I've got the urge to grab my BOB and have somebody drive me out in the middle of nowhere blindfolded (me blindfolded, not the driver) and let me find my way back to the house or to "Point X". The only problem is that i've got a JOB to go to, a business to run, etc etc...
Does anybody else have this urge? what do you people do?

I actually get lost more in the city than in the wilderness.
Try it with both of you blindfolded! Hey fun's fun....:D
I'm with you bulrush, the only place I lose my sense of direction is in highrises surrounded by other highrises.

And when you want to come home...... Just click your heels together 3x's and say There's no place like home :rolleyes:
I might be more fun if JUST the driver were blind folded. Then YOU can see what's going on. And.....no seat belt. Now that's survival! They tell me just before the car slams into a solid object you instinctively brace yourself by pushing with your feet. That causes your shins to snap on impact. So you'd get practice setting broken bones. Win/win!

Well hey, we all had a lot of fun with it. I understand the urge to get out there where the buses don't run and there's no powerlines overhead. That's what most of us are here for. :D

Sorry, no urge to be blindfolded. Tied up maybe, but not blindfolded. As far as being out in the middle of nowhere....sure, often get the urge. When I do, I go (but again, no blindfold).
I only blindfold myself when I get the urge in the woods. Some things you just don't want to see.

on a serious note , i get the urge all the time to test myself and my capabilities, but in what i call realistic scenarios but my idea and others differ on that definition, if you are going to do that follow the rules of survival if some one drives you out there obviously they know where you are at so make sure a timeline is established, but i don't see anything wrong with testing your skills

I test myself by practicing evasion when the grass needs cut, garbage taken out or something serious like skipping dessert. I think I "practiced" myself enough and am saving everything for an "emergency" situation. I think I calculated 1 1/2 emergencies, all I have now.

Where is the middle of nowhere? Is it really nowhere if you can be driven there? That doesn't sound too challenging to be just left on the side of the road somewhere- especially in the lower 48.

Do a para jump into the middle of wilderness, your kit goes on a cord and hangs below you, if the fall don't mess ya up then try and make it home.
Here in Ohio we have sky diving places and for enough $ those guys will drop you wherever you want.
Take a helo into the wilds, and get dropped off. I mean if you reeeeeally want to test yourself.
Me no thanks I can handle myself but never just go anywhere without knowing what the terrain is or letting someone know, unless you kidnap me but then we gotta fight about that :D so I'm with the others as to never really being lost or losing my sense of direction in the forests, now where Pict is my be another story but then I'd fall back on my training and skills. Who knows.
Or skydive over northern Montana and let JasonMontana find you:D

Off the side of a road? Just look which way the tire tracks came from- then slowly walk out. Heck, he even wants to have his kit with him. There is no road around in the lower US that you won't get back to some place in a few days of walking. IF its the desert sleep all day and walk all night. When you get to an intersection- take the road that is the most used- in a day or two you'll end up somewhere.
Now, being dropped off in the middle of a Wilderness area- is a different story, but still not an imposing task.

wait a second will he have a map? i can take you out here to the watershed area leave you on the side of the road and when you get to a four way intersection then you turn left you just pooched yourself if you follow that you will walk for days deeper into the boreal forest, following tire tracks assume that there are no other tracks on the road and it is extremely diffucult to follow tracks on a gravel road. there is one way to do this experiment, if ya want to know ask me i will share my profound wisdom. (big smile)

Remember I am talking lower 48....not Northern Ontario. Anywhere in Northern Canada is an entirely different game- and I defiently agree that you could get hosed. But in the continuous USA....being left on the side of the road, to me is not a survival situation.

ok hmm lets see you are an outdoors person, skilled at navigating i assume being a musher or maybe just very familiar with your territory but what is your friends skill?
anyways what i was refering to before was natural navigation that is the key to getting where you need to go with the lack of map and compass or even in addition to

Can you explain that further, WE? Do you mean by that navigating by vegetation patterns and small features of a landscape (rock outcrops, bogs, creeks etc)? We do that here when bushwhacking and it works great for getting a general sense of where we are / going, but I don't know if there is an actual method to it.

Not so much. I know most of Michigan and there is nowhere with in 30 miles of my house that within 10 or 20 minutes after taking the blind fold off that I would not know where I am. Drop me by copter into the national forest in the UP, diferent story but I would find my way out. head in one direction in this state and at some point you will hit shore line. you are never more than 80 miles of a great lake in this state. 80 miles is a long way BUT not obtainable.

usuing that logic just head south day or night using only natural navigation you are bound to run into a road sooner or later.

Walking across the country and walking to one side of Michigan are kind of, well not kind of, different... I know what state I am in and know things about that state. So what other logic is there?

I know i didn't quite clarify this in my original post, but i think you guys are kinda missing the point.
There are several reasons for "The Urge". One is Land Nav (not necessarily ROAD Nav). Another is testing survival skills, and another is testing the survival kit itself. Maybe throw a mission in there... Maybe the mission is to avoid human contact. you know... arrive undetected. travel by night, limit movement during the day. etc etc etc.
Throw something in the mix. make it interesting.

Brother, that is why I backpack. About once a month, either I call up my crew or I get an email from one of them that goes something like this: "We gotta get back out there. Everyone start kissing up to the wife so that she'll be cool with you running away for a 2-night/2-day hike. Here's a trail I've found. . . . . " I don't have a BOB (I'm not sure I even like the concept, really), but in my pack is everything I need to survive for 72 hours including shelter, food, water treatment, and tools. We go into the mountain, up through the wild places, and inhale lonesome air. When we come back down again, we are filthy and exhausted, and good for about a month until one of us gets the itch again.

i had an urge last night the mission was trying to navigate my wife into a certain room but i was detected so then i travelled by night trying to avoid human contact so i fulfill my urge.

Depends on the road.
Permian Basin - south of the Guadalupe mountains - SE New Mexico / SW TX. You can walk for miles without seeing a tree or any scrub more than waist high. 110+ during the summer. So, you're driving down the road & the car dies for whatever reason. no cell phone contact out there, either. So you decide to walk, because, hey, the side of a road is not a "survival situation."
Getting thirsty yet? hmmm, maybe you can catch one of those buzzards that seem to be circling closer...
Many place in the dessert SW become survival situations VERY quickly. But perhaps you didn't intend for those to be included as part of the "Lower 48?" :D

Sorry Pal, as someone who has spent time working in the Permian Basin, I disagree. There are almost half a million people that live in that area. There are people running around everywhere on the roads there checking on all the oil rigs, and cows.
There are places in the desert southwest that I think may almost be a roadside survival situation- but that area isn't one of them.

Great. When I was there about a month ago, it was desolate. Maybe you were in the TX part of the basin. NM is less populated. So as not to get into a p!ssing contest, The simple fact is, it is a dry, hot, scarcely populated area, slightly larger than the state of Georgia. Water, heat, and sun exposure are immediate and pressing issues.
Maybe you are the kind of guy that runs up K2 naked for fun, and the desert SW is just a big playground. I'm just a mere mortal and recognize my limits. I don't fear that area, but I respect it for what it is - 75,000 sq. miles of desert.

Dennis, my background has taught me to look around and observe everything before a situation develops. My background has taught me to stay calm and rational, and think through situations and to process the information that I am taking in from my senses, and to make decisions based on that. My background has taught me- to not fall victim to the preconceived notions that others impose on me. But, to try and look at things in a way that I can thrive- not just survive.
Obviously it is desert. However, it is occupied desert- even in New Mexico. There are lots of roads- travel at night, stick to the roads and back track. If you really look around there are stock tanks and irrigation projects throughout the area. It is defiently desolate country, but the hands of man have made it much less hostile.
Scarcely populated? I just didn't see it. There are fences just about everywhere. Its almost all private property- the owners of it are around somewhere. Stick to the road, walk at night, drink from the stock tanks you'd be be back to people in no more than two nights. Sorry, but as I said before, there are over half a million people that live in that area- if you stay calm and rational it won't be too long until you'd find one of them.
I think traveling throughout that area in the 1800's would have been very, very tough- though.
I do agree- if your vehicle died in that country and you took off walking across the desert in the middle of the afternoon during the summer- it would be a survival situation. But, then you wouldn't be a "wilderness survivalist" you'd be a fool.
