I was wondering if anyone packs caffeine pills when you are out and about? I keep a bottle in both my b.o.b. and my quick kit, which are in the car.

Not me - I will always find or have coffee.

Oh, give me coffee anyday:) I am a cranky bear without it::rolleyes: Sometime I need to be alert faster than brewing time, so I keep the pills on hand just in case. I was wondering, and forgot to ask was if there is a natural stimulant that can be found in the wild.

I'm trying to beat my addiction to it.

Early at the office this morning, ready to pour myself a cup and just took a whiff, put the coffee down and poured myself some water.

Here's some info on sources of caffeine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine While camping or hiking I always have some whole beans to place in my mouth - don't know if it's giving me much, but it makes my brain happy. But then again, I'm the guy on the forum that drinks coffee out of a bowl.

Just drink from the pot like I do...

Rick

One cup a day for me. I carry coffee bags so all I need is hot water and I'm good to go. Other than that, I don't/won't do the stimulant thing.

I've been accused of drinking a lot of coffee. Probably about 8 - 12 cups a day. I really have cut back since I retired from the Navy.

as much as i don't like to go far without having coffee on me, i also carry excedrin these days with my first aid kit. the acetamenophen helps the aches, and the caffein helps the pain of not having enough coffee. i wish somebody would make an expresso syrup with ibuprophen...

I read a story some time back that caffeine increases the effectiveness of pain relievers. I inherited migraines from my granny so the combo is a regular staple of mine. Here it is. Dated 1984:

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=health&res=9500E3DC1638F935A35757C0A962948260

and one slightly newer (2007):

Yup Rick, there are some pain relievers out there with caffiene in them,I was given an Rx for one once,I can't remember if it was Tylenol 3 or what but it was good stuff.

If I remember correctly Tylenol 3 is OTC in Canada, but because of the codeine in it is a prescription only in the US.

with codeine it's prescription here too, Crash.

Coffee is...well I don't want to put too fine a point on it, but oftentimes..yeah it's my reason for living. I take my coffee pretty seriously and very often. If I was out in the bush without supplies, coffee is what I'd miss the most.

Maybe I'm thinking of something else. When I was first stationed in the Seattle area we use to go skiing in BC quite often. There was a caution not to buy OTC Tylenol. Is there/was there Tylenol 222?

I'm not sure that I would have any motivation to get out of bed if it weren't for coffee. It's one of the items on my "If survival means doing without this, then to hell with surviving" list.

Something to consider re: the effects of caffeine.
Caffeine is a diuretic - that means, it takes more water to pass it out of your system than you take in from the source of the caffeine. So, if water is an issue in your situation, caffeine is probably not the best thing for you.

I remember something they referred to as 222's but didn't realize it was Tylenol. But T3's with codeine are definitely a prescription. I went through a lot of those the year I got my ankle crushed.

I'll likely start some talk on this, but there's also ephedra/ephedrine. AKA Mormon Tea (I think.)

Note that it is also synergistic with aspirin AND caffeine, meaning if you take this with the two aforementioned substances ALL THREE produce stronger results than any one would have alone. (Did I say that right?)

I took it quite a bit in college in pill form, and it works very well. It stimulates the metabolism and boosts energy more than caffeine in my opinion, so it helps if you're trying to lose pounds. I took mine with an aspirin and 2 cups of expresso in the morning, and the same again before workouts. I worked out a lot then.

When I quit I had absolutely zero identifiable withdrawal symptoms. Just wasn't as bouncy as before. Now I quit coffee too, just lost my desire for it. No withdrawal there either.

Rick

I'm glad it worked for you. I sort of weigh sudden cardiac death (ephedra) on one hand and a satisfying, refreshing, hot cup of coffee on the other. For some reason, coffee always wins.

Isn't that stuff banned in Indiana now Rick? Too many kids dying (literally)to get their hands on the stuff.
I took the stuff once when I was on third shift and taking my mom to treatments during the day (cancer) some weeks I got very little sleep, not a good thing when you drive a fork truck,so I bought some and tried it,spent the next 4-5 hours finding things to do that didn't require me to drive the lift the jitters were that bad.

Oops! I did forget to mention some of the negative aspects of ephedra. I'm glad you guys did! I heard word of mouth it's bad for the liver too, as are most OTC pain meds like Aspirin and Tylenol.
I also neglected to mention that a tolerance builds to it, quickly in my case.
It also worked (for me) better than any OTC allergy remedy.

Rick
08-27-2008, 07:51 AM
It's banned nationwide as a dietary supplement. I think you can still buy it though.

Down here, everything has to be ephedra free, they are not supposed to sell it anymore.

There is a pill in Canada that you can get without prescription that has codine in it, you get it over the counter, but it is very low dose. Codine puts me to sleep, and I used these when I could not sleep because of the pain in my hip and back, worked great.

I don't know what it is about coffee, but I drink it all day long. It doesn't have to even be good. I have the timer set on mine to start before I get up and finish dripping about the time I make it to the kitchen. I drink about a pot and a half BEFORE I leave for work. At least two pots at the office. Even when it gets that old roofing tar look at 3-4PM, I'll load a cup up for the commute home. When I get home I nuke the half pot left over from the morning.

I used to drink colas but quit for many reasons, but when I did, I could down a 2 liter or drink a pot of coffee and lay down and go to sleep. Drink half a glass of tea at lunch and lay awake all night. If I did fall asleep, I'd wake up having to pee. Don't know why, just not a tea drinker.

Funny, nasty story: Used to be a member of a mtn bike club and we camped and raced at LBL(Land Between the Lakes) at a big 50 mile race. We had some cool guys on our team and loved to camp. My wife had just give me a new tent as a gift. A tree fell on my previous tent during a storm, I wasn't in it. My wife decides to come on this trip too. LESSON TO BE LEARNED, test your equipment BEFORE heading out. Open the tent for the first time and they accidentally sold her the model that hangs from the ceiling. A tarp and some creativity and we stayed dry during that night's storm.

My wife gets up to use the restroom way too much, she takes medicine now for it. I have a race at 5AM, she wakes me up every 30 min cause she's afraid to go in the woods. We had some of those blue and red solo cups and I told her to pee in a cup, just don't wake me up again. Next morning I'm cooking my eggs on the trusty coleman and, OH no, I forgot my coffee. A guy from another team comes stumbling thru and asked if anyone wanted the last of his coffee. YES! Let me go get a cup. It's dark and I reach in and grab a cup and sling its contents and enjoy his coffee. My wife wakes up and stumbles to me and asks where I got the cup. I couldn't figure out what she was driving at and told her we had a whole pack just grab another. She then reminded me that I told her not to wake me up and go in a cup. What did I do with its contents. I spewed. I'm a germaphobe clean freak and hardly drink after my wife, yet I just drank.... Oddly enough, 9 months and 15 minutes after that camp out, we had a son. So it wasn't all bad.

I don't know why but people gross me out. I don't like people talking while I eat or breathing on my food. OTOH, I'll whip out a knife and clean a fish and put a new dip in during the middle. I tell my wife nature is clean, people are nasty.:D

Actually it was my wife that got pregnant. I can't go into it in a family friendly forum, but if you PM me offline, I'll explain how it all works.:D

Ephedrin has been banned in NY, and in many other states because people would buy cold medicine by the case to make methamphetamine...so now you cant get over the counter medications that actually work.

Sure you can,if it's like in Indiana, all the medication that contains Ephedrin is now behind the pharmacy counter,to purchase it you have to ask, then fill out their log book with your name address birthdate, social security number and so on.
You are limited in the amout you may purchase in a certain amount of time, and the state police goes around and makes copies of the log books to comppare to other pharmacy log books to make sure you are not buying it at more than one location.

Heres an atricle from a NY paper where someone was arrested for buying too much

Catfish

I often wonder what causes proctologists to go into that profession. I mean, if you're smart enough to be a proctologist, then you're smart enough not to be one, right? You could do all kinds of things, so why choose to be a proctologist.

"How was your day at work darling?"
"Oh terrific thanks, the best in ages, no patients at all."

I have a theory that on graduation day at doctor school, they read out the exam results from the highest to the lowest. There's a sign up sheet on the wall and the person with the best marks gets first choice of what kind of doctor they want to be. Next highest chooses second and so on until they get to the guy who graduated last in the class (but still graduated) and he has to be a proctologist.

Well, do you have a better explanation?

crashdive123
08-29-2008, 04:53 PM
Proctologist is sitting at his desk writing out a prescription. A nurse walks into his office and says "Doctor....why are you writing with a thermometer?" Doctor looks down and says "Darn! Some azz***e has my pen!"

When I was in the Navy, as you approached your 40th birthday you got scheduled for a proctology exam. I had an appointment toward the end of the week, while a friend of mine had an appointment earlier in the week. He told me that the doc that came into the room scared the he!! out of him. He was big - about 6'7". He grabbed an exam glove and started to put it on - the glove shredded - he said the docs hands were huge. When the doc stopped laughing he said - it's a little joke I play with a pair of extra small gloves.....I'll get your doc now. He wasn't around for my exam.
