Primitive methods of dealing with insects / bugs / spiders

For me, the most hellish aspect of survival in the outdoors has always been dealing with bugs. Bugs, especially chiggers, mosquitos, ticks, and biting flies, can make your outdoor life hell. They can even disable or kill you.

So how do you guys deal with them? What are some ways you protect yourself, or treat your bites when you are out in the field for long periods of time?

I love me some deet, but eventually in a real survival situation, the deet is going to run out. What do I do then?

I want to know how to:
Treat.
Repel.
Avoid.
Protect.

I'm hoping this thread can be a repository for a variety of knowledge on how to combat those horrible little bastards.

I heard sassafras mentioned in another thread, that sounds interesting. I've also heard something about Elderberries, and Tea Tree oil. Educate me! :)

I love me some deet, but eventually in a real survival situation, the deet is going to run out. What do I do then?

The average survival situation is usually 72 hours, but if it's even a week or two, your DEET should last with proper clothing . Use netting for your sleep time and same for when you rest. If the area you're in is very infested a head net and gloves would help also. Mud and the other naturals you read about here, can help and give your body a break from the DEET, and make your supply last longer too.

Yellowroot (Goldenseal) mash the root and rub on your skin,it is said to repel insects,haven't tried it yet,but I am going to today,will let you know if it works.

Treat
There are a whole host of over the counter products that are available. If you are in an area that is prone to heavy mosquito infestation it's probably a good idea to include some of them. As you said in your post - what about when you run out. One method that I have used is very hot water. Cup of boiling water, dip cloth or bandanna in it, touch hot, moist cloth to bite area being careful not to burn yourself.

Repel
As you've stated - DEET. There are a lot of natural plant oils that will have some effectiveness. (I'm just learning plants, so I'll leave those recommendations to more knowledgable members). One member recently recommended burning pine cones in the campfire. Another member tried it on a recent outing and said that it works.

Avoid
Stay away from standin/stagnant water. Puddles, water collected in leaves on the forest floor, etc. Even a small amount can be a breeding ground for hundreds of mosquitos. Wear light colored clothing (dark colors attract them)

Protect
Long pants, long sleeves, mosquito netting, and the repellents that are so important.
