Rough Campout

My son and I camped this whole weekend. He was out of school Friday and Labor Day so I took Friday off. We were close to Old Hickory Lake and I pulled the boat too and we fished Fri and Mon mornings.

I sprayed us both down with a product, I forget the name, but it's old school DEET that I stocked up on way back when. I was pitching the tent around 1PM and leaves had fallen everywhere, LOTS of deer around. My foot slid into a small hole, when I pulled my foot out, my sock was brown with seed ticks. I threw the socks into the fire.

That night I had to take tweezers and pull 60-70 ticks outta me, 20-25 out of my son. When we got home yesterday I had at least 30 more in my back that I couldn't see, some were still in me and my wife dug them out. My son developed a fever around 2PM yesterday and it broke about 8:30PM, he went to school today.

It hit 100 for a bit each day and stayed hot at night too, miserable sleeping conditions with the itching. I did have a First Aid kit with tweezers and some itch relief thank goodness. I bet I haven't had 10 ticks crawl on me in 10 years. With all the hunting, fishing and camping we do, I can't remember the last time I had one dug in, much less THAT many.

Late Fri afternoon and thru the night we got some aftermath of the hurricanes a bit further south and saw a lightening storm and 25 mph winds. The new Columbia tent made it thru fine. I bought a $9 canteen at BPS to try out and it failed. It's all aluminum except the small chain that tethers the cap to the container. It rusted the first day and affected the taste of the water.

A lot of things went awry so I'm glad that my son got to see how it's not all fun and games and you have to be preapred for when things go wrong. It was so hot we ran out of the 5gal of water I brought very quickly, but all the rain made it easy to find good running water to boil.

We still had a blast and at least we were together!:)

First, aluminum doesn't rust to the point it gets a hole in it, but if the seams are cheap it could leak. Second, straight aluminum canteens always flavor the water unless they have been lined with something else. Yummy aluminum.

I think I would make him a doc appointment and be checked out,specially since he had the ticks on him,I don't know how long after exposure to the bite before anything serious would show up,but definately worth being checked out,wouldn't hurt you either.

Dickens - I don't remember where you are from, but the info from North Carolina regarding ticks is still applicable. Nell's right. Since he got sick following the bites, probably a good idea to have him checked out. http://www.rabies.ncdhhs.gov/epi/tick/

...Lyme Disease comes from ticks. Lessons learned? 1st, always check out the campsite carefully for any possible problems above & below, not to mention where your tent is pitched in case of heavy rain...which can lead to flash flooding. 2nd, replace $9 aluminum "piece-of-crap" canteen with 2 $8 wide-mouth Nalgene bottles...or some other name brand, like Camel-Back. Here's a tip also, when viewing any suspect holes, fill them with hotcoals rom the fire to kill any possible ticks as they can always find you later. Sounds like the DEET was pretty weak, maybe old, huh?:cool:

Ticks are little CO2 seeking missiles. Had you just tossed the sock on the ground the ticks would have left it. They home in on the CO2 in your breath to track you down. Just like mosquitoes.

Multi-use. I love it. Tyvek is warm in the winter and water proof!!!!!

We did go to the Dr yesterday afternoon. We both checked out fine and he gave us a prescrip, but told us if we had any flu like symptoms within the next 6-8 days to come back.

Oh, I have 3 nice canteens and a Camel Bak from my mtn biking days, just thought for $8.99 I'd give it a try. The aluminum canteen itself didn't rust. The little chain that tethered the cap to the canteen rusted and somehow got all in the threads where the cap screwed on. I wiped it off the best I could and took a sip and spit it out.

I set my tent where I would be safe from flooding but it was really a non-issue. We've been in a major drought and Friday night was the first rain we've seen in a long time. The ground soaked the water up like a golf course. I'm in TN and even with all the hurricanes south of us, Friday was the only rain we've seen.

The hole I stepped in couldn't have been much bigger or deeper than a small cereal bowl. It's been so dry here the leaves have fallen like a hot dead autumn.

I don't know what the deal was with the ticks Friday. I guess I hit the wrong spot at the wrong time. Spring Turkey season and bow season for deer are prime tick time, but I've seen maybe 10 ticks crawl on me in the last 10 years. The lesson I learned was to not get complacent and let my guard down.

This was a planned camping trip where I had a working vehicle and could leave anytime. I know that may not always be the case.

Thanks for the concern for my little boy. He seems fine and ripping and running. We went to Scouts last night and he was a bundle of energy. I've got a leadership training class 8:30-12 Saturday and next Saturday I'm in front of Kroger for 2 hrs selling popcorn.:D

Yep! Trailsend. I have to admit the video produced by the Scouts that we watched last night was a bit cheesy. I guess it was made on the cheap using real scouts as actors. I can overlook that, but the writing was a bit elementary even for first graders.

So I have a dilemma. Pay his $105 activity fee outta my pocket OR buy $300 worth of popcorn to cover it.LOL! I hope he sells a bunch at Kroger cause we ain't allowed to sell in my neighborhood or at my office.

I know I'll make two enemies this year. A lady I graduated high school and college with use to sell my wife a lot of popcorn and I used to buy from a guy in my hunting club. My wife's a popcorn fiend but I can't buy from them AND my son. My wife LOVES her popcorn and so does my son. We always carry some Jiffy pop camping to heat over the fire. I get calls from my wife all the time on the way home from work, especially when she was pregnant, to stop by the movie theater and pick her up popcorn. I guess we'll buy a decent portion from our son.:D If my money goes anywhere, Scouts and Little League are my choices.
