Made my first Bug Out Bag

This has been a hot topic on here a couple of times as to what one would need, do you really need a BOB, and so I put one together as I decided ya never know what will happen and if Murphy's Law hits your in deep dooky if'n ya ain't got somethings ya might need. So this past weekend I made my first Bug Out Bag here are my contents. The suggested contents of a BOB vary, this is kept in the back of my SUV in an old large A.L.I.C.E. Pak or Ruckscak.

Enough food and water to last for seventy two hours. This includes:
4 litres (1 gallon) of water per person per day, for washing, drinking and cooking.
spoil-free food. Can foods duh.
water purification supplies.
cooking supplies.
cutlery and cups/dishes.
A first aid kit.
A disaster plan including location of emergency centers, rallying points, possible evacuation routes etc.
Professional emergency literature explaining what to do in various types of disaster, studied and understood before the actual disaster but kept for reference. (Mainly for the wife as she wants these.
Maps
Standard camping equipment, including sanitation supplies.
Clothes and bedding. (Tent and such)
Enough medicine to last an extended evacuation period if, for example, one's home were destroyed.
Radio.
Lighting: battery operated flashlight(2), 6 Chemlites or glow sticks.
Crowbar.
Cash, as electronic banking transactions may not be available during the initial period following an emergency or evacuation.
My primitive survival gear gets chucked in as well if I need to Bug Out, never really thought of having one just thought it might be nice to have in the event something ever happened.

Hey Beo. The crowbar is a great idea, especially for moving heavy objects if a tornado comes through. You know like moving debris out of the road, or opening smashed/bent doors? It's too heavy for backpacking, but a great idea.

Do you think $500 cash would cover things for a few days? I mean, if the power is out all over, even restaurants are not going to be open, especially if restaurant employees are at home protecting their families.

Here in west Michigan we don't have a lot of disasters. Flooding (impassable roads) is generally cleared up in 4 hours or so. Power that goes out is usually restored to the majority in 24 hours. Hardly any confirmed tornadoes, though the east side of MI gets them. Last time my power went out was for 12 hrs in summer 2006. It was just a transformer on a pole got so hot from all the A/C running, it started on fire. Only our street was affected.

Here is what Trooper has in his Survival Kit in his closet in his room. Not bad for 16 year old kid.
Shelter or warmth

Reflective aluminum space blanket to retain body heat
Lightweight emergency poncho for protection against rain
Emergency "tube tent"
Mosquito net, for protection against mosquitoes, flies and other insects.
Magnifying glass & flint & steel, Magnesium Flint and Saw Striker and Waterproof matches & bic lighter.
Polarized Sunglasses
Wide Brimmed Hat
Cable saw for cutting wood
Health and First Aid items:

First aid kit with bandages, sterile pads and gauze, first aid tape, tweezers, surgical razor, disinfectant pads, oxytetracycline tablets (for diarrhea or infection) and aspirin. Also keep an extra pair of prescription eyeglasses or contacts. Any material in the kit that may be damaged or rendered ineffective by water should be wrapped or sealed in plastic.
Insect repellent
Soap
Toilet paper
Hydrogen peroxide
Epinephrine
Rubbing alcohol
Lip balm
Sun Screen (30 SPF or more is recommended)
Food and water

2-2 quart canteens and tin cup
Iodine tablets for emergency water purification
Edible salt for food also can be used for brushing teeth.
5 Ready-to-eat meals (MRE), emergency food bars. Fishing line, fish hooks, lures, and split shot leads
Snare wire
Tea, gum, and hard candy (as a morale booster)
Signaling, navigation and reference

Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) brite Strobe light he's had for a while
4 Candles & 6 Chemlite glow sticks
Surveyor's orange tape (for marking location for rescuers)
Pen and paper
Whistle & Signal Mirror
Compass
Maps of our region
Ranger Handbook & Army Survival manual
Multipurpose tools or materials

Swiss army style knife
Leatherman style multi tool
Army Mess Kit
Sharpening stone
Folding saw
Heavy-duty thread and needle (for repairing clothing and equipment)
5 Plastic bags
Heavy-duty aluminum foil (for frying food, signaling, etc.)
50feet of "550" parachute cord

All in all not to shabby for a 16 year old who just got into survival, and he did this on his own and showed me what he came up with. Kinda proud of the young man.

Nice job Beo. In your money stash you may want to add a couple of rolls of quarters. If power is on in areas, vending machines or pay phones (do they still have those) might be a welcome treat.

One additional thought for BOB's
I rarely see mention of records - ID, Bank info, passports, insurance, birth cert's, social sec. cards, etc. Also, contact info for family & friends through out the country.

I keep photocopies of all my importing doc's ready to go. More along the lines of disaster recovery than disaster survival - but wicked important if TSHTF.
