Hello all,
We are still on our journey to Alaska and we will be crossing on over within a week. I was wondering if any of you have crossed at either Blain/White Rock, HWY 539 into Aldergrove or the Sumas/Huntingdon crossing within the last year. These are our only options and was wondering if one was better than the other with regard to wait times, border guard attitude etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
P.S. all is going great (knocking on wood) eastern Washington looks like New Mexico!! We didn't expect that one! :) Truck sounds a little tired, I plan on doing an oil change, new fuel filter and put some additive in the tank to clear out the fuel system in the next couple of days. I probably need a valve lash adjustment, I just don't have the time to unpack and unhitch for 2 days to get the truck in. I've never done one myself. Hope to be fishing in 2 weeks!
Thanks Wolf Pack!

I used to cross at Blaine at least once a month, but that was quite a few years ago. This link may provide you with some info that is useful. http://apps.cbp.gov/bwt/

Never crossed at either, but can assure you that they will ask if you have any firearms, if you do you will have to register then. Not sure how big a hassle this is, espically where you are just crossing to go into the States again.
Glad to here all is well on the trip....have fun!

I have never been able to take a firearm through Canada to Alaska, I have always shipped them to a friend in AK from Montana. I think you have to get a special permit well ahead of time if your taking a gun through Canada.
I have never had trouble getting into Canada, they ask for your ID and ask you were your going, how long your planning to be in Canada, and if you have enough money to do the trip (they don't want you stuck in BC or the Yukon) then they let you through. Very easy
However, getting back into the States is always a hassle- I have been searched by the Americans almost every time lately when coming through, and I am always treated like a foreigner by my own statesmen. The Canadians have always been nice though. I once got in a bit of trouble for having a a freezer full of Caribou and moose meat not properly tagged, I ended up having the meat confiscated but, I didnt get a ticket. I think I would have rather got a ticket, and kept the meat.
The ticket would probably have been cheaper!!!
I crossed at Niagra Falls and the Canadian folks gave me a ration of good ole' Canadian 3rd degree (I only rated a 2nd degree). The American side just waved me through on the return trip. Go figure.
Jason's right, ship the guns to Alaska before you cross. Our bureaucrats invent new ways every day to apply red tape. Other than that, I've always had a friendly welcome home from Canadian border personnel and I've been strip searched twice by American border guards in the last 6 years. Back in teh 70's I used to do the Blaine crossing regularly in BC and got the smile and wave treatment both directions. Last time I was coming home there was a really cute female RCMP officer at the Canadian border station and she absolutely refused to strip search me, even for money.
Da*ned bureacrats! What's next? A no frisking policy?
Could be, Rick. She wasn't very frisky at all.....

Guns were all shipped when we were in Tacoma. I'm just printing out the Canadian laws and getting all my ducks in a row so to speak. We are bringing in 4000 or so rounds and under the limit in re-loading supplies. I will declare everything and I need to register or inventory stuff with the U.S. on our side before going up so they don't charge me tax on the way back in. What a PITA! :)

4,000 rounds, you going to fit into the Kenai Peninsula just fine.

I was thinking 4000 that's all

Which way are you guys going up through BC/Yukon? I'd recommend the Stewart-Cassiar Hwy to you instead of going via Dawson creek/Alaska Hwy, although you'll miss out on Liard River Hot Springs that way. The Stewart-Cassiar is much more beautiful, lonely, more wildlife etc. I think they paved the whole thing by now, though.

Might grab some "V"BAR Ice Chains, they are most likely cheaper in America. And you will need them sooner or later.

Thanks for all the help. We have chains and a 9500lb winch for the truck. Hopefully we won't need them. I'll look into the VBar chains though.
The Canadian Gov't in all it's wisdom only allows 5000 rounds or less and I'm going to take a hit on tax over 400 rounds. It's worth it in my opinion, it's all big caliber 30.06, 10mm, .44mag, 45ACP, 308 and 12ga steel, slugs and buck. I had to leave 30K plus rounds back in the states with family, mostly .22LR. That was darn hard to do!
Not sure which route we are taking as of yet, still doing some work on the rig and getting everything ship shape for the next 2600 miles. Doing an oil and filter change, front rotors turned and new pads, fuel filter and cleaning my K&N air filter etc.
I'm sure glad fuel prices have stayed below the $5.00 mark so far. Our budget was set for $5.50 gal just in case. I'll be able to buy up some .22LR when we get into Anchorage. :)

Good to hear that all is going as planned. Keep us updated. Have fun, be safe.

Brick of .22 LR will run $17.95 if you shop hard. generally $19.95 to $23.95. You should try to do Boondocks Sporting goods, in Eagle River, just to look at hundreds of guns, and a must is (GNG) Great Northern Guns, on 2920 Tudor Road, it is one of the finest "GUN" stores west of the Mississippi. And we got one of those Sportsman Whorehouse thingies in south Los Anchorage
