and lightening combined. (Remember the rule of 3s!!!).

Most avalanches are triggered by your weight.

Altitude sickness typically hits above 8000 feet.

The old adage of following water if you're lost is NOT true. It does not necessarily lead to civilization.

Here are the mountains with the most human deaths (ranked from most to least) Hood, Washington, Rainier, McKinley, Longs Peak, Sunflower (Sunflower is in Kansas and is generally only risky during Tornado season).

I was talking to a man that ran the visitors center on Mt. Rainier about 10 years ago. We were talking about all the folks that have died trying to climb the mountain. I suggested a way to remedy that problem. Build a road to the top. He said the mountain had been surveyed for that purpose but the decision was made to leave it the way it was. I guess it would have put all those rescuers out of work.

I got that issue of BP mag. The survival issue. Those facts that rick posted might come in handy. Once I find a snail i'm gonna try that. I wonder if slugs would work.

Yeah!! The second I read that snail-slime thing I perked right up. That's so amazing. I wonder if it actually gives you a big boost of power and if it's just like a coffe or something. I mean they really don't leave that much slime, it'd have to be really potent to give you a big boost of energy.

You can find that and a whole lot more survival information in the October, 2008 issue. It's on the stands now.

In life you have to lick a lot of snail before you....never mind:D

If snail slime contains all that adrenalin, then why are snails so damn slow? Something to think about ain't it? :D

And something like 30-40% died from malnutrition before reaching the prison camps. Of those who made it to the prison camps, 90% of prisoners under Japanese "care" died.

Well, you are close. It wasn't just malnutrition but disease, starvation, dehydration, heat prostration, untreated wounds, and wanton execution.

Still, it doesn't diminish the fact that those making it to Camp O'Donnell accomplished an incredible feat of survival. I'd be very hard pressed today to endure the same conditions and survive. (I'd like to think I could but ???). And that was just the start of things to come for them.....

I thought I heard somewhere that snail slime is toxic and/or has bad germs. Does it not?

Just think....the snail slime, as with the fad of licking toads to get a high......somebody had to be firsrt. I'll bet that there was alcohol or some other decision altering drugs involved.

Guy 1: Dude - what are you doing?

Guy 2: I'm snorting a line of snail slime.

Gut 1: Why?

Guy 2: Spilled my beer in it and don't want to waste any.

Reading the fine print in that magazine article would have let in on the joke. As you were grading your answers it said the snail slime thing was "true". BUT....at the end it said something like "subtract 25 points from your score if you bought that B.S. about snail slime".

That was the only joke/incorrect answer in the quiz.

I posted an intro. Thanks for the shout-out. I'm a noob to survival forums, but know my way around the wild and the topic of survival pretty well. The forum topics and members look very interesting here, and there's PLENTY of knowledge obviously. I just looked at one topic with new activity since my first post yesterday (bow and drill discussion), as I have a few bow/drill rigs and figured I might be able to add something. Nope...those who already chimed in obviously know what they're talking about. Lots of good advice and info here.
