Get a tape or cd of wilderness sounds and noises. Play them softly at home while drifting off to sleep. Soon it will become a natural sound for you and you will look forward to it.
****Disclaimer***** I've got no earthly idea if that will work, but it sounded good.
Naaah, you're just a big wimp. Not really but you left yourself open by asking so I had to go there. Only joking. I have no idea what's keeping you awake so I'll wait for Dr Remy to weigh in on this one. Dr? Paging Dr. Remy....

Actually what it is could stem off of watching to much " Cops " at night.
you really need to keep that to a strict minimum before bed.
P.S I heard that the boogeyman actually comes out at 10pm so you can beat him by going to bed at 9pm...

Nothing really like the sounds of nature. Thats really what its all about man, being with nature and experiencing all that it has to offer. Really thats what most can't grasp.
Thats why nature has selection ;)
I'd bet there's more than one on here that doesn't like the dark. It's not a natural thing for us to want to be in dark spaces. Our eyes aren't good at seeing in the dark and our senses of hearing and smell are not nearly as keen as those things that would bite or sting us. So it's actually pretty natural that you would feel that way.
If there is something that gives you comfort (knife, gun, club, etc) then take it with you. Just knowing your "protection" is there might help. Also, you'll have much better night vision if you look slightly away from whatever you are trying to see rather than directly at it.
If you want to do a solo then pick a night with a full moon and no overcast. You'll have all the light you need to see but still be on your own.

If you live out in the country, open up your windows and go to sleep. You'll inevitably hear crickets, frogs, and all of the other animals at night and then the birds in the morning.
Or you can just carry Tequila and drink until you don't care or pass out... :D

I have a similar problem. I'm not afraid of the dark. All the sounds just keep me trying to figure out what they are and whats making them. My doc says it's from my "PTSD" and its called "Hyper vigilance". Here's what I've come up with that seems to help.
1. If I'm alone in the bush I just deal with it.
2. If I'm in the bush with other people I put in earplug's. If something happens they will hear it and all the commotion will wake me up. If nothing else I don't have to listen to them snore.
3. If I am at home I put an earplug in the ear closest to my wife.....so I don't have to listen to her snore.:D

Use earplugs. Get some made out of silicone or wax, not the foam thingies. They'll cut out all the cracks and creaks out there at night.
Good on you admitting to being scared, many people are; most guys I know just don't admit to it but rather pack a gun as their safety blanket.
And hey, go on that solo trip! If you go for a week or more, after a few nervous nights, sleep deprivation plus ear plugs will give you a good night's rest for sure ;)

Your timeline is way off:
It wasn't until 1821 that Mexico gains independence from Spain. California is under Mexican control, but government is loose because of the distance from Mexico City. Mexico opens the California coast to foreign trade and American vessels begin to trade with Californios.
The California Gold rush didn't even start until 1848. In 1846 The population of California consisted of about 6,900 Californios, 700 foreigners (mostly Americans) and at least 300,000 Native Americans. The Donner Party got lost 2 years before that.

the Indian people understood who and what God is. passing the plate kind of explains it
almost sort of. I dont disrespect religion, but i do say that there is something other more to it than paying your 10%. I havent yet met a preacher that can tell me how my decendants are going to survive when the sun blows up. And there are no preachers that spend thier 10% on developing a plan that works.their of little use to me and my
God, they preserve only the scripture for thoes who realy understand it.

What dates are incorrect in my post? I worded the last sentence incorrectly. The Donners Party problems happened in 1846 two years before the California gold rush started in 1848.
Religion! Remember the taboos. No posting on religion. Besides, the sun isn't going to blow up. Someone will just flip the switch and *poof* it will be dark. Of course, I'll be on Alpha Centauri drinking swill in some gin joint listening to Sam play the piano and wondering if Ilsa will be walking through the door. I'll probably be wondering if Ugarte made it but then the three eyed one eared Centaurian will sort of look like him so that will always be good for a laugh.

That sort of depends on where you are doesn't it? Some animals will be more than happy to trot right in your camp site whether you are making noise or not. Raccoons, skunks, opossum, bear, jaguar, leopard are all happy to join you from time to time.

The truth is just that some day in our distant future the star will explode just the same as any other.if i didnt mention it i would have it on my conscience.
the basis of survival has always been to get off of this rock before the sun bl&%@ *p . messiah Died by speaking for the truth of it. 100 generations from now (give or take). the Mayan calender tries to predict it. nostradamus

NO dont eat the leaf! Steep it in hot water and make a mild tea. IF you have live plants, crush the
Roots and then wring or press out the juice . Also, the normal dosage is just enough to fill half of a walnut shell at a rate of 3 doses per day.

I love the dark! And heres why. In the daytime we become too comfortable. We think since we can see all around us, we can be at ease- so we let our guards down and just entrust in our vision. Since we rely so much on sight we don't pay enough attention to our other senses- and we miss out on alot of whats going on around us. Because, we don't rely on what we hear or smell as important info. This also makes us less effective hunters/predators.
But, the night time to me is much more primal. Travel through a forest at night with no light, and you learn to rely on those other underused senses. During night time, you have to slow down as you travel and really strain your ears, and sniff to process the info. When you learn to do this, and then apply that it to your day time lifestyle you'll be amazed at what you'll find- and if your a hunter you'll be amazed at the game you'll encounter.

At nite the wilderness comes alive with action, predators growl in discontent
aware of our presence, they linger waiting for a chance to strike, the swarms of insects threaten to drive us to insanity.every snapping twig, and crunching leaf is magnified by the grey light of the slumbering moon. yea thats scary when your alone and lost in a forest dozens of miles from any other human.

Florida has scorpions. However, according to University of Florida Extension Entomologists, none of them are able to produce a fatal sting. Most folks would view these occasional invaders as a nuisance, and want to know how to control them.
In Florida, encounters with life-threatening non-native scorpions are possible only in the movies or as a result of stowaways or released exotic pets.

They like dense foliage. the first step toward controling them is to trim all of the palmetto fronds and remove any leaf litter. I use open ended soda cans to trap them in(Dig a hole deep enough for the can) place the hole in front of a Scorpion tunnel .. they fall in and cant get out of the can
