Just kidding. Just kidding. Many have asked what the best survival weapon is. I may not want to lug one of these around in a backpacking journey, but it sure would be on my list of Man, I gotta get one of those. I mean, who wouldn't want a fully automatic 12 gauge shotgun with exploding rounds?

Shotguns are overkill for zombies. All you need to do is damage the brain and they go down. A heavy shotgun with large shells is too much to lug around efficiently. An accurate pistol with much smaller and lighter rounds will do the trick much better.

When the zombies rise, I will be ready.

am quite content with my old remington 870 has never jammed or let me down and it is quite versatile and with the right load will put anything in front of me down of course she is a shortrange unit but out to 50 yds. is pretty hard to miss . you can have your auto with or without exploding rounds we each drop ours in the mud and see who can still stop that critter lol

The Mossy and 4 boxes of 00 buck cost me under $250.

For home defense this is what I want. TDW wants one in 20 gage.

If it's right for you......I just think a long gun has it's limitations getting through doorways and hallways. A lupara, on the other hand, gives you the same stopping power and none of the problems fitting through the door.

As for pistols vs. shotgun for the zombies. When I run out of shells I still have a club. What will you have? Hmmmmmm?

I find practice in dark alleys works best. Hard to find volunteers in the light of day. There is that feeling of perfection when the bat meets skull and you hear that muffled thud. When you hit the sweet spot on the bat you can feel it in your hands. Yeah, Wowie works.

I kinda like my Winchester Defender with the 18" barrel, heat shield and full mag capacity. Haven't seen one like it before, all factory and I like a stock not a pistol grip. I'm not saying it has a kick but pump & pull as fast as you can and you will automatically shoot in a circle.

Talking to my good Kiwi friend a few days ago on the benefits of various.

Street fighter, rugby player, the size of a tree trunk. I showed him my arsenal, he selected a two metre 1 1/4 inch thick bamboo rod & went to his car to get his hacksaw. He reduced the rod to 27 inches.

This weapon is all you need unless you insist on firearms. Light, short, easy to wield in close. Breaks bone, paralyze a nerve, break more bones. If necessary. Lighter than a sword, poleaxe, spear, baseball bat.

I won a Winchester Mod. 6 pump I believe on a tip board. Held 6, no plug. Gave it away and traded an 870 + $100 for the Winchester I have now. Got an old Winchester Mod. 97 that will slamfire but its age keeps me from using it now even with skeet loads. When my son visits he usually helps himself to something but when I visit him his safe is always locked. Gonna have to have a talk with that boy. He is eying a Remington Browning, time for a combo change.

Have 2 Rem 870's and for all-around use- you can't beat 'em. Fire nearly any round, go the He** and back for ya and they field strip in seconds. I have a Benelli SBE which is the finest mechanical auto-loader I've ever seen, and a couple fancy stack guns (Over/Under) but pressed to it- I'll reach into the safe for the 870 every single time. Tried and True.

Got an old Winchester Mod. 97 that will slamfire but its age keeps me from using it now even with skeet loads.

OWVC,
OK, while I appreciate your concern for it's age, the Model 97 and it's replacement, the Model 12 Winchester, are DESIGNED to fire every time you put a shell in the chamber with the trigger held back. It's NOT a slamfire, which is uncontrolled. As soon as you let go of the trigger and chamber the next round, YOU WILL HAVE TO PULL THE TRIGGER FOR IT TO GO BANG. If not, take that sucker into your closest gunsmith and have it fixed.

The reason is, there is no 'disconnector' on either of these shotguns. I've owned both. I settled on the Model 12.

I can put six rounds down range in less than three seconds (one in the pipe and five in the mag). THIS IS THE BEST SHOTGUN. PERIOD.

Unlike semiauto shotguns, which require gas from the last fired round (and can get clogged at the worst possible moment), this is strictly a pump shotgun.

Plus, my Model 12 has ONE additional feature. It's a 'take-down' model. Which means it is designed to disassemble at the receiver. As mine is a 19" barrel length, the overall package broken down, is just under 24". Plus that ability to throw lead downrange at blinding speeds, makes the Model 12 THE SHOTGUN you should have in your MNZB armory.

Now the price. I NEVER pay more than $400 for any take-down Model 12 that I own. NEVER. You just have to be patient and persistent. They are out there, depending on shape. I like to purchase the less expensive ones. They are generally 'beater' shotguns whose finish is basically nonexistant.

Then I grit blast (large grit) and blue it. No sanding or polishing. It comes out ALMOST like it's been parkerized. Which I've also done. But I found it's no more durable than my grit blast and blue.

As I had said in my introductions, I recently purchased a Mossberg 500. I haven't done any upgrades/mods except for taking out the little 'chopstick' piece of wood so I can load an extra 3 rounds in the chamber.

I did a ridiculous amount of research into which shotgun I should purchase, and after stumbling across this incredible link that I describe below, I chose the Mossberg 500:

READ THIS ARTICLE. IT BRINGS UP SOME INTERESTING POINTS.

I found this article comparing a Remington 870 and a Mossberg 500. Being new to shotguns, this article brought a lot into perspective for me as a new gun owner, despite the authors obvious slant towards the Mossberg:

http://members.tripod.com/~jth8260/870.html (http://members.tripod.com/~jth8260/870.html)

I agreewith marcraft, I'd say the Benelli M4 is the really amazing. I'd say the best, but I don't have enough facts. I mean if you watch the benelli video with Tom Knap shooting stuff, and then you watch how they're made, you really really REALLY want to get one. As for Zombies, I'd want some kind of fully automatic 20 guage pistol.....yeah that'd work. With a 20 guage the recoil won't be as bad as others. I'd have two of those on my hips and then a big ol' punt gun mounted on my huge Humvee.

Back in the 80's I carried a made for the military 870 w/bayonet lug and bayonet. I never mounted it but it was there if I needed it. During that time I ran with a bunch of big dogs that carried AR's. Not one of them thought my 870 was the least bit funny. I carried that 870 with a 100 rd. assortment of buckshot and slugs as well as a 1911 with 8 extra mags for 3 years. That was back when I was younger, stronger, faster and thought I was bullet proof. Thank God my age, strength and speed allowed me to lived long enough to realize I wasn't bullet proof.:D

Professionally I've used a number of slide action shotguns over the years. About five years ago we changed from Mossburgs to Remington 870s, and I miss the Mossburgs because they had night sights, a tang safety, and extra rounds in the stock (I know the sights and butt-stock are not original equipment, but I still miss them).

Overall, I think my favorite slide action shotgun is the Ithaca Featherlight. As well as having used it on the job, I have one at home for hunting. It is fairly light weight (as the name indicates) and has a very smooth action. To me, it seems to be a step above other slide actions.

"DITTO"........I also like the bottom ejection of the Ithaca Model 37. When I carry it with my left hand under the reciever, it covers the primary entry opening for grass seeds, leaves, sticks, and other junk that can gum up the system. But all three are good tools.

Nuff said.

Just went and put one of these critters on lay-away. Should have it paid off
in a couple of weeks.
